google for an ad blocker and get rid of them

yetihed · 14/05/2008 20:44

Or you can stop using internet explorer which is prone to it. You can download mozilla firefox which does exactly the same thing but rarely has adds. Type it into google and the link will appear. I did this a few years ago and haven't had a problem since. Bliss!

MamaG · 14/05/2008 20:49

I am using firefox! Bugger. I didn't wnat to download anything as its a pain, my computer is so old it takes an absolute age

Oh pants, sorry! You might have a virus then? That's not the best news...

EvelynsDad · 14/05/2008 21:26

Have you got Adblock Plus installed? It's a Firefox add on and I don't think it's a big download. It needs a bit of tweaking to get it right, but it's worth the (small) effort.

Once you've done that FlashBlock is the next add on you need. It will also save a vast amount of bandwidth and processing power.

MamaG · 16/05/2008 13:39

Its the ads on MN that I'm talking about, not pop up ads (I don't get them -touch wood!)

To get rid of MumsNet ads and many others, install Adblock plus (see above), then restart Firefox. You will see that it says "Adblock" in the bottom right corner. Click on that and in the box labelled "New filter" enter "http://*.doubleclick.net/".

Job done.

MamaG · 16/05/2008 14:39

ED I've done that, thank you, but can't see the Adblock thing in the bottom right hand corner

Adblock really does work. I know mn towers don't like us blocking but my dial up speed is only about 16 Kbps and takes forever. I can't watch youtube or any other video clips

EvelynsDad · 16/05/2008 20:50

Don't mind me.

The instructions I gave applied to the original Adblock, not Adblock Plus.

yetihed · 17/05/2008 12:35

OMG! That adblocker is geeeeeeenius! I'm telling everyone I know! Thanks, Evelynsdad

NappiesGalore · 18/05/2008 17:09

evelyns dad, i think i quite fancy you right now... thanks for those links! (dp prob gonna kill me now if they interfere with his website... off to check)

NappiesGalore · 18/05/2008 17:11

uh oh [understatement]
can anyone else see yoyogames . com?

smugmumofboys · 18/05/2008 17:11

I just posted on the other thread on this very subject. I have just adblocked doubleclick and my computer has speeded up no end. Do try it.

NappiesGalore · 18/05/2008 17:13

smugmum, can you tell me if you can load yoyogames.com for me please?

smugmumofboys · 18/05/2008 17:17

Apparently not!

What is it? Solid ads?

NappiesGalore · 18/05/2008 17:22

lol
its lots of flashing things and stuff. and some ads too. its a sort of youtbue but for games that people write themselves with a clever piece of software which means you dont have to know code to write games. iyswim.

it might be the site itself, its had a few probs with moving to new servers apparently... [oh bugger]

EvelynsDad · 18/05/2008 18:59

It's a site problem. It's not the ad blocker.

For the technical people out there, no response on port 80.

BumperliciousNeedsToSleep · 18/05/2008 19:02

Thanks for the tips guys, sorry for blocking MNHQ but DH has fart-arsed around with the broadband and now it's really slow. The ad blocker really works! Dead easy too!

NotABanana · 18/05/2008 19:05

It is doing something different today. I click on what I want. It says done at the bottom of the screen but the screen is blank. I have to press F5 to refresh and then it counts up and finally shows what I want.

Greyriverside · 18/05/2008 20:31

you can also add
127.0.0.1 ad.uk.doubleclick.net
to your hosts file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Greyriverside · 18/05/2008 20:34

Maybe those of us with faster connections should make a point of clicking on the adverts

PinkChick · 18/05/2008 20:40

i was wondering why it takes so long to load pages these days..not happy
