I've actually cried all over a computer. That I think I broke.

Or maybe windows 8 hates me.

I need a fecking drink.

I'm 46 years old, allegedly not technologically incompetant (I used to repartition and reinstall and everything when I had windows XP, just haven't needed to do it for years) and I've cried all over this virtually new computer and I think I am about to cry again. Like actually plopping tears and everything.

If I can't fix it my son gets two crap Christmasses in a row. ( Mil was dying in hospital last year, so not so grave, but his most wanted xams pressies are totally redundant without his 'puter.

Due to a FURBAR during a.... "go back to factory settings you laggy git faced computer" session ....things went horribly wrong. Mainly cos the computer was speaking in Italian and I was tired. Probably.

So I had amazon UK rush a proper full copy of windows 8.1 in Bloody ENGLISH to Italy. DHL finally found me after a tense 48 hours of increasingly heated phone calls with me yelling "how can I always be "customer out" if you have kept me trapped in the house for TWO DAYS!"

I got into BIOS (whatever that is) I changed the boot thingie to CD-rom drive as first choice (gingerly, never been in BIOS before) All went swimmingly, but then it hung for hours and It couldn't finish the last bit of a clean install.

So a youtubber siad delete partitions.

So I did. Well some of them. 2. ACER and USER

And then I clicked next and the fecking computer complained something was missing so it couldn't run the cd-rom drive. Or something like that.

I have spent 113 euros. And all I have managed to do is kill the computer more.

And christmas is ruined cos the computer shop is not taking any repairs in till he comes back in the New Year.

Dos anybody have any ideas what has gone so horribly wrong and how to put it right ?

And if you don't. Can you please start sticking pins in an effigy of the Windows 8 wholly annoyingly displeasuring start screen of pissingoffness.

Or pass a hanky.

Is this peri menopause making me an emotional wreck due to poxy software ?

Wine. I wish I had wine.

Be careful if you do post a link in geeky stuff, people are well meaning but I have seen some head to table advice over there from people who dont actually have a clueGrin.
Post up the results when its finished,I will help to the best of my ability, and I think BERTIE IS AROUND.

PedantMarina · 22/12/2013 09:40

We've got Windows 8. I'm just not feeling the "new&improved".

DP - formerly a network engineer and now an ICT teacher - can't get it to work properly.

Hugs from us, and would you like some wine and gin airlifted over?

lazydog · 22/12/2013 09:45

1sassylassy What, worse "head to table" advice than elsewhere where people post for IT advice...? At least over there there are lots of knowledgeable bods, too, that would hopefully quickly pick up on anything really off-base that's suggested to try.

Although, with the OS already entirely deleted, I don't see anything majorly damaging being suggested next... ;)

1:45am - I need sleep... Look after her please 1sassylassy Grin

CarpeVinum · 22/12/2013 09:48

Nah, it's actually easy money because most people are terrified to even try to solve the simplest of problems

I can't immagine why ! The one time I got all cocky.... i deleted everything.

I have to go ligt the fires, freezing cold, back in a mo.

I.ll try lazydogbut I,m not in your league, just glad the Mac fanboys havent turned up.

lazydog · 22/12/2013 09:57

PMSL! Are you me in disguise? I just had a stalk nosey through past posts of (yours ONLY in the geeky forum) and there was nothing I could find there that I wouldn't have written myself, right through your preference for AMD processors...hatred of Norton...advising Asus over Acer (ermm...sorry OP!) and now down to that last "Mac Fanboys" comment! It's actually quite uncanny!

I think Carpe's in safe hands Smile and now I really am going.......

CarpeVinum · 22/12/2013 10:04

would you like some wine and gin airlifted over?

Yes please !

I used to quite good at this. Not actual rumminging innthe gubbins. But I coulr reformatte, partition and reinstall an OS on a puter.

Now it's all....complicated.

I have left some messages on phones. In the hope that despite being sunday, somebody will let me use their puter to make a flashdrive if needs be.

It's on 30% now.

An the fire is on.

I am not going to tech board. I feel safe here. In good hands. And people explain so I actually understand (unlike bastard youtubers)

DH is a tech and works with this sort of stuff on a daily basis. He has said you simply need a hard drive controller from the Acer website. Once you have that it should all run smoothly. However, you do need to download it onto a pc, then move it with a USB flash drive. So I think you might need to hassle your neighbours.

