can someone talk me through how to block porn on an ipod over wifi pls

ds has been watching porn on his ipod - the main computer is in the living room and never used unsupervised ... but when I gave him his ipod I naively assumed he'd be using it for music, games etc ...

anyway .....

I can't work out how to block porn sites from being accessed by his ipod as obviously that's not covered by the computer's protection (we have BT broadband)

can anyone talk me through how to do it (pref in words of one syllable ...)

You can set up parental restrictions on the IPod using a password. This is easy to do and quick. See here for detail

You can set up parental restrictions on your sons ITunes account (or the families account) See here for details

Depends what type of BT Broadband you have but it probably includes Free online security. Details can be found here. If you phone BT support they will (should) help you set it up if you are having problems. It would be good if you could get someone o help you do it so that you understand what you need to do. You can block certain sites, applications, words, etcetc you can also control when the Internet can be accessed which is useful if you can't trust your DS. You can get program's to email you details of every site visited through your Internet connection. Even if you don't use it you might want o tell your DS that you are having it installed.
Ps. Having a PC in a living room does not usually stop a determined teen from watching porn unless you are standing over him the whole time.

How old is your DS?

Tbh, I would concentrate on speaking to him about porn.

By all means, look for ways to limit him looking on his iPod, but that will not stop him viewing porn at a friend's house, or at school, if someone has a mobile phone with them.

Talk to him about porn, and why you don't want him viewing it. About the way in which women are exploited and hurt, and the false image that it gives of sex. Would you be able to do that?

he's 15 and we've had the talk (several actually) about porn - it's obviously made zilch difference

BT's security package only covers the computer so that's not what I need and I don't want to restrict his access to the internet completely so the apple restrictions aren't it either

with hindsight I would never have given him the ipod without something like the McGruff safeguard installed beforehand but stupidly I didn't appreciate that I was giving him unfettered access to everything on the internet with the ipod touch - I'm not sure how easy it would be to set something like that up now

What I really want is a block at the level of the wifi router - does that exist?

You can restrict other computers with BT but I need to check with DP. He's done s time restriction on DD's pc by logging into the router from another computer.

Really hoping you get some replies - can't help i'm afraid but am very keen to do the same on my bt router. Had all the same conversations with my ds to no avail.

Tricky.... I have teens and TBH 15 is when I'm taking off the net nanny/k9 and allowing them more internet freedom in the hope that they have learned what is appropriate and what isn't. I suspect that locking down your system- whilst a great idea in theory isn't going to stop him looking at porn at a mates house, on cloud free internet access or similar. Has he told you why he does it? Do you personally have your own ideas of what is OK/not OK to look at for kicks and does he??

Where does the line lie for teen boys today between internet porn now, lasts generations penthouse and top shelf mags or the underwear pages from the grattan catalogue for our grand parents?

The BT security package would apply to all you whole household network and would cover your sons IPod. Give BT a call I would hope imagine they will help.

The IPod parental restrictions and ITunes parental restrictions are really easy to set up.

I totally agree that you need to talk to your DS about it but I think the lure of porn can be very strong especially when it is so easy to see it. He may well see it at his mates houses but that is not quite as accessible.

I also didn't want my DC's to watch porn in my house as the sites are often virus ridden.

The Apple restrictions do allow free access to the Internet with the exception of adult rated sites. It is not perfect but it is pretty good.

Maybe you could have a look on the feminist board for ideas on how to talk about porn with a teen, highlighting the exploitation of women.

It does go hand and hand with the blocking of access.

TBH I don't think any amount of conversations is going to stop a teenage boy seeking out porn, especially when it's so accessible and mainstream, likely all his mates do it.

However the conversations are good, because they might influence what he absorbs from it, so don't feel all is lost. Also when he's a bit older he might think back to the discussion points and have that as a base for some more mature decisions.

I agree blocking it is a good idea too though.

ermm ... I think it's fairly obvious why he does it!

I've gone pretty hard on the exploitation angle .. and while he'll nod and say all the right things at the time, it's not actually making any difference to what he does

I thought the BT package only covered the main computer not tablets etc but will call them and check

It might make a difference in time. At the moment (sorry for TMI) his hormones are all over the place and his sex drive will be high with probably little release, and, well, some kind of visual stimulus makes it a lot quicker and more intense.

When he gets a bit older and the novelty wears off he'll probably then take in the exploitation thing and make a choice to stop using it, or seek out ethical stuff, or he might not care and carry on, but you've reduced the chance of that by having the discussion with him - that's all you can do :)

Of course young boys are horny inquisitive and will look at porn. And presumably if young girls were given the chance, they would look too.

I still will speak to my children about porn and how it harms those involved in the making of it.

Teaching him about it now may not make a difference, but it will spoil his fun make him think and hopefully he will later decide against it.

And they do. Plenty of evidence coming out now showing that around 2/3 of young men (not boys) and women (not girls) view porn regularly.

I'm sure that they will thank you for your indoctrination.

We installed Mobicip Mobicip software on DSs ipads.

It gives you complete control over the iPad including when they are allowed to access the internet. You can set age limits or entirely block certain content or put age limits on.

I also set up a Google account that gives me complete control over search and set parental controls on YouTube too. All password protected.

You need to pay for the upgraded version of Mobicip but it does send me a monthly report by email of everyuthing DSs have looked at including any blocked sites they may have tried to access, apps dpownloaded, etc.

It works outside the home as well as inside as it is attached to the actual ipad machine not the hub.

Its easy enough to set up but probablly will take a week of negotiation and tweeking to get the settings right for you and for DS to be able to use without blocking sites he uses that are legitimate.

For example it blocks BBC website as it contains content that it deems 'adult' or 'violent' but you can over ride the block on specific sites.

I'm interested in this too, we have a family Ipad which the DCs use a lot, also they use my Iphone and DH's Ipod touch. While I have set up a lot of restrictions on the devices they are a bit all or nothing, I don't want Safari or the camera switched off as I use them all the time myself.

Beta how have you set up the restrictions on Google and Youtube? They don't normally need passwords? Also, would having Mobicip installed be too restricting for average grown up use? I just mean general surfing etc.
