They're lining Adam Frost up to replace Monty, aren't they?.....

HeddaGarbled · 03/05/2019 21:16

Yup, exactly what I thought.

TorchesTorches · 03/05/2019 21:17

Yes. I like Frances though. Can't she be the one?

FunkyBarnYardBroom · 03/05/2019 21:20

Nooooooooo

Disfordarkchocolate · 03/05/2019 21:21

I hope not (because I love Monty), but I do like Adam Frost.

Barbarafromblackpool · 03/05/2019 21:22

Is it not just because Monty is away?

everywhichway · 03/05/2019 21:25

He was away making a new series in the US for a couple of weeks when tonight's episode of GW was filmed.

mrsmuddlepies · 03/05/2019 21:26

Love Monty and love his garden and his dogs. When he eventually leaves, I think they need a young gardener, somebody different. Not Adam, he tries too hard and is awkward on screen.

ThomasHardyPerennial · 03/05/2019 21:56

I really enjoyed Adam presenting the show (his house and garden are flipping gorgeous). Wish it could be done on rotation so we get more variety.

ppeatfruit · 04/05/2019 11:22

They tried to get Toby Buckland as presenter before and too many people moaned because they want Monty to continue and the beeb gave in , but Monty isn't getting any younger,. I don't know why they don't 'job share"

Maybe Joe Swift could do it he seems ok but there's a big article with him promoting plastic grass in The Radio Times which has really peed me off. He might as well present an interiors programme if he's going to push bloody plastic grass

canveyisland · 04/05/2019 13:28

AF has built a new garden at Barnack which has a nice setting and was a plant centre once, as I remember. Seems a good location for weekly broadcasts.....not bought with that in mind, surely?

He has dogs too Grin

Iggly · 04/05/2019 13:30

Adam is only annoying because of his accent. But apart from that he’s actually very good IMO.

I’m not a diehard GW Monty fan though.

lavenderhidcote · 04/05/2019 13:31

Ssshhh, don't mention plastic grass - it should be banned from being talked about in the gardening section! (can see you hate it as well).

As far as Adam Frost goes, I agree he is the probably the main presenter in waiting to Monty. I am not keen on his presenting style, agree it's awkward, but he has improved I think from when he first started. Let's face it Monty is going to be such a hard act to follow but think a format with bigger slots from others like Frances and Nick Bailey and then just an intro/end section from Adam would work better.

prettybird · 04/05/2019 13:38

We get Chris Beardshaw doing "guest" presenting slots on Beechgrove Garden in Scotland - he's pretty good too. Haven't watched this week's Gardening World yet though - only just watched last week's.

Miljah · 04/05/2019 14:18

Chris Beardshaw is okay. I do hope they don't stray too far into 'instant garden makeover' territory, as well. There are plenty of shows that do that.

I'd prefer GW to remain a bit more 'purists'.

My now gone mother could never watch Monty without saying 'He's not as good as Geoff!' (Hamilton), to which I'd retort, 'Now Percy (Thrower), there was a real gardener!' just to wind her up! Grin

OP posts:
Miljah · 04/05/2019 14:23

I also agree Joe Swift went a bit too 'Alan Titchmarsh', thus promoting plastic grass doesn't surprise me.

I don't want to come across as 'snobby' about gardening, but GW at least retains a feeling of a garden being a slowly developing, evolving thing, not a 'garden-in-a-day' makeover thing, though I can Hmm at Monty wheeling in 7 or 8 £15 apiece shop bought plants in pots from time to time!

OP posts:
ThomasHardyPerennial · 04/05/2019 14:33

I don't find Monty that engaging, to be honest (blasphemy I know!).

prettybird · 04/05/2019 14:41

If you want a bit of variety on gardening shows - and one that also takes a long term perspective rather than "instant" gardening (although they do do the occasional "problem corner" makeover), have a look at Beechgrove. Those of you outside of Scotland should be able to find it on iPlayer. Jim McColl, who had been on it since it started in 1978 only retired from the show 2 weeks ago! Shock

If it can grow in Aberdeen, it can grow anywhere! Grin

DobbyTheHouseElk · 04/05/2019 14:44

Longmeadow confuses me, I’d love to see a garden plan /map of where all the different areas are, it looks so tranquil and abundant.

HildaTablet · 04/05/2019 15:56

I'm not massively keen on Adam Frost but I'm green with envy over his huge beautiful house and garden and would love to know how much it cost

Iirc they got rid of Toby Buckland because they made the terrible mistake of dumbing GW down so much and it was awful. Bit unfair to TB actually because he's a good gardener, but the programme became so embarrassingly simplistic and people with even a bit of gardening knowledge stopped watching in exasperation. I know I gave up on it for quite a while.

It must be tricky but you do have to strike a balance between catering for total novices and grizzled old types like me Grin

RedSheep73 · 04/05/2019 16:03

I definitely thought they were trying him out as a Monty successor - lovely big garden, photogenic animals, the works. I thought he did a great job too. And, it's great to have someone on telly with a London accent!

ppeatfruit · 04/05/2019 16:17

I've recorded yesterday's I'll let you know what I think Grin If I remember correctly MD said that when televising a garden it means concentrating on one area , cleaning , deweeding etc. etc. so not giving enough time to the rest unless you employ help of course.

I think my favourite gardener is\was Geoff Hamilton Sad I really like the environmental campaigning he did.

howwudufeel · 04/05/2019 16:22

I hope they don’t use Chris Beardshaw. He takes himself far too seriously.

TheSpottedZebra · 04/05/2019 16:26

Didn't Adam Frost work under Geoff hamillton? So he has that continuity, as well as obviously being well trained and knowledgeable. I like him, he knows his stuff and is passionate. I have no issues with his accent - surely we can cope with non middle class accents now?

allnewredfairy · 04/05/2019 16:26

I would miss Monty's poetic style of presenting and I love his descriptions of what is happening in the garden. I like Adam Frost. He has the credentials and lovely garden the making. However, one cat will not cut the mustard with me and I urge him to get a dachshund.

TheSpottedZebra · 04/05/2019 16:31

Tom is a senior cat and must not be dismissed so harshly.
Also, I don't see him with a dachshund - he'd suit a terrier better.
Although I'm watching it right now and he has black lab called Isla. See -the pressure on him to be more middle class? Sad
