Could this be a sunflower?

It's been growing for ages as a spindly stalk, I al most pulled it up a couple of times as thought it was a weed.

All of a sudden it has a weird looking ( and slightly sinister!) bud appearing.

Could it be a late blooming sunflower, or something else?

I agree I was probably wrong, it looks more like a sunflower than ever.
But I am invested in feeling smug if it turns out to be something else.
It looks like a common weed I can't name.
Please keep us updated! Especially about how big the flower is when it hopefully finally appears.

I will! The two pictures I have posted are a week apart.. it's taking a very long time!
