...I don't think I want an iPhone. I don't think.. .but I'm impressed at how FAST the 4S is.

Does anybody know about speed/functionality of the HTC One X (or any of the other new ones) vs the iPhone 4S (specifically the 4S - no point getting one if I don't get the newest IMO)

I dont like my htc (desire) as it has sd card problems, freezes and has too little phone memory so keep getting messages to say it that the phone storage is low even though I have hardly any apps

JarethTheGoblinKing · 29/07/2012 20:00

I've got an HTC Desire and it's been fine - it's almost 2 years old though and I'm due an upgrade, so need some info on the new ones.

It does have issues with storage space though, so room for apps is limited - does anybody know if that is better with the new range?

You can always move apps to the SD card. But the One X comes with 32GB of internal storage anyway so this shouldn't be a problem in any way.

HTC are good at top end and okay at budget, but they don't do in between massively well. The One X is an excellent phone. Doooooo it!

JarethTheGoblinKing · 29/07/2012 20:06

I use the app2SD thing, and move everything I can, but still find that I run out of room for things. Confused
Still, it's the only issue I have with my phone and if that means i can't have a butt load of apps then that's fine.

Is the One X the best? Is it speeeedy?

iPhones are very fast and responsive, because the OS is written specifically for the phone whereas with Android the software is written and then you're limited by the spec of the phone as to whether you get the most out of the OS. But TBH any of the new top end ones are extremely good contenders. I'd look at the S3 as well, but the One X is a very nice phone, and even though I have a Samsung I really love the HTC unlock screen and the way the home screen is more centred, and the stupid whistled tune that the new samsung ones come with is irritating. (I work in a phone shop).

BertieBotts · 29/07/2012 20:10

The one x is the best HTC at the moment. If you want to compare specs with the iphone or the samsung etc try looking on www.gsmarena.com - it's a good site for comparing phones.

The internal storage thing is a pain in the arse. I have that problem with my phone and I really want to upgrade because of it.

VivaLeBeaver · 29/07/2012 20:11

Why not a Samsung galaxy? The s3 is faster than the iPhone.

I had a htc desire and had the same problems as mentioned earlier, not enough space even with a big sd card to put apps on. I've got a galaxy s2 now and love it. Perfect phone IMO.

BertieBotts · 29/07/2012 20:12

www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s_iii_vs_htc_one_x-review-759.php

Just seen this - written before the SIII was introduced but still a pretty nice review of both phones.

VivaLeBeaver · 29/07/2012 20:13

Oh and I've had no storage problems at all with the s3 and have lots of apps.

BertieBotts · 29/07/2012 20:13

Also the blue S3 is very pretty Grin

JarethTheGoblinKing · 29/07/2012 20:17

Thanks Bertie - all very useful.
Have looked at that site and the comparison is intersting (though some of it totally baffles me)

4S v One X...

JarethTheGoblinKing · 29/07/2012 20:18

Oh, xposts there. I admit, I haven't really looked at Samsung - have an HTC at the moment and like it soo..

but I will have a look Grin

Hurrah, 3 options Wink

Viva - what is good about the S3 (I am going to read some reviews, but interested in opinions over the HTC)

OP posts:
JarethTheGoblinKing · 29/07/2012 20:24

Oh Viva - what's the keyboard like on the Samsung? I have found the iPhone one better than my HTC Desire for my ham-fisted typing Grin

OP posts:
BertieBotts · 29/07/2012 20:28

Keyboard is irrelevant anyway as you can download apps which replace the keyboard. Samsung uses Swype, though, which some people like (I don't) but the autocorrect on that rivals iphone, I think anyway.

I personally use Swiftkey X which is a paid-for app, but it manages to correct even drunk typing excellently Grin and can also predict your next word which is great if you're lazy, but does so in a non intrusive way so if you'd rather just type that's not an issue. One thing I like about it as well is that in the settings for it you can nose at how many words you've misspelled, how much time it's apparently saved you, and see a map of where you most often miss letters.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 29/07/2012 20:34

AHhh good point. I forgot all about that, thank you.

Very helpful thread. It's not between the SIII and the One X I think.

Just got the One X - it's amazing.

I managed to get the most unreal, clear photos of the men's cycling road race when they went past, bearing in mind they were pelting along at about 35mph. The speed of the photos was a revelation.

The One X has been rated better than the iPhone 4 in quite a few comparison review sites I've seen.

I would also be inclined to look at the Samsung Galaxy SIII. I know this is one model ago, but DH has a Galaxy SII for personal use, and an iPhone 3 for work, and he says his SII is SO much nicer.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 29/07/2012 21:13

Thanks, NWNH Grin

(I'm beginning to make my mind up... any more opinions?)

I have the s3. I love it!

Ds has an iphone (3gs) and it just feels tiny in comparison.

I don't know anyone with the one x but I have heard that the battery isn't very good.

Get the s3. Its fab!

NoWayNoHow · 29/07/2012 21:23

Just read some other posts - if you're worried about keyboard on HTC, don't. The screen size is 4.7 inches vs the iPhone 3.5 inches, so when you turn it to landscape, the keyboard is mahoosive.

Thisis the first time I've gone for a touch screen kepboard (have normally tried to stick to a physical QWERTY in the past) for the same reasons, but this is ridiculously easy to type on. Same for Samsung (not quite as big a screen, but still bigger than the iPHone)

Trills · 29/07/2012 21:26

Galaxy S3 is better than HTC One X IMO (my boss has one and my boyfriend the other and I've compared how much they complain about it and how much they say it's awesome, taking into account their differing personalities and propensity to complain or praise)

Trills · 29/07/2012 21:28

I agree about Android being better for typing because you can download alternative keyboards that learn how you type (like SwiftKey as Bertie mentioned).

Oh, and on the S3 (not the One X) you can take the back off and switch out the battery - useful if you are out and doing something battery-heavy. A pair of spare batteries and a wall charger for them is about £25 from Amazon.

NoWayNoHow · 29/07/2012 21:35

Review comparing all three

Naoko · 29/07/2012 22:47

I was very, very tempted by the One X because I loved and adored my Desire and it looks very good. I ended up going with the S3 in the end, though - there wasn't much in it, but the S3 has a removable battery and the One X doesn't. Seeing as 'take the battery out for a second, then put it back in and reboot the phone' solves quite so many android-related ills, I didn't think I wanted a phone where that wasn't an option.

I've had my S3 about a week and a half now and I love it. It needs a good cover IMO, the back's quite thin, but having put one on I'm now 100% happy with it.

niceguy2 · 29/07/2012 23:05

Firstly the next iphone (5?) will be out in a couple of months. So if you get a 4S now, you are making a 2 year commitment for a phone which will be outdated soon.

The S3 is the latest & greatest so won't be outdated for a while yet.

As a huge Apple fan I have to say that it was mainly the screen size which made me move to Android. Sorry but 3.5" is simply too small and it appears Apple is going to reluctantly agree if the rumours are true. The next phone should be slightly larger.

S3 screen is HUGE in comparison. It's speedier than Speedy Gonzalez on rocket powered roller skates. It has nifty little features like it won't turn the display off whilst it sees your eyes. Unlike an iphone you can swap your battery out. A feature which came in terribly handy last weekend when I was almost out of juice. I just swapped with a mate who was on full charge.

And if you switch to using the Swype keyboard then you can type/text much quicker than typing the traditional way.
