Volunteering sounds like a great idea. We are not in London or near any exciting museums but what you described @Ventress about the the bayeux tapestry sounded amazing. I went to see it in France with my family when I was a teenager and thought it was dreadfully boring but DC is massively into this time period and is hoping to get a ticket to see it in London and I think with age I would now appreciate it more!

DC has now got a job tennis coaching which works quite well as he's away quite a bit over the summer and as it's proving hard getting a regular retail/pub job so far. @ComingInByAnsible and everyone - hope they find something good soon.

Hope all the proms and end of school events are fun. DC has a few more social events and sport at school this week before his leavers ball and then no more school - ever!

@Echobelly where has your DC gone? Tried looking back on the posts but couldn't see it. Hope it's a great holiday even without seeing the mountains!

Echobelly · 21/06/2026 23:08

@Fabfabfab - Slovakia. My parents have a house out there. It's a bit tricky to get about without a car but DC said they might just hang about the town and chill out, though they have made it out to a nearby castle

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 22/06/2026 07:50

Morning all and welcome to @CatkinToadflax

DS is exhausted after basically being non stop partying since finishing his exams, even at a party last night! I’m hoping he chills for a couple of days before heading off on his holiday at the end of the week.

He has a zero hours contract job which has been useful during the exam period, he now has some work lined up for July but not a lot, I’m hoping he’ll pick up some more shifts so he actually has some money in his account before he goes to uni!

I hope the heat this week isn’t too much for everyone, I’m genuinely dreading the super high temperatures and humidity. 😫

Echobelly · 22/06/2026 09:25

I'm a bit 😱about the weather too, but turn at least it will prepare me as DH and I are going on a weekend away to Mostar in Bosnia on Saturday and it's going to be at least 37C every day. Fine for DH who is totally happy in those temperatures,, less so for me. Planning to spend lots of time swimming in rivers and lakes!

Fabfabfab · 22/06/2026 11:16

Swimming in lakes and rivers sounds amazing. I'm sat in front of a fan at full blast and still feeling too hot...

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 22/06/2026 11:45

We're going away too @Echobelly - I'm looking forward to the aircon!! 😂

gingercat02 · 22/06/2026 11:50

You all need to move to the north east. It's grey and 17°C here.

Sounds divine!

Apparently it’s only 28 degrees here but I’m struggling to get through the housework! It’s no hotter where DS is on his lads trip!

on the plus side, the laundry baskets are all empty!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 22/06/2026 12:35

26 here but Met office app says 34 tomorrow. 😖

newmum1976 · 22/06/2026 14:13

40 here on Wednesday!

So jealous - it's over 30 here in Surrey....So pleased DC isn't still doing exams. Is everyone finished now including FM?

It's funny I want some heat, we're never happy

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 23/06/2026 08:02

I would be happy at a lovely 24 degrees, sunny with a light breeze, is that too much to ask from the weather gods?? 😭. All we get is cold and rain or scorched earth. Did you all have thunder storms last night? I barely got a wink of sleep.

Me too, lovely summer weather, sadly global warming is all about extremes.
No thunderstorms here.

SilverBlue4 · 23/06/2026 09:21

My son was kept on the tarmac / back in the terminal at Geneva for five hours last night as the storm closed Bristol airport long after it had passed, as it broke the ground radar!

He flew home to Cardiff at midnight but about two minutes before the end of the flight they said Bristol was ok again so they turned in the channel and came back! Tired day today!

What a night - apocalyptic thunderstorm, and my lovely DS (14) out there in a tent on his D of E expedition. We have had reassuring messages today that the boys are all fine and in good spirits, but they are reducing their hike today (and starting out earlier) due to the hot conditions forecast.

Hope you have all got plenty of iced drinks to hand!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 23/06/2026 11:41

Blimey, I didn't realise it was bad enough to close airports @SilverBlue4 😦
Glad your DS is home safe.

Also glad your DS is safe @HighburyHope I would NOT want to be in a tent in that storm!

I've just been for a haircut, my poor hairdresser has a fully booked week as she was off last week. Imagine having a hair drier going all day over the next few days, poor thing!!

Lalux · 23/06/2026 13:21

@SilverBlue4glad he got home safely. @HighburyHopewhat a night. We didn’t have a storm but did have quite a lot of rain.

DS has his prom today - they are going to melt in their suits but at least the venue will have Aircon.

HighburyHope · 23/06/2026 14:55

Yes @Lalux - it’s DD’s prom tonight too. Fortunately no suits needed for the girls!

Wehaditsogood · 23/06/2026 14:58

@Ventress Glad your DF is better.
Thank you for drawing our attention to the British Bayeux Tapestry. I am into stitching and went to see the one in Bayeux as an adult (and going to London as well). Now I have another museum to visit on my rather long list 😀

@gingercat02 We are in the North East as well, but we had to crank up the work aircon full blast yesterday. I am just dying today. I am Hungarian and should cope better.

@Echobelly I love Slovakia. My ancestors are Slovaks / mix of all Central and Eastern Europeans and we went on holiday to the mountains with DH. We ordered randomly from the menu and it was my DGM's secret recipe 😃 ❤️

CatkinToadflax · 23/06/2026 15:28

Hope those having proms this evening have a wonderful time! DS’s is on Saturday. He’s in full concert blacks today though as he’s performing with his school chamber choir and other choirs for the last time this evening. It’s likely to be emotional and sticky!

Wehaditsogood · 23/06/2026 15:37

Our school has just sent us an email that prom is full black tie. Why?! Why can't they relax it a bit?!

MiniMidiMaxi · 23/06/2026 15:43

Hope all the prom-goers have a great time tonight!

Just working through all the last minute shopping and list of things to do before we go on our family holiday at the end of the week. We are also going to a thing for the parents of offer-holders at DS's prospective DA employer this week, hoping they have air conditioning! It will be good to hear more about the set-up. I appreciate them trying to include parents, I guess they are trying to match the uni experience alternative.

Katymaus · 23/06/2026 16:40

So amazing that everyone's dc are finished now! Congratulations to the Further Maths finishers yesterday.

DD was really upset to leave school but has been seeing friends and taking up hobbies again, looking forward to leavers' do in early July and then two weeks away - I thought she would struggle with leaving school for weeks but realising she can do all the things she's not been able to fit in for months has transformed how she's feeling about going forward to new things. Feeling very proud of her!

No thunderstorms here but DH came through them on his way back via Bristol. Very hot though, and even hotter tomorrow. I'm another one who would like a max temp of 24, sunny and a breeze... And properly cold winter to follow!

They've made it to Kosice, in the end they mostly hung our near the house and had a lovely time doing it, it seems