CarpeVinum · 22/12/2013 10:08

ACER is a crp computer ?

Oh bollocoks. I read reviews on amazon researched diligently and everything.

I miss my iMac

But we had to get a windows machine cos, DS's school's technogubbins classrooms and learning envirments don't work on Macs and the thought of spending squillions just to run virtual windows felt ... pretty pointless.

Not one thing ever went wrong with any of my cheapo windows7 laptops either. Excpet for them dying cos I mumsnetted the buggery out of them and the fans gave up. and metled the motherboards.

CarpeVinum · 22/12/2013 10:13

Now emailing all students frantically. But think they are at mass.

Sunday is bugger of day to wheedle a facour in rural bits of Italy.

Ohhh... email from fave student whomis also good mate!

YES'

Sh is taking me out tonight and forcefeeding me alcopops becuase it was so funny last time I had a barcardi breezer and promptly started singing..... and OMG! she spoke to an old student of mine, an engineer who aso fixes computers as a hobby, he will come see my computer on Monday !!

Which is great.

But Iwant to fix it myself now.

It's a pride thing. I will ring him later and fix a time for Monday, but keep going in the meantime.

I have not cried all day!

Mention the mac word again and I,m offGrin

Seriously,I will be off shortly but will be back tonight as well as dipping in and out through the day.

If I was you my plan of action would be,

1 Let the scan disk complete and post up the results.
2 try and download the drivers on to a usb/flash drive, deffo the top one off the Acer website and the pack if you have the room on the flash drive.

CarpeVinum · 22/12/2013 10:15

When this is sorted, you need to get hold of a portable hard drive and make a system image,in fact anybody running a windows pc should always have a system image,it saves so much time and stress when problems do occur.

i dont hate Macs, they make some beautiful, great spec machines.i just hate the attitude of a lot of Mac users,my machine is better than yours etc.i have been known to snigger when reading about a mac problem because of course a Mac just works flawlesslly.

CarpeVinum · 22/12/2013 10:27

Actually Macs don't work perfectly.

I started with a BBC back in 1982, then had a long line of Macs before going for bargin bucket windows laptops cos I just couldn't afford Macs any more.

My bargin bucket windows machines crashed far less often than some of my Macs did. Especially the iMac (rev 2)

But I just like how I seem to get to grips with the Mac gubbins so much easiers.

Not likeing Windowws 8 at all. Don't understand why they didn't understand that a finger and a mouse pointer are different. Blimming thing starts throwing apps I didn't want at me everytime I move the poiter a bit sharpish. Feels like SUCH hard work. Windows 7 was fine.

OP posts:
CarpeVinum · 22/12/2013 10:29

But totally agree about the Mac User 'tude. Can be really rather annoying to hear "should have bought a Mac" when you ask how to get your windows machine working and you have a deadline looming.

That would have made me cry much much harder yesterday. My eyeballs may well have exploded.

1sassylassy · 22/12/2013 10:31

Are you uising classic shell, this can make your windows 8 pc look just like windows 7.

CarpeVinum · 22/12/2013 10:31

Maryz

Oh even if I get it up and running again, he is going to be doing all the tpuching from now on.

I will stay the other side of the room becuase I appear to be the Anti-Windows fairy.

OP posts:
CarpeVinum · 22/12/2013 10:33

I saw that, and wouldmprobably have installed if I hadn't been caught in a constant cycle of having to reset to factory settings so flipping often. Got scared of doing anything that might upset it.

It is a very PMT prone machine this one.

I reckon it was born under a cloud.

If I accidentally batter it with a sledgehammer can I claim under my house insruace Grin

I dont think you would have got so much help with a Mac,I have used the Mac forums over the years to sort out the dc,s ipods and there are so many unanswered queries.Apart from ds2 with his iphone,we are all windows and android now.

CarpeVinum · 22/12/2013 10:34

I tried to do that when I got it (I think) I kept buying bigger and bigger flashdrives, way bigger than it was telling me I needed, to do the ACER backup system wochamercallit...but it kept throwing a hissy fit and saying it was too small.

The bastard.
