...I don't think I want an iPhone. I don't think.. .but I'm impressed at how FAST the 4S is.

Does anybody know about speed/functionality of the HTC One X (or any of the other new ones) vs the iPhone 4S (specifically the 4S - no point getting one if I don't get the newest IMO)

I've just downloaded swype on my Desire and its made a huge difference. I can't believe how much easier it is. Hardly have to type anything!

Thanks all, will have a play with the Samsung when I'm in town, hadn't really considered it before.

.... And definitely not getting the I phone :-)

Just marking my place to see if this makes any sense when I'm not exhausted.

I need to buy a new phone, but it bores & baffles me. I'd like to just win one so I don't have to make any decisions - or spend any money - Grin

Can recommend SlideIT (keyboard) for Android.

I use it on all but my Archos tablet (because on the tablet, they've allocated a portion at right hand side of window to the home / back / etc function "keys" and it obscures the kbd [then again, the standard keyboard on that tablet is fine and with a 7" screen, large enough anyway]

Pretty sure you can have SlideIT for 14 days (or more) free trial. I was happy and bought it almost as soon as I'd started using it (along with TuneIn, the only two apps I've bought so far).

JarethTheGoblinKing · 30/07/2012 10:36

Been looking at costs for the Samsung and the HTC and the One X is significantly cheaper.. there doesn't seem to be much in it (apart from the Samsung being a lot newer) so probably will go for the One X.

Now.. time to barter with O2 Grin

Thanks NetworkGuy - I'll try SlideIT

TuneIn is fab - thought it was free though?

NoWayNoHow · 30/07/2012 14:21

Jareth have a look at Buy Mobile Phones. They have contract options and pay as you go options with all major providers and have significant reductions on phone cost etc. Quick delivery too.

niceguy2 · 30/07/2012 15:20

OneX battery life is much worse. They've also done an Apple and sealed the battery so you can't swap it out.

Other than that there's not much difference. There's no eye thingy or popup play but these are small things. OneX comes with Beats Audio app which could be a bonus if you use it a lot as a music player.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 30/07/2012 18:59

Is the One of X battery worse than the desire? I do find it annoying that you can't swap out the battery, but then I never had to with my current phone

OP posts:
niceguy2 · 30/07/2012 19:56

The Desire is an old phone now so difficult to compare. But my GF has a HTC Sensation and the battery life on that was pretty dire. She could barely make it through a day without charging it...even when she didn't use it!

In the end I bought another battery from eBay and it's like night & day. Despite it being unbranded she can now go 1.5 days between charges.

The One X has quite the reputation for being bad as well. I've not had one personally but a good friend of mine who owns one has also commented on the fact it's poor.

In fact some quick googling and I found this:

S3 vs One X

When it comes to Android, I've personally always preferred the looks and features of HTC. I just prefer Sense UI to Touchwiz. But I do have to say that hardware wise, Samsung is miles ahead.

NoWayNoHow · 30/07/2012 20:23

My One X lasts 2 days, but that's because I turn 3G off unless I need to use it (which is probably 2 0r 3 times a day) so it's not constantly pulling on data for updates, emails, etc. However, I do use wireless a lot when out and about in Starbucks places where its free, and have Bluetooth on whenever I'm in the car so my handsfree works.

I guess it'll be down to the way you wish to use it?

JarethTheGoblinKing · 30/07/2012 20:27

Ah that's interesting, thank you. I rarely use 3G, and only the turn it on when I need it (I'm usually somewhere with wireless). My HTC lasts about a day and a half, even with a 2yo battery so I'm obviously quite light with usage. Hmmm, interesting though.

I would say the battery on my s2 lasts at least twice as long as the battery on my old Desire. With the desire I had to charge it every evening. If I'd used it quite a bit in the day it would often run out of juice early evening.

With the s2 if I have it on but not using it in the evening its probably about 80-85% still. Even if I've surfed a bit, rang a few people, etc its not normally under 50%.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 30/07/2012 20:54

NoWayNoHow - Have you used buymobilephones before? I've had a look at reviews online and it doesn't look to promising. Confused

OP posts:
NoWayNoHow · 30/07/2012 21:03

I've used it for my last 2 contracts. It's not a personal, loving service, but it gets you the phone you want, quickly, for a good price, and on the contract you want.

TBH, I've never had any issues with them, but maybe I'm lucky. DH used them to get all 17 work phones he needed for his business, and didn't have any issues, and also got 2 Samsung Netbooks thrown in.

I had more problems with the networks themselves and the whole porting issue (Buy Mobile Phones don't do that for you)

NetworkGuy · 31/07/2012 04:20

BB - yes TuneIn is available free too. The paid-for copy allows record (unfortunately only really suitable for speech, and only playable through TuneIn) and (to my annoyance) sometimes pops-up an invite to "share" my listening choices with others.... WTF! Don't know anyone with variety of stations I listen to Grin

I will have to try the Pro and Free versions side by side to see if thins like alarm and sleep timer are in free version, plus getting choice of different streams. For example, listening to FiveLive right now, and can choose from 48k WMA, or 48k, 56k, or 96k AAC streams. 128k more common on music stations of course.

NetworkGuy · 31/07/2012 04:30

[ Think I will probably spend the small sum of US $5 for WinAmp Pro, as I have used WinAmp for nearly 15 years, and it is worth far more than that for the effort that has been put in over the years. ]

BertieBotts · 31/07/2012 17:03

Ah! I see. I tend to use it on 3G anyway and other even slower networks so I don't think the higher quality would be worth it for me. I didn't know ti had an alarm function though, I'll have to see if that's available in free.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 11/08/2012 15:09

Well, Got the One X Grin

I'm SO glad I ditched the iPhone idea early on, and v happy with the HTC. Samsung was lovely but I like HTC sense and the price just decided it really.

Thanks for all the input!

OOI, what deal did you get (or was this an upgrade on an existing contract, please) ?

Just looking around I found a 26/month deal (lots of texts, 750 MB internet [which is tiny, as I can use 500 MB a day on internet radio] and no more than 200 minutes of voice calls [I already have 600 minutes on Three 15/month contract so was going for the phone [will use Wi-Fi] and texts for business use) on AffordableMobiles or e2save and was therefore interested to know what you found.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 11/08/2012 19:22

It was an existing contract, but costs me hardly anything. I barely use any data (3mb last month), as I'm almost always near WiFi. Just 200 mins and unlimited texts with 100mb data and it'll be under £18. Did have to pay £100 for the phone though. Couldnt get a better price than that (and I tried quite hard!). Via O2 direct.
