Katymac · 17/04/2010 23:02

My files = 14670 MB of which 9362mb is my docs

Is that big?

OP posts:
ellasmum1 · 17/04/2010 23:09

it hasn't got that much space to start with- my little netbook has 150gb shared between c and d drive. just the very basics on my netbook are taking up 18GB on c drive ,you only have 50 GB total.

ellasmum1 · 17/04/2010 23:11

does it look like alot compared to whats in other folders. what is in my documents, is there a load of email on the laptop?

ellasmum1 · 17/04/2010 23:20

click on tab at top to change it all into GB instead of mb- i find that easier

Katymac · 17/04/2010 23:37

deleting all emails

Katymac · 17/04/2010 23:55

Now it won't open at all

Computers

OP posts:
Katymac · 18/04/2010 09:52

I've got it open (eventually)

& now it is hanging at 10% on the defrag - I am going to walk away & leave it

OP posts:
Katymac · 18/04/2010 10:10

It finished analysing the defrag & said it didn't need it

So I defragged anyway (now that is taking ages)

What is stored on d drive?

Its not an Acer laptop is it?

Katymac · 18/04/2010 11:06

Yep Acer

bubbles4 · 18/04/2010 11:15

Its just every pc or laptop I have had uses d drive as a recovery partition but Acer and Sony use it as another hard drive. You could move your My documents folder from c drive to d drive, that would free up some room on c drive.

Can you get hold of a copy of Windows 7? I have literally just updated my laptop (yesterday!) to windows 7, it was an empty slate of a laptop with nothing on it and was still slow, but as soon as it had finished updating to Windows 7 it was running considerably faster even with the same amount of crap stuff on it!

Katymac · 18/04/2010 11:17

There are no documents on there any more (or photos or music)

Something is wrong

OP posts:
Katymac · 18/04/2010 11:18

How much is 7? I don't want to spend money on it - if it is never going to work

bubbles4 · 18/04/2010 11:22

Some good tips here

PorphyrophillicPixie · 18/04/2010 11:23

I don't know I'm afraid, my uncle had a master copy of it and gave it to my Mum to put on all of our computers, sorry!

My laptop's a rubbish make (Belinea or something?!) and it worked fine on that so if you can get a free copy it might be worth trying.

You can try this to see which programs are using up the most memory and processing power:

  • Open the Windows Task Manager (by doing Ctrl-Alt-Del)
  • Click on the Processes tab - this shows you a list of all the programs running, including all the hidden ones
  • Click on the CPU column to sort programs in order of how much processor capacity they are using. Anything that's taking up more than about 02 is a potential culprit! (You can ignore System Idle Process)
  • Click on the Mem Usage column to sort by memory usage. The most memory hungry programs tend to be MS Word, Outlook, Internet Explorer, that sort of thing.

My Win XP laptop is about 2 years old now and though it has plenty of processing power and free memory, I habitually have to close a whole bunch of unused but running processes to keep the show on the road.

Katymac · 18/04/2010 13:59

Well it was

C:
Used 38.8 GB
Free 14.3 GB
D:
Used 15.4 GB
Free 38.2 GB

Now it's
C:
Used 33.6 GB
Free 19.4 GB
D:
Used 15.4 GB
Free 38.2 GB

There is nothing in processes more than 02 except (as you said) system idle

theboobmeister · 18/04/2010 14:21

How about memory - what processes are using the most memory?

Katymac · 18/04/2010 14:25

Teatimer.exe 113504 K
System 88500 K
Explorer.exe 35836 K
svchost.exe 34228K

These are quite small?

Mine will defrag though, even when it only had 8% space to fiddle with.

There was another thread a week or so back that I marked with more tips to speed up/get rid of stuff..I haven't had chance to work through that one yet either, I'll go and dig it out Katymac. Maybe between the two threads we can josh things along a bit. Mine feels like I'm on dialup and is driving me mad. Took 10 hours to complete AVG scan yesterday.
