AmazIng new discovery with iPad

Trying to mn under bed covers.
Screen kept switching views, so I googled it. Turns out there a side switch which you can either make for silent typing or to stop the views switching but sadly not for both. So stealth mning still a bit tricky.

Bet you are all enthralled with my amazing discovery.

shutthefrontdoor - when you see the apps at the bottom of the screen under the bar, then when you touch them a little red minus sign appears for you to close it.

Furball · 04/08/2012 11:16

meant touch/press them for a few seconds

I have just discovered I can scroll through a drop down list or pop up window on the safari browser by using two fingers to drag instead of one. E.g. If your fb on safari instead of the app and you want to see the list of how many people liked something, you get a little window up that shows the first eight or something. This has been driving me potty for ages!

Littlefish · 04/08/2012 11:44

Fab with the apostrophe thing.

Bag puss - I don't have a multitasking gestures option in general settings. Mine is an iPad 2, bought April 2011. Is yours a newer model?

sayanythingrogerjustrogerme · 04/08/2012 11:48

You are all fantastic (she says typing on her newly split keyboard, having shut down about a hundred apps).

sayanythingrogerjustrogerme · 04/08/2012 11:49

Littlefish, have you updated to iOS5? The multifingered gestures only came in with that operating system.

SoupDragon · 04/08/2012 11:52

I've just discovered that you can move the tabs you have open in Safari just by touching one and dragging it along the line to where you want it.

TeamGBIWI · 04/08/2012 11:54

soupy - for that apostrophe tip alone I love you!

SoupDragon · 04/08/2012 12:44

Has to be said I learnt it from MN back when the iPad was first launched :)

Littlefish · 04/08/2012 12:51

Sayanything - how do I update to IOS5 - what are the benefits (apart from the multi finger thing, I mean!)

Fuchzia · 04/08/2012 13:31

I've found that the iPad has a magnetic side that makes a fantastic if expensive pin cushion.

bagpuss · 04/08/2012 13:50

Little fish mine is first gen bought at the same time as yours but I have ios5 running. My dh would say always use the latest operating system (I have no idea why but it means you get the multi touch thing and also iMessage which means you can send texts to other apple users from your iPad using wifi - my mum and I spend hours doing this as does dd1). Oh, also ios5 means you don't have to connect to yor computer to sync and update things which means the iPad can be stand alone.

ShutTheFrontDoor · 04/08/2012 15:24

Thanks furball I had 64 apps open !

izzybizzybuzzybees · 04/08/2012 16:44

Does anyone know if there is a way to ensure emails you delete in iPad are deleted when you use a pc or vice versa? Tis very annoying!!

sayanythingrogerjustrogerme · 04/08/2012 17:01

Sorry Littlefish, RL intervened with MNting. Updating is easy, you should have a notification in settings anyway (Settings/General/Software Update), just click on update. There are quite a few new features, but of course none of them essential. For example, my home button started malfunctioning for some reason and iOS5 has an Assistive Touch feature (under Settings/General/Accessibility) that creates an extra, touch-screen home button you can use - which was great, until my normal home button sorted itself out.

SoupDragon · 04/08/2012 17:28

izzy, you need to go to Settings then Mail and select the email account in the accounts section. Select the email address then choose Advanced. Choose Deleted Mail and then there are options to delete it from the server (or not).

I think this is right.

UnderwaterBasketWeaving · 04/08/2012 17:37

Amazing, thanks for all these tips! (especially the °)

Does anyone know if there's a way to do subscript and superscript?

Littlefish · 04/08/2012 17:49

Sayanything - thanks for the info. I've just had a look at settings/general and I don't have a 'software update' notification or option. Any ideas???

SoupDragon · 04/08/2012 17:55

my software update option is under settings-general-third option from the top. It may be that this comes with a prior software update and you will need to synch with iTunes on your PC to update yours.

sayanythingrogerjustrogerme · 04/08/2012 18:04

Littlefish, what soupdragon says, you may have to do this via iTunes. What software does it say you are using now?

Thegoddessblossom · 04/08/2012 18:07

Omg I've just split the keyboard that is beyond cool

Thegoddessblossom · 04/08/2012 18:12

'''' ok that apostrophe thing has been bugging me for ages thank you!!!

franke · 04/08/2012 18:37

I don't have a software update option. Why would that be?

franke · 04/08/2012 18:39

Oh sorry - just saw littlefish's post. I'll go to itunes. And thanks for the ' and " tips. Priceless.

UnderwaterBasketWeaving · 04/08/2012 18:49

Ha! I downloaded Fruit Ninja someone mentioned earlier.

16mo DS thought it was hilarious! We weren't very good at it, but he cackled away at it all. Brilliant! Thank you!

No suggestions on the super/sub script?
