out all day, in at night, then put in growbags outside all the time .Just so it isn't a sudden shock out in the cold!

Thanks

Sorry i havn't read whole thread, so apologies if sanyone's passed on this tip already - read it in Carol Klein's newspaper colum. She suggests having two growbags, one on top of the other and with corresponding holes for the roots in the bottom of the top bag and top of bottom bag. This gives the toms a greater root run, and they retain moisture better so soil is less likely to dry out. I'm going to give it a go this year.

MrsWho · 21/05/2007 20:02

I was weighing up that idea but have already planted mine out which would make at least a 2 person job!

A link with a blow-by-blow of how to grow tomatoes:

www.gardenaction.co.uk

Type in 'tomato' in the search box, then select the first link which is the one with '35 pictures'. Looks useful to me and might help other complete newbies like me!

WAAAAHHH! Mine have got bloody blight, both lots greenhouse and outdoor!! Embareesingly so have the plants I gave to my friend who was so excited about finally having a greenhouse. It must have come from my greenhouse had it two years ago, scrubbed it but didn't grow any toms in it last year.

Feckity feck and great big ARSE!! Have sprayed today with Copper stuff which naursery guy said was ok for an organic garden. AND the fecking Blardy rabbits got in last night (someone left gate open) and they have nibbled through the bottoms of all my runner beans, they had just reached the tops of the canes. I need a gun!!

It is heartbreaking when I have worked so hard and fitted it all in around the kids.

MrsWho · 02/06/2007 22:28

MIne are doing weel, the tumbling ones seem to haev doubled in size whilst i was away

thefuturesbright · 03/06/2007 21:08

BLIGHT in may? you poor thing!

MegaLegs · 04/06/2007 10:14

I sprayed them with copper sulphate mix and I seem to have saved them. When we had blight before the plants died literally overnight but this time the brown patches haven't spread any more - hope they are ok.

My runner beans are just a row of twiggy stumps blardy rabbits - the boys forget to shut the gate and they sneak in.

MrsWho · 28/06/2007 20:31

So how is everyone doing?

My tumbling ones are covered in flowers and tiny toms but the rest aren't doing that well

mine are not doing anything much, some flowers but no fruit. i had blight too but as soon as it stopped raining they recovered, hope it doesn't come back.

yellowbean · 28/06/2007 21:21

i've got yellow toms growing... plants look great, their outdoors.. lots of flowers on, but flowers are dropping off before a tomato has formed why???

thefuturesbright · 29/06/2007 22:02

I ate my first Sungold this evening. Two, straight off the plant, MMMMMMM

thefuturesbright · 29/06/2007 22:04

Yellowbean, plants don't recover from Blight - they get it and melt. It might have been a different fungal infection, glad they have recovered

thefuturesbright · 29/06/2007 22:05

Sorry yellowbean - i am going nuts (too many glasses of wine) - better switch to Chat!

Hi everyone, not had time to read all messages but wanted to ask a question as this is the first time I've grown tomatoes..........

I went on holiday for 2 weeks and believe it rain, rain, rained the whole time we were gone. Anyway, I was happily surprised at how big my tomatoes were when I got back. All 3 tomato plants have fruit and loads more yellow flowers had appeared so I've tapped them and some have started showing tiny fruit. Anyway.........the big tomatoes are almost the size of the ones we'd buy from the shops. When should I expect them to turn red? They are all still green atm.

TIA
