Ideas for letting my toddler choose a first Pokémon

I grew up with Pokémon and although I'm not one to do trends and some people may think it's childish, but I always wanted to the one where your baby/toddler picks out their first Pokémon.

My son is 15 months old and I tried putting him in front of some Pokémon plushies to see which one to was drawn to. This is what other people I know did with their children when they were about his age. Unfortunately, he didn't want to stand still and look and would walk off.

Whenever it's on, he smiles at all of them.

I thought maybe having him pick a catalogue and see about him picking a Pokémon from that catalogue.

Catalogues I thought of:

• Original starter Pokémon - Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirrel
• Eeveelutions
• Legendary
• Type - Fire, water, grass etc
• Go by his personality

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Make sure it is age appropriate most are 3 years +

They're cuddly toys?
How can that be 3+ ?
(at least I assume the OP is meaning a cuddly toy because that's usually how picking your first Pokémon goes)

You could read (ie show him pictures) one of the Pokémon encyclopaedia books and the first one he repeats the name of becomes his Pokémon.

DH says don't forget Pikachu!

It is a cute thing to do.

You could just choose a type based on their birth eg if they are a Leo then a fire type? Or choose the basic starter Pokemon as my 9yo loves Lucario and it’s so hard to find anything so maybe make your life easier :)

He doesn't talk much at he moment, but we have a Pokémon book, which we go through. He likes slapping the pages of each Pokémon as he smiles, so it's difficult to know which one he prefers 😅 but I like the idea of him saying the name of his first Pokémon

(try not to be disappointed though if it turns out he is more interested in Thomas the Bloody Tank Engine or farm animals or....shudder... football 😂😂)

If you have cards get a selection of various characters and get him to pick a card !
Don't use a rare/expensive card though as you might not get it given back.

Oh I know! You should put them behind little lift up flaps, or in a box and the one he picks first is the Pokémon? I choose you!

They are because of safety due to eyes and parts coming off and a choking hazard.

Surely that's the case for any soft toy then 🤷

I’d get some of the books, the story books, and ‘read’ them as stories. You will have to retell them in a much more simple way but it’s a way of introducing the Pokemon.

My child has actually made a game in Scratch that would be PERFECT for this! He's put hundreds of pictures of pokemon and they come up in pairs on a screen. You tap the one you like best out of the two and it keeps that one up and shows you a new comparator.

As long as it's not the freaky Mr Mime one you can't go too wrong...

My son had a 'build a bear' Charmander. (He chose it himself - but he was at primary school and into pokemon cards then).....it had a name and clothes and came everywhere. We had a smaller Charmander called 'name junior' and a smaller one again called 'name junior junior'. - this is very outing for those that know me - but when we got married he had a tux on and my daughter's favourite teddy had a dress like her bridesmaid dress and they had seats in the church.

I've always found with toys their favourites are not what you expect or what you would like......so if you want him to love Pokemon he will probably want a Jellycat, or not want a soft toy at all and carry around a toy car or a stone....or nothing at all.
