What is flowering in your garden which shouldn’t be?

My garden is having a real second flush this year. All of the perennials and the roses which were looking pretty ropey (well, dead in some cases) have cheered up with the cooler, wetter water and are looking spectacular. Flowering alongside them is a rhododendron. I noticed the other day it was really budding up. Today it has burst into flower. Four or five different buds have opened and there are at least that many still to open. This is completely out of sync. It is particularly confusing as a few fronds from the neighbour’s wisteria are growing through it and that is also in bloom. I could easily take some photos and pretend it was April/May time.
The camellias alongside the rhododendron seem to be looking as I’d expect for this time of year. I don’t want them to get out of sync as, if they don’t flower when they’re supposed to, I’ll have nothing in flower in that section of then garden then.

My cherry blossom tree has exploded with pale pink flowers - guess it's been quite mild weather up till now

TeeBee · 14/10/2025 18:43

Honeyberries and strawberries seem to think it’s spring.

Meadowfinch · 14/10/2025 19:20

Flowering at the moment - roses, winter jasmine, nerines, courgettes, early pink crocuses.

shellyleppard · 14/10/2025 19:23

My spring bulbs are all sticking their heads out already....

Cosmos, geraniums and agapanthus. Have been having an Autumn tidy up and cut back and felt a bit mean cutting then back when still a bit more life in them. Been a great year thanks to the warm Summer.

mamaduckbone · 14/10/2025 21:22

My cosmos is only just flowering, roses are having a second go, the dahlias are still going strong and I had one lovely little ripe strawberry last week.

newtlover · 18/10/2025 17:57

lupin is blooming!

Nannyfannybanny · 18/10/2025 18:02

Oldraver, omg that must have been really painful 🤣. We're in the SE corner,10 minutes away from the sea, roses pretty much flower all year..we had a few flowers on an azalea a few weeks ago, and a pale mauve rhododendron is now in full flower. The Choysia often flowers in winter.

NutButterOnToast · 18/10/2025 18:04

My cyclamen are looking fabulous, and we're getting a second lot of poppies springing up. My canna is still going well, the foliage was definitely starting to die off this time last year but no sign yet.

Not flowering, but I cleared the edge of the lawn yesterday and found some of the daffodil bulbs are poking up already.

familyissues12345 · 19/10/2025 20:48

Tulip bulbs are poking through! Also roses are flowering

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 20/10/2025 11:14

I have new shoots on crocosmia, which I wouldn’t have expected until spring.

dairydebris · 20/10/2025 11:23

Is this because plants are coming out of a period of dormancy that they went into because of the exceptionally dry summer? And they dont know the difference between dormancy because of drought and dormancy because of cold?

Ethosuximibe · 20/10/2025 12:17

My Salvia Hot Lips and Amethyst Lips are living their best lives at the moment. The purple Aster generally flowers late but is also taking over that corner of the garden.

Roselily123 · 20/10/2025 12:19

Viola , self seeded after spring / summer.
a random dahlia has appeared
the geraniums still look good

I have spent the last six months trying to scare snails and slugs away from my dahlias. I tried crushed shells, ground coffee, a cloche, copper mesh. No flowers, which I assumed was down to being stressed/chomped

They started flowering last fucking week. They are lovely, but it is October. I’m going to have to dig them up in a week or two.

I had loads last year , in summer, but the one I planted on the opposite side did not flower …..until now.
Maybe it’s the position not the snails.

CaptainMyCaptain · 20/10/2025 12:27

Roses, marigold, still some petunias, borage, cosmos, nasturtiums and GLADIOLI!

NebulousSadTimes · 01/11/2025 13:35

I noticed yesterday that a couple of my Primula auricula plants have flowers.

gingercat02 · 01/11/2025 13:41

I have peas, golden raspberry and strawberries. I have unripe fruit on the strawberries too.
There were flower buds when I pulled the tomatoes out last weekend.
One of my dahlia has has been flowering for months.

CrepuscularCritter · 01/11/2025 13:41

Not exactly flowering, but DH presented me with a small but perfectly formed strawberry earlier.
