Err, sorry for confusion but if that was to me I was going to start them off indoors and then transplant outside to a border, not a pot...please ignore if not to me!

ktmoomoo · 10/04/2008 20:20

Hi KTMM... How do I make a bed for growing veggies?

The soil itself is good but has lots of little stones. (A few sack fulls of little stones like those used for making roads/concrete). It's too much effort to take them all out. It used to be covered in brambles and I have had enough digging out the roots.

So I was thinking compost and soil layered on (how deep??). and plant on top.

Will this work or do I have to get the stones all out?

sweetgrapes · 10/04/2008 20:51

Another question...

I have inherited a compost bin which I have dutifully filled up as and when possible for the last few months. It always sinks down and I have about a foot of 'stuff' inside.

It is cold so I though maybe it's 'died'. I peeped through the opening and saw the bottom is teeming with worms. Didn't really have the courage to open it (Visions of worms rolling out).

Anyway, how do I get compost out of it? Will it have worms in it? Should I empty it all out and spread in the bed? If so, how to I fill compost bin with worms again?

In a nutshell, wtf do I do wih the bl*ing thing?

sweetgrapes · 10/04/2008 20:51

Abs newbie gardener hence the stupid questions.

ktmoomoo · 10/04/2008 20:53

re:veggie patch : little stones should be no problem but the brambles need to come out im afffaid ,systemic weed kiiler will kill them off and see to those horrid roots too

OP posts:
sweetgrapes · 10/04/2008 21:00

I have already hacked off the brambles so the weed killer won't work now will it?

Does every inch of root have to be dug up? (I know the answer to this one!!)

ktmoomoo · 10/04/2008 21:00

yes you can use it and yes it will be full of worms , just chuckn veggie patch worms and all , if you want to you can leave a few worms and compost in bottom of bin to start again

OP posts:
ktmoomoo · 10/04/2008 21:03

no if you have removed brambles no need to weed kill unless they grow back , just dab weed killer on individual root,
fork over pach , no need to remove all roots

Hi Kt! Could I have some tomato advice please? I was given 9, 5 survived and are now 10 inches tall. Do I need to pinch the top bit out and when can they go outside? I remember doing this to a plant years ago to make it bushier. Forgive the thick question, but I've never done this before

Oh! and when do I start feeding them?

weebleswobble · 10/04/2008 21:09

Should have said they are beef tomato plants!!

ktmoomoo · 10/04/2008 21:35

re tomatoes ; firstly you do not pinch out the tops. the seedlings need to go in idividual pots and support each plant with a smal cane or stick ,if are going in garden deont put out until last weekend in may at the earliest,if going in green house can go in now .do ont feed till are out in garden ,because this will force them on too quick

which way are raspberrys best facing

sophy · 11/04/2008 13:56

What exactly does "sow under glass" mean?

Does it just mean inside (on windowsill if you haven't got a greenhouse).

Or does it mean in a propogator thing with a lid?

Furball · 12/04/2008 08:03

I think ktmoomoo has gone on garden leave

ktmoomoo · 14/04/2008 13:17

east to west for rasberries so plants face south

OP posts:
ktmoomoo · 14/04/2008 13:23

under glass means :seeds in pots need to be covered with platic[hard]or bit of glass ; this could be on a window sil of in green house and of course a propergator , the glass produces condensation and heat
