SwtPeasOnEarth · 06/12/2021 18:28

@Robin233
Can't wait to see your gigantic allium in the spring! Do they smell of garlic?

@beautyisfoundwithin
I just went back and looked at your snowy garden..how many centimetres was on top of that birdhouse!?

beautyisfoundwithin · 07/12/2021 16:04

Hinterglemm is about an hour and a half away from me @applecatchers36 so not too far away, the scenery there is very similar to where I am. I live in a town called Berchtesgaden, but my house is up on the side of a mountain so we get quite a bit more snow than down in the town. I'm jealous that you still have some lovely flowers in your garden in December!

Thanks for sharing your Covid blooms @SwtPeasOnEarth. I don't think my snow was storm Arwen, just the normal but a bit early. You spotted the birdhouse! Yes, it was piled up high for sure! It's actually quite a tall one too but you can't tell as the legs are half buried in the snow on the ground! I took another close up photo later that same evening to show how piled high the roof was but then I had to move the birdhouse up onto the terrace out of the snow so it doesn't get damaged from the weight.

I took a photo of a friend's trees this afternoon, they're huge and look very Christmassy all covered in snow 🌲Xmas Smile

Hahahalol! @beautyisfoundwithin...your poor little bird house was holding about as much snow as it possibly could..several more inches than the first photo...glad you were able to rescue it in time.
Thank you for the absolutely gorgeous Christmas trees photo! Your neighbour doesn't even need to add any decorationsXmas Smile

Robin233 · 07/12/2021 18:43

@SwtPeasOnEarth
Allium don't usually smell of garlic. Though the foliage can smell of onion if crushed.
I didn't realise the white allium were 'tall' ones. They can grow to 2 meter. My neighbour will love it. Last year I got my clematis to go over the wall into her garden and she got a late bloom in October.

SwtPeasOnEarth · 08/12/2021 00:04

@Robin233
Your neighbour is going to be very surprised when she sees the allium peeping over the wall😂

We have an allium that I believe goes by the common name of society garlic...it has delicate purple lavender flowers, but if you touch the stalks your hands stink of strong garlic for days...well, maybe hours...Xmas Grin
Actually, you can smell the plant even by just getting near it.Xmas Confused

SwtPeasOnEarth · 08/12/2021 00:10

@Robin233 oops, nevermind about the society garlic being an allium...I just googled it and it's in the amaryllis family...that was a surprise...it still stinksXmas Grin

Robin233 · 08/12/2021 07:51

@SwtPeasOnEarth
Ha ha I'll look out for this.
Incidentally I have actually l
Planted a garlic clove. Bit of an experiment really - I'd read it somewhere. So I'll see what comes up as I can't really remember which plant it's buried under.

Santapankitoo · 08/12/2021 16:27

No vampires in your gardens then !

SwtPeasOnEarth · 08/12/2021 16:31

@Santakipankitoo ...Hahahalol, I guess I shan't be having any vampires either with my stinky society garlic...too bad it hasnt worked on those squirrels Xmas HmmXmas Grin

Robin233 · 08/12/2021 19:21

No vampires but do have a couple of bats 🦇.

Santapankitoo · 08/12/2021 20:21

Lovely @Robin233.

SwtPeasOnEarth · 09/12/2021 13:44

@Robin233
Your planter plants look so healthy...they must be really enjoying the cool, frosty weather...are they special plants that are going through the menopause?Xmas Grin

Robin233 · 09/12/2021 14:22

@SwtPeasOnEarth
Ha ha
They are looking surprisingly good.
I have another green and purple Heuchera which I bought at the same time. Both planted IN the garden at the back ( 1 week later ) in an good growing area, sun and against a wall south west facing.
Not looking nearly as good.
Maybe be ok in another week.
Ps. Under the cyclamen in the front pots are several bulbs, including snowdrops and grape hyacinths.

Santapankitoo · 09/12/2021 21:16

Sounds good @Robin233

applecatchers36 · 09/12/2021 22:37

Robin those Heuchera in the planters are stunning especially the red leafed one

beautyisfoundwithin · 10/12/2021 17:43

Love the message from my birdhouse @SwtPeasOnEarth 🤣🤣

Planters look great @Robin233!

I've planted some Allium bulbs for the first time this year, thanks to the photos @Santapankitoo shared of hers in the summer. Speaking of giant ones, I saw some in Lidl a few months back that were HUGE. Easily the biggest bulbs I have ever seen. They were the size of a swede, I couldn't believe my eyes. I keep thinking I should have bought them just to see what they would produce, but I didn't know where to plant them!

Attached are a couple of photos I took at work today ☃️

beautyisfoundwithin · 10/12/2021 17:49

Oh also - quick question! I bought quite a few bulbs in a sale a few weeks back, mostly Tulips & Daffodils. I had planned locations for them all in the garden but then the snow arrived early out of the blue. There is absolutely no possibility to plant them in the garden now and all of my pots are already full. Do I have any options? I'm assuming they won't keep till next year? And by the time the snow melts (March at the earliest) I'm sure it will be way too late to plant them. Do I have to magic some pots from somewhere or else throw them away??

SwtPeasOnEarth · 11/12/2021 05:01

@beautyisfoundwithin
I just saw some tulip and allium bulbs in Lidl this very afternoon..what a coincidence.!.I was so tempted to buy them, but I didn't have a trolley and my hands were full of Christmas biscuits, etc and I'd run out of extremities to hold them...I may just have to return as it seems they were meant to be planted with your mention of them.Xmas Grin
Speaking of unplanted bulbs...I Googled it and it seems like a bit of an inconvenience to try to keep them...you need to put them in moist peat moss in a box with enough room for airflow and store in a cool ,dark 50-60° F area making sure to squirt them with water regularly to keep them from
drying out and then plant when the ground thaws in the spring. It might be a fun experiment, though, for some Fall colour.

Those snow photos are gorgeous. At first, I thought you had run off to a white sand beach somewhere ( see attached photos my DH just sent me of the white sand at the beach in the Gulf of Mexico) then I saw the white on the trees and realised it was snow. Xmas Blush
