It's growing in our garden and we've no idea what it is. Don't even know if it's a weed or actually a plant! Seems it's about to flower. It's quite large really,

Poppy possibly?

Bluntness100 · 27/05/2017 16:38

I wondered that too, thank you, I think the flowers are red if I recall from last year, but the leaves made me think otherwise,,it's about two foot high and has several buds on it, but last year I think only one flower on it and much much smaller.

poppy - big blowsy things that will spread from lots of seeds in the seedhead
I like them in a cottage garden.

Bluntness100 · 27/05/2017 16:51

they are in a little square bed next to the house where I have wisteria. Last year it was small and didn't take my notice, but this year it's quite big. I underestimated it's actually over three foot. But also there is about four little ones growing as well, which weren't there last year. I guess conditions must have been better this year and the previous owners planted it and its seeded elsewhere. Weird place for it though,,,

Papaver somniferum. The Opium poppy Grin Wink

Wallywobbles · 27/05/2017 18:26

Poppy. We have 1000s.

aircooled · 27/05/2017 20:02

That's a very healthy P. somniferum! Do let us know what colour the flowers are - could be anything from muddy mauve through pink, red to `black'. And they could be single flowers or double or full, fluffy pompom type ones. I love the anticipation. Simple things...

Bluntness100 · 28/05/2017 06:04

I will do and thanks. It's got quite a few pods on it. I think I recall a red flower from last year, but it was small so not something I really noticed, we are both really surprised at it this year, as it's really quite big and we kept having the conversation of "what is that?" Confused

I have this same plant - mine is also huge! Our first year in the house and I'm really excited to see what the flowers are like.

Bluntness100 · 31/05/2017 07:07

Well the first flower came out during the night. Pleasant surprise this morning!

just remember that cultivation of Papaver somniferum is legal in the UK - the harvesting and processing of it for the production of drugs, legal or otherwise, is not!

Avii86 · 31/05/2017 07:29

Oh - how beautiful! I've got about 20 buds so it'll be wonderful if mine look like yours

kingjofferyworksintescos · 31/05/2017 07:41

Poppy , its about to flower

Archfarchnad · 31/05/2017 08:25

That's interesting, I failed. So does that mean you couldn't harvest the seeds for e.g. Baking?
I read the other day that Angela Rippon did a. Drugs test after eating poppy seed bread and failed!

Ifailed · 31/05/2017 08:48

you can use the seeds for baking, can't see why not as you can buy them for the same reason.
It's only illegal if you start harvesting the milky sap, which is where most of the drugs are.

Bluntness100 · 31/05/2017 21:38

How do you get the seeds, are they in the pods before they flower, sorry silly question,,just I have a wooded part of the garden and was thinking it might be nice if they grew there,,,

wobblywonderwoman · 31/05/2017 21:50

That looks beautiful and will be really pretty once all the flowers come out... May have to invest!!

Bluntness100 · 16/06/2017 20:19

Those are the SEED PODS, surely, and it has already flowered? I don't know if it should be dead headed, to conserve energy. Or let a few pods ripen, and collect seed to see what colour 'offspring' may be; could all be red still, of course.

MattBerrysHair · 16/06/2017 20:58

It's an annual so doesn't need dead-heading.

thatorchidmoment · 16/06/2017 21:00

Those are the seed pods, once the petals have fallen off. Let them stay for a bit until they rattle, then you can pick them off and shake out the seeds from the heads. They can be planted for next year!

Bluntness100 · 16/06/2017 21:01

Ah ok. That makes sense! Thanks 🤗 Could I use the seed pods, as in burst them open and sprinkle elsewhere? I've a wooded part of the garden and they would be nice there..,
