What is flowering in your garden which shouldn’t be?

My garden is having a real second flush this year. All of the perennials and the roses which were looking pretty ropey (well, dead in some cases) have cheered up with the cooler, wetter water and are looking spectacular. Flowering alongside them is a rhododendron. I noticed the other day it was really budding up. Today it has burst into flower. Four or five different buds have opened and there are at least that many still to open. This is completely out of sync. It is particularly confusing as a few fronds from the neighbour’s wisteria are growing through it and that is also in bloom. I could easily take some photos and pretend it was April/May time.
The camellias alongside the rhododendron seem to be looking as I’d expect for this time of year. I don’t want them to get out of sync as, if they don’t flower when they’re supposed to, I’ll have nothing in flower in that section of then garden then.

I've had a second flush from oriental poppies. Pretty exciting 😊

ShrimpBoil · 30/09/2025 18:06

Honeysuckle and magnolia! They're enjoying the occasional rain.

ThreePears · 02/10/2025 15:07

Strawberries.

Strawberries.

Wow. Is it just flowers or do you think you’ll get fruit.

Fushias have had a second glorious bloom. Evening Primrose is still going

A week ago I passed an amazing rose bush

savourthecrumpet · 02/10/2025 15:38

Roses!

Myblueclematis · 02/10/2025 15:41

Clematis Montana which bloomed in spring but I have had odd flowers opening up for about four or five weeks. Think it did that last year too.

abathofmilkwithladydi · 02/10/2025 15:43

Roses. New strawberries growing every day. Have had a glut of raspberries this week. Bonkers

LemondrizzleShark · 02/10/2025 15:49

I have spent the last six months trying to scare snails and slugs away from my dahlias. I tried crushed shells, ground coffee, a cloche, copper mesh. No flowers, which I assumed was down to being stressed/chomped

They started flowering last fucking week. They are lovely, but it is October. I’m going to have to dig them up in a week or two.

Limth · 02/10/2025 15:50

Choiysa and camelia.

Redrosesposies · 02/10/2025 15:53

My fuchsias and cosmos have only just started

Lou802 · 02/10/2025 15:56

I have a Marsh marigolds flowering, normally it's April/May but they can flower again normally in August. But even more bizarre I have Leopard's bane flowering, that's definitely a spring flower.

FatLarrysBanned · 02/10/2025 15:57

Potted hyacinths🪻that flowered on my kitchen window cill in the spring were cut down and then put outside the back door in a sunny spot. They've sprouted green shoots again. Not sure if I'll get anything else but they're trying.

Also my 90 year old neighbour demanded I passed over a dead strawberry plant hanging basket after I had neglected it, confident she could do something with it. The bugger has risen from the dead and is abundant with berries which she picks with glee every time she sees me in the garden. 🍓

They already fruited heavily this year in June, so I doubt we'll get any more. Hang on, I'll just pop down the garden to have a look............

..... there's one tiny green knobble so far but I shouldn't think it will come to much.

Lurkingandlearning · 02/10/2025 16:02

@ThreePears even a tiny green bobble is amazing this late. I don’t know why but that’s made me very happy 😃 thank you

Pandorea · 02/10/2025 16:05

My foxgloves that I grew this year to flower next summer are now sporting fairly weedy flowering stems. I presume they aren’t going to flower next summer. Does anyone know?

ChocHotolate · 02/10/2025 16:07

I was given a tiny strawberry seedling earlier this year which has really grown despite me basically ignoring it. I now have a (tiny, green rock hard) strawberry

nickdrakeslovechild · 02/10/2025 16:08

So much! My cosmos have only just started and look amazing. My rose is in bud again, the foxgloves are also in bud and I have 3 Strawberries that are actually turning red. Bonkers

Standard rose has lost most of its leaves yet is still covered in flowers and buds. I've still got gladioli in flower, flowers on the jasmine, the borage has seeded itself everywhere and the dead stems have produced new shoots and flowers! One if the azaleas has decided to flower but it did that last year and flowered again in the late spring.

LibertyLily · 02/10/2025 16:38

Clematis Armandii, heucheras and some of the astrantias.

A few of our David Austin roses too, but even when we lived in Wales it wasn't unusual for those to flower into November.

Yes the borage has self seeded like never before. It's taking over, will it die off in the winter?

RedwallMattimeo · 09/10/2025 13:56

It’s crazy, isn’t it?
My roses are still going strong but I tend to expect them to flower well into November now.
I am envious of a previous posters dahlias which have finally kicked into action as mine are still at the leafy stage, as they have been for about 2 months now! Such a disappointment as they were glorious last year.

Roses and a camelia looks like it's about to!

Wadadli · 09/10/2025 15:37

Geraniums

Rozendantz · 09/10/2025 15:37

Not flowering (thankfully), but yesterday I spotted a bloody daffodil just starting to poke through the soil. It's October!!!
