New garden - help me work out what's in here! (with pics)

Just moved house, garden a bit of a mess but west facing and sunny with lots of potential. Nice sunny south bed running along one side with a mix of shrubs, a few (heavily pruned) trees and a load of ground cover which is probably a mix of emerging perennial shoots and weeds.

I've gone round today trying to work out what's in the bed (lots of roses, an enormous rosemary, some old lavender, daffodils, pulmonarias, some box) but there a few I can't ID!

Can any of you wise MNers help? What have I got? I want to get weeding but am scared I'll accidentally chuck something lovely on the compost heap!

Hi
Lucky you, your garden sounds lovely.
I think the first pic is of Hypericum, which has bright yellow flowers and isnt the most glam but its hard to tell on my screen.
Second pic is Quince, Chaenomeles
www.crocus.co.uk/plants/_/chaenomeles-speciosa-nivalis/classid.776/
And the last looks like emerging woody Geraniums.

  1. Deutzia
  2. could be a chaenomeles/quince
  3. dunno
MunsteadWood · 11/03/2020 16:44

Thank you! Yes @trickyex I wondered about geraniums...

There are loads of them so I'm thinking of carefully digging them up and dotting them along the bed so they spread...

Third pic is geraniums. The spiky red tinged leaves. Rest of third pic is weeds.

LadyZinnia · 11/03/2020 16:47

I think the first is Hypericum too. Looks exactly like my next door neighbours. Bright yellow flowers followed by lovely berries in the Autumn

trickyex · 11/03/2020 16:48

I think looking at the leaves which are out they might be these
www.crocus.co.uk/search/_/search.Geranium-macrorrhizum/sort.0/
I would wait and see a bit if I were you, if I am right then these spread quickly and arent the nicest geraniums, they flower only once, very early and the foliage isnt the nicest smelling.
Most other geraniums arent anywhere near in leaf yet, its too early,.

MunsteadWood · 11/03/2020 16:48

Excellent @DobbyTheHouseElk I'll get digging!

I'm actually now thinking the darker green spikey leaved one in the middle of the third pic might be some kind of wallflower as I've found a few more further up the bed (yellow flowers).

And I agree that looks very much like a baby Wallflower in pic 3

MunsteadWood · 11/03/2020 16:52

There are two the hypericum type plant. Interesting if they are geranium macrorrizhum - had some of those in my old garden and they spread like anything! I actually quite liked the smell though, and although they looked a bit 'rustic' they were always covered in bees Smile Will perhaps hold off spreading them around though just in case! The ones at my old house were prolific!

Hadn't thought of quince! There are 3 of them - quite mature looking trees which have been cut right back - lovely blossom

DobbyTheHouseElk · 11/03/2020 16:53

Middle of third is a wallflower. But I class them as weeds.

MunsteadWood · 11/03/2020 16:55

Any ideas on the second set of pics?

OP posts:
steppemum · 11/03/2020 16:59

second ones haven't appeared here?

DobbyTheHouseElk · 11/03/2020 17:00

The second could be a Damson tree.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 11/03/2020 17:01

Oh I thought you meant pic 2. No more pics showing.

trickyex · 11/03/2020 17:06

Ah yes the blossoms do look like Plum blossom with the long anthers, esp if they are trees, Chaenomeles are shrubs not trees, even if old. Cant see any other pics.

longtompot · 11/03/2020 17:09

Third pic looks like my emerging peonies. First is hypericum, second is quince.

MunsteadWood · 11/03/2020 17:15

Oh weird about the second set of pics - they show up on mine. Trying again... hope this works!

Left on last post looks like iris or maybe day lilies.

MunsteadWood · 11/03/2020 17:20

Two more. First one presumably a weed? The second one looks like daffodil stalks / leaves to me but weirdly no flowers - so could they be something else?
