We need to update our computer and DH has suggested I get my own laptop as he uses his for work all the time. We have a wireles connection so we would both be able to surf the net and get rid of our stand alone but I don't know where to start although I quite like the Sony VAIO

McDreamy · 03/06/2007 18:52

I did think about that but as DH has a DELL using windows we thought we would be better sticking to the same (windows not DELL)

bewilderbeast · 03/06/2007 19:06

you can get windows for the mac if you want to stick to what you know. I use both, used to have 2 pcs at home but replaced one with the macbook and use a windows pc at work. I much prefer the mac and it is less prone to net based viruses and freeze ups.

At my last firm, we used Sony Vaios as a form of punishment. Grotesquely unreliable and some of the worst suport on the planet. Upgrades are a total rip off.
They look nice, and have very good screens, but shite battery life, and horrible compatibility issues. Drivers ? Oh how we laughed.

Apple gear is not as bad as it used to be, but even the BBC occasionally notices the way they extract urine from their punters.

I have a Dell M90.
Dell's default support is garbage, I had one of their chimps tell me to re-install Windows to deal with a cracked screen.
But their total care package (the most expensive one) is really rather good.

Got MIL an ACer, dirt cheap, worked for more than 18 months so far, not hassle. No idea about support.

DW got a Dell as well, it works.

Pruuni · 04/06/2007 21:57

Mac PowerbookG4
Nowt wrong with Mac
No virus problems ever
DH is a whizz so I never have problems

Carmenere · 04/06/2007 21:59

Acer Aspire 5630, got it at Christmas and it has been fab so far. Was around 450quid

ChasingSquirrels · 04/06/2007 22:00

Dell Inspiron 6000, had it 2 years I think (or maybe 3). Love it.

CantSleepWontSleep · 04/06/2007 22:09

Can't see what DC's problem with the Sony Vaio is. My dh is an IT consultant, and I also worked in IT (though am not a tecchie), and we both had them. Agree about battery life, but had no other problems.

I now have a mac book pro.

babygrand · 04/06/2007 22:10

Mine's a Compaq Presario. Had it a couple of years. Very pleased with it.

DominiConnor · 05/06/2007 09:25

A small group of people used their company cards to buy Vaios, without asking IT which I ran.
Their misery was relentess. Sony support is terrible, they took the piss, and it was only when a techie got on the phone that they stopped lying.
Sony are amongst the worst for providing software drivers for Windows. That can hurt a lot.

Laptops have a tougher life than desktop computers, so much so that when I was Test Director at PC Magazine, I ran an "endurance" test, which nearly all failed. Sony didn't have an entry...
But many laptops have a sedentary life, simply being used to free up space, and never leaving the office. Dying young under those conditions is pretty crap.
Sonys are very expensive compared to pretty much anyone else, and you should expect more from them, not less.
Memory and batteries from them are a complete rip off compared to anyone at all.

They do look pretty though. Shame that the "metal effect" is instead of strengthening, thin paint on thin plastic, causing them to be fragile.

JoolsToo · 05/06/2007 09:29

oh can anyone clue me up on wireless connection.

I have a LiveWire box but its a wired connection at the mo. I think I have to send for another disk to be wireless but am flummoxed as to how it will work. I only have one PC so is being wireless pointless?

vimfuego · 05/06/2007 09:31

We are VAIO addicts in our family. Fantastic screens, the quietest laptops you can buy, they run very cool so you can put them on your lap, they have very fast hard drive access too for laptops.

I have absolutely no problem with the batteries, and I've never had to call support so I can't comment on that. They are very light because they use aluminium frames which is why they are more costly.

The great many delighted VAIO owners will be totally puzzled by your comments DC.

ScoobyC · 05/06/2007 09:32

Oooh, warning about the Sony Vaio. We have had one for about 18 months and some of the keys have started not working properly and the touch pad doesn't work either. It doesn't seem very heavy duty. We do use it a lot in the evening but not all day for work so I don't think it has had particularly heavy usage.
