re veg patch: thinning out occurs to allow the seedlings to become plants, so you need to remove approximately two out of every three seedlings ( dont waste them, plant the seedlings you remove where other seed haven't grown) do the thinning out before they get too big ( when leaves touch is usually good bet)

Good gracious - May!!

Will do. They're toasty and (hopefully) safe in my shed at the mo and come out for a bit of fresh air on a nice day.

Monkeybird · 06/04/2008 16:32

is it essential to have a greenhouse/shed to grow own veg?

can I just use windowsill instead for things that need growing from seed?

ktmoomoo · 07/04/2008 10:02

Yes you certainly can, one little tip is to stand the pots/trays on some foil, this will reflect the light once the seedlings have started growing. Watch the watering though, especially as they are indoors and can dry out. However, avoid overwatering as this will cause the seeds to rot off very quickly, sounds a tricky balance but its actually a very easy learning curve.

pumkin growing : you need to sow the seed in soil based compost now (john Innes no1) grow them in a pot, keeping them moist and warm until they have at least 2 or 3 leaves.(Put a layer of fine gravel around the seedlings to keep the slugs at bay or a continuous band of grease about an inch wide around the pot) When it comes to planting them, you need to plant them in soil which has been well dug in with manure, in a good sunny aspect, keep them well watered and feed them well, (once every week with cheap tomato food should do) If slugs are a problem, surround the plants with gravel or ashes in a continuous circle or a jamjar with beer in(they get attracted to the sweet smell and crawl in and drown) A non organic way is slug pellets.

Hi there, have you ever grown red hot pokers from seed? I have some seeds and don't want to cock up..are they easy to do? Was juts going to put in seed trays on my windowsill in house..will that do?
TIA!!

Countingthegreyhairs · 10/04/2008 20:15

thanks for pumpkin info! much appreciated!

my terrace is only sunny from 2pm ish until 5 pmish - wd that be OK for pumpkins - it's very hot and bright while sun is on it ....

have you found coffee grounds to be effective against slugs??

ktmoomoo · 10/04/2008 20:17
