Not too late - fine until early April I think.

kiskidee · 27/03/2007 13:02

i have got a few seedlings going.

7 of the tumbling variety and an indeterminate numbers of the bush variety. they are still coming through but hoping for about a dozen.

i started them off for the gardening club at school but will adopt a couple and take them home.

cece · 27/03/2007 17:33

Yeah we have germination of toms. No sign of my peppers doing anything though!

nikkie · 27/03/2007 17:49

All mine are up, on their 1st set of proper leaves and doing well on the bathroom window - tiger, san mar?, red pear, ildi and a couple of others. It was a mixed pack of outdoor varieties I bought last year.

I have about 20 seedlings in total but only have enough space for 6 plants absolute max. Shall I throw out some seedlings now or wait until they are a bit bigger? The longer I leave it the harder it is to part with them...

fruittea · 28/03/2007 11:32

Can I join in?!

Like Dozeynoo, mine have just developed their first set of real leaves, after I potted them up on the weekend into larger plugs. Will have to pot them again before they're ready to put in the greenhouse.

Just Gardener's Delight here - did an experiment with several varieties a couple of years ago and vowed never to deviate again as they were so much more reliable and heavy, constant croppers.

Must remember to get 2 panes to replace the ones we lost in the wind 2 weeks ago...

Dozeynoo, how about selling them on eBay?! That's where I got last year's plants as I was too late to germinate my own.

sophiewd · 28/03/2007 11:40

Can't grow tomatoes. The dog eats them of the plant.

thethirdwiseeasterbunny · 30/03/2007 16:53

Planted some gardeners delight last weekend. I tried to grow some beef tomatoes last year, my plant managed two and they split, they were huge and tasteless (sure there's a joke in there somewhere ).
Anyone any recommendations for plum tomatoes?

nikkie · 30/03/2007 17:17

No idea, I just shove 'em in a pot , add water and food

Ahhh!

Potted some on today and forgot to label them asap and ended up mixing some up so will just have to be a surprise!

two seedlings have popped up! i was beginning to despair, planted them a month ago.

gardeners world said san marzano (sp?) good plums. i have a coupel of v old seeds in but haven't germinated yet.

MrsWho · 02/04/2007 22:24

Friend gave my some tumbling toms today and thats my collection of plants sorted, just waiting for them to grown now!

fruittea · 07/04/2007 16:24

Mine are looking great now - two sets of leaves, and about 4" high. Will need to pot them on again soon - they're in the bigger sized plugs, must find some pots.

I have 13, which will be too many for my greenhouse. Will have to find a good home for some of them!

MrsWho · 07/04/2007 20:41

I have kept 40 so far and 8 tubling ones, have another 40 to take to work when i go back!

MrsWho · 07/04/2007 20:41

Tumbling obviously! [bluah]

MrsWho · 07/04/2007 20:42

even

Dozeynoo · 07/04/2007 23:28

A couple of years ago I was converted to using those spiral metal rods instead of canes and string for staking up my tom. plants. You just poke the tom plant up the middle of the spiral as it grows.

...obviously not so good for tumbling tom of hanging baskets .

I think I got a cheap triple pack from B&Q.

fruittea · 08/04/2007 09:33

They sound good. Spend ages stringing up canes in the greenhouse. Must check those out..

MrsWho · 08/04/2007 13:24

Thats a good idea!
I use those platic twisty things from toy packets to fasten the plants up-neater than string and you can the reuse them! Now I have my trellis I will be trying to fasten the toms to it

MrsWho · 27/04/2007 20:58

How is everyones growing?
I have 46 atm am giving them away to everyone!

looneytune · 28/04/2007 14:31

Thanks for the link MrsWho.

I've never grown any veg so this is my first time. I was given 3 lovely tomato plants from someone on Freecycle but not sure what sort they are? They are currently in plastic cups and I think need to be transferred soon. They are currently about 17" tall.

So, give me any tips as I'm a newbie. I've been told not to move to growbags until the first tomato comes through - is that correct? Should I repot now? How long is it likely to be until I see my first tomato? This is so exciting!!

MrsWho · 28/04/2007 16:19

I have never waited til the toms start as they can be quite big plants by then.
Repot now into a bigger pot and then to a grow bag in a coupleof weeks. My toms last year started being ready at the end of June.

iota · 28/04/2007 16:24

how did I miss this thread

my toms are ready for potting on at the mo - we only planted the seeds just after Easter

and we have branched out into cucumbers as well this yr

MrsWho · 29/04/2007 11:54

Have just been reading about toms and it doesn't say to wait for fruit to put in a grow bag, just when they are big enough

Dozeynoo · 30/04/2007 21:23

Still got all 12 tom plants - I know the instant I give half of them away the remaining 6 will keel over and then I'll have none.
Not sure what to grow them in this year. Was going to go for pots instead of grow bags this year but think that my take up more space than I've got available. Has anyone done ring cultures before? Does it give any better results than just grow bags?
