AmazIng new discovery with iPad

Trying to mn under bed covers.
Screen kept switching views, so I googled it. Turns out there a side switch which you can either make for silent typing or to stop the views switching but sadly not for both. So stealth mning still a bit tricky.

Bet you are all enthralled with my amazing discovery.

I had 98 apps open Shock Hoping my battery life is now much improved! Thanks for the tip!

Littlefish · 04/08/2012 19:39

God, I'm a luddite! how can I find out what software I'm running now?

How can I sync my iPad with iTunes? I've never used iTunes with my iPad.

EduStudent · 04/08/2012 20:06

If you're MNing iPading in bed, you can make it white on black so it's easy to read without being too bright. It's on the Accessibilty options in Settings>General. You can also choose to make it happen when you triple click the home button on the same menu Smile

UnderwaterBasketWeaving · 04/08/2012 20:18

Ooh, white on black is cool. StealthPad!

OhYouGreatGreatBritain · 04/08/2012 20:46

Edustudent, that sounds really helpful actually, thanks :)

Sorry, just trying things out. Blush

Anyone use the speech to text option? Does it actually recognise what you are saying?

SoupDragon · 04/08/2012 21:28

IME with the same thing on my iPhone, it's hit and miss. You do need to speak clearly and it does make mistakes.

Ns13 · 04/08/2012 22:00

This is brilliant. I've learnt so much

FriggFRIGG · 04/08/2012 22:22

Settings>keyboard>international keyboard>emoji

When you go back to your keyboard, press and hold the circular symbol on the left of the space bar...

Gives you a keyboard full of emoticons Grin 🌻

TeamGB2012 · 04/08/2012 22:35

Where can i dind the speech type thing?

RustyBear · 04/08/2012 22:58

It's in Settings-General-Keyboard-turn the Dictation switch to 'On'. It's only on the new iPad, though, not the original or iPad2. (Though there are apps that support dictation - I think Evernote is one.) once it's on, there's a microphone key next to the space bar.

I am dictating this. It's best if you do it in short phrases, as it's more accurate that way. Generally I find it quite accurate although you have to speak more slowly than normal or at least I do, but then I usually talk very fast anyway. Grin

It can't quite manage the smilies though, because it gives the word a capital letter, which doesn't work ? I had to edit that one.

Littlefish, you need to "sync" your iPad via iTunes - basically just plug it in your laptop/desktop. Once you plug it in, iTunes should open automatically assuming you have it installed in your laptop/desktop. If you don't, just download it from Apple. Once iTunes is open, it'll guide you through the syncing process (and once you sync, you'll have a back up of the contents of your iPad on your computer as well, in case anything happens to it).

You can check the version of your software in Settings/General/About then look at Version (mine says 5.1.1, so it's up to date).

SharpObject · 03/09/2012 23:32

Edustudent your tip is really helpful, I'm off to MN in bed without waking DH.

Thanks!

MyThumbsHaveGoneWeird · 03/09/2012 23:42

For internetting in bed download nightbrowser. You can turn the brightness right down. No more need to hide under the covers. Off to try out the apostrophe thing now...

SharpObject · 03/09/2012 23:53

Just tried to download night browser but it flashed up a adult content warning and asked me to confirm I'm over 17.

Is this a trick to download dragon butter and blue waffles?

Not to worried for myself as I am very much over and double 17 but my 4 yr old loves clicking new apps on the iPad......

MyThumbsHaveGoneWeird · 04/09/2012 01:05

How odd! No, it's just a browser. No dragon butter anywhere near my iPad!

MyThumbsHaveGoneWeird · 04/09/2012 01:08

I guess maybe because you can use a browser to access adult content? Only annoying thing is keyboard is v bright still.

janek · 10/09/2012 17:55

Just bumping to see what anyone else knows...

URMyDinosaur · 10/09/2012 19:14

URMyDinosaur · 10/09/2012 19:15

Oh that didn't work, 'twas meant to be a heart emoticon but didn't work. 😥

URMyDinosaur · 10/09/2012 19:15

That didn't work either. Oh well.

RebeccaMumsnet · 19/10/2012 16:55

Hi all,
Great thread, so much so, we have moved it to geeky stuff so that it doesn't disappear.

janek · 20/10/2012 08:44

Okay, i've done a clever thing - i've found some italian train times (on the trenitalia app, finally works with ios6) and some online bus timetables and i've taken a screenshot of each, so i don't have to be on the internet to find the information. It is now with my photos. I am very pleased with myself.

BabylonPI · 21/10/2012 11:48

Is the iPad mn app different to the iPhone one?

My iPad should arrive tomorrow and I am vair vair 'cited Grin
