I need a laptop that will mainly be used for the dc to play games on aswell as me the odd bit of typing etc. The dc say it needs t be able to play rust.... apparantly it needs a good CPU whatever that means? What should I be looking for? The last laptop we had they couldn’t play rust on it so don’t want to make that mistake again... quite limited with funds... don’t want to go over £300 really. Can anyone help? No idea what I need and don’t trust curreys not to over sell me something!

I'd say Windows 10, any i5 processor, 8gb RAM and an SSD. 128gb SSD as a minimum, 256 better but probably out your price.

I'm not familiar with that game but generally games (Minecraft, Sims, etc) rules out Chromebooks, hence Windows.

I have a similar laptop, refurbished from Amazon, within your price range and am happy with it. I work in IT and can't stand slow computers.

Ilmb · 22/09/2018 16:30

I have a 15% discount on acer, are they any good?

The one I’m getting rid of was a refurbished one and supposedly exactly what I needed... it isn’t and it’s a pile of shite so struggling to know who to trust!

Hmm... just checked Rust and it wants an i7, plus 2gb graphics card as well as the 8gb RAM. I'll be honest, I'd expect you to to struggle to get that fit £300.

Scienceforthewin · 22/09/2018 16:32

What is the laptop you have now? Do you know the spec?

Ilmb · 22/09/2018 16:37

I’m really crap at technology (hence my plea on here!) how would I know what my one has? It has to be replaced as the charging hole is wrecked and Iv had it repaired 3 times and I could’ve bought a new one so want to start from scratch. I could pay a bit more if it’s essential..

Is this any good...

You also need something with a dedicated graphics card really for Rust.

I’m looking for a new laptop of about a similar spec to what the requirements are for Rust and I’m expecting to have to pay over £500, possibly around £700.

NicoAndTheNiners · 22/09/2018 16:40

No it’s got a shit processor, it’s slow, and crappy graphics.

Ilmb · 22/09/2018 16:42

I could pay £500 if I had to, would just rather not! Grin you can tell I have no idea!

Quick look on amazon and I found this;

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lenovo-ThinkPad-Professional-Certified-Refurbished/dp/B01MQ53RI0/ref=mpssa111?ie=UTF8&qid=1537630829&sr=8-1&pi=ACSX2366SY340QL65&keywords=Lenovo+ThinkPad+X220+12.5%22+%281366x768%29+2nd+Gen+Core+i7-2620M%2C+8GB+RAM%2C+128GB+SSD%2C+WiFi%2C+WebCam%2C+Windows+10+Professional+64-bit+%28Certified+Refurbished%29

It won't be a thing of beauty, and you'd have to look at the graphics before deciding whether it will run Rust, but I'd say this is the sort of thing that might do you. Mine is also a Lenovo think pad and isn't beautiful/lightweight etc but cheap and fast.

This one would meet your Rust requirements, it’s the cheapest i7 one Curry’s do.

Ilmb · 22/09/2018 16:43

What’s a graphics card? Something I have to buy extra like an sd card?

OP posts:
Scienceforthewin · 22/09/2018 16:44

Celeron n4000 isn't a great processor and I'll always go 8gb RAM not 4.

Scienceforthewin · 22/09/2018 16:45

That Curry's on is nice, but obv more than £300 😁

Scienceforthewin · 22/09/2018 16:46

Realistically you'd want to buy the graphics card in with it, it's not something you can easily change/add.

Ilmb · 22/09/2018 16:48

Wow this is more complicated (and more expensive!) then I thought it would be! What if I got one that didn’t need to be able to play rust?

And why the hell is some survival game making a laptop purchase so expensive?! What makes that game different to others?

OP posts:
NicoAndTheNiners · 22/09/2018 16:52

The amazon one linked to earlier isn’t really any good for gaming, it has an inbuilt graphics card rather than a dedicated one. When you buy the laptop ff the shelf it makes no difference to you, as in I mean you don’t buy the graphics card. It’s something to do with how it’s wired up....I don’t really understand. But I know dedicated is good, integrated is bad. An integrated one won’t play enough frames per second and you get lag. Lag is bad.

NicoAndTheNiners · 22/09/2018 16:53

I got pc solutions to build a gaming pc for dd and specified every single component. I’m not overly techy but spent ages researching stuff and asking in forums. It ended up being cheaper getting a pc than a laptop. Plus if you need to upgrade bits down the line it’s easy enough to do or get done.

Ilmb · 22/09/2018 16:54

Oh my goodness I can’t stand the ‘mmuuuuuuum it’s lagging’!!!! My dc taught me what lagging was....

Any suggestions then for a good one excluding rust? I have 15% off acer online.... so happier to pay more with a 15% discount!

OP posts:
Biggreygoose · 22/09/2018 16:58

If your not playing Rust, what will you be doing on it?

NicoAndTheNiners · 22/09/2018 17:00

That refurbished amazon one is good if you’re not bothered about .rust.

Ilmb · 22/09/2018 17:02

Mainly the dc to play games on. Roblox, minecraft, silvergames etc?

I may do the odd typing on it like editing a form or using it for scanning and saving pdfs as that’s a bitch to do on my phone...

OP posts:
Biggreygoose · 22/09/2018 17:07

That refurbished Lenovo is about right then.

A new laptop for all that will be about £600. To get the performance and budget you will be looking at refurb.

Scienceforthewin · 22/09/2018 17:08

This is the cheapest Acer laptop (in their own store) which should play Rust, although the processor is a bit lower than the minimum spec. I'm not recommending it though, I'm not sure I'm keen on Acers;
