Artificial grass - yes or no?

ChicagoBears · 01/05/2023 21:40

I have a substantial garden, some has porcelain tiles but it’s mostly loose stone which looks bare and is difficult to use so I was considering artificial grass.

I know there’s lots of grades of grass, I’d opt for the premium grade but wanted to garner opinion, what (if any) are the drawbacks of artificial grass? Will I love to regret it?

It depends on the subbase that's used under the fake grass also the type of fake grass

I'm sure it is just as good as real grass. Not 🙄

Well it isn't going to properly soak up into the environment is it.

It will just stay there underneath or in the 'grass' 🤢

No it does not. When laying artificial grass you dig around 6 inches more if you choose to . U then put weed membrane down (first) on top on the soil. You then use granite stone. Or limestone (which drains very well) you then use granite dust . Then you put the fake grass on top. You can get backing that is not latex so the dog wee /mess does not sit there.

What a complete and utter waste of time and money for artificial 'grass' when you can just have the real thing. 🙄
Totally fucking up with our ecosystem.

If it isn't broke, don't fix it was fake shit.

PatientZorro · 03/05/2023 08:29

Nooooo, don’t do it OP! Looks horrible, awful for wildlife and the environment, fake grass is just all round grim. Much nicer to have the real thing.

AlwaysGinPlease · 03/05/2023 08:35

Even the expensive stuff looks fake, because it is. Bad for the environment and hideously tacky. Buy turf.

It depends on people's situations. I have a child with disability. So does another poster on this thread. Also disabled and elderly who can't keep up with the garden anymore

It really messes up with our ecosystem and no matter how much money is spent on it, it looks tacky, fake and cheap.

That is not the point and you know it.

If everybody decided to put down fake grass. Humans would die very quickly because insects wouldn't be able to survive and pollinate.

It is tacky and chavy fake grass.
Looks fake no matter how much money and time is spent on it.

HeyDemonsItsYaGirl · 03/05/2023 09:52

It looks terrible. No exceptions.

You've obviously got your own dislike of artificial grass which is fine. But many people - myself included - have reasons why artificial grass is used.

We have a small garden that turned into a mud bath that was constantly not draining properly. It could not be used by my little girl. We got artificial grass and it's been a game changer. She can be out in all weathers, as can our dog.

Since having artificial grass, we never have a problem with the rain draining or puddling.

Yes and extensions for disabled people, which I got too and sadly used up some of our garden. Should those be banned too?

ClaireandTed · 03/05/2023 09:55

Unfortunately there has to be some compromise in life rather than a blanket 'this is evil, so there'.

Nobody is disagreeing with the environmental impact of fake grass, just pointing out that where possible if those of us who use it make effort to create additional areas for wildlife, and do many, many other things for the environment, we are not terrible people.

Ps My New Home my comment about extensions wasn't aimed at you x

RoseBucket · 03/05/2023 09:57

Love this! Two years ago I was pulled apart on here for saying how shit it was for the environment and wildlife and now many people are catching up. Nice to see how many people are against it, I hope the ban does come in.

But the poor ecosystem and the environment if everybody had your mindset..

Not that people should have to explain their reasoning for having it but hey, thank goodness not everybody is as judgemental as you 🙂

Nobody thinks you're terrible people, they just think plastic grass is terrible.....which it is from an environmental perspective.

If you've already got it and you have your own reasons then fine, it's probably better that you use and enjoy it before it gets ripped up and sits in a landfill site somewhere forevermore. But nomatter how much other environmentally friendly stuff people do that artificial grass will be leaching microplastics into the soil.

I think the point is that until it gets banned then some people are always going to use it, but the more people can be educated about the damage it does hopefully more people considering it will decide against it (like OP.) That's got to be a good thing.

No one seems to want to admit that everyone does things that upset the environment. Apparently its all down to fake grass alone.

Thankyou and yes, definitely good that you're passionate and sharing the problems with it.

Yes that’s what folks are saying, Confused

of course everyone does stuff bad for the environment, of course we all know this now and try to limit it where possible , we still need to heat our homes, commute to work etc. but we can reduce our plastic usage, reduce our waste, recycle where feasible, take environmentally friendly options where feasible and affordable and , not cover our gardens in plastic grass.

Indeed. So i don't drive so I shall have my fake grass instead. Whilst others may drive, but have real grass. People may drink bottle water whilst I may drink tap water. Someone may have a paved/gravel drive way whilst I may have grass . It all swings in circles.
