@hels71 Can I ask what scenic arts is please? In my head it’s like stage sets and design.

It is making sets and props. Someone else designs them. She is very excited!!! They learn welding, carpentry, sculpting, upholstery, and many other things.

pinkdelight · 20/05/2026 10:23

Nice spreadsheet! Good idea that, thank you. No problems using it on laptop. Thanks for the new thread too.

Hope everyone's DC's exams go well today. Only one this week for DS - tomorrow he's doing the extra FM module he taught himself on Modelling with Algorithms. He's the only one sitting it at his school and I'm paranoid they'll have forgotten or not got the room booked or the right papers. But otherwise it's low stakes as the other modules make up the A-level so it's just a nice bonus if he does better on this than on Mechanics. It's all way beyond (innumerate) me!

Scenic arts sounds fab @hels71 and Rose Bruford is a great place to spend three years being creative. No wonder she's excited.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 20/05/2026 11:12

@hels71 Wow that sounds so interesting! I did a bit of upholstery when DS was doing his GCSEs it is hard and takes a lot of knowledge if you are upholstering older furniture. I'm quite jealous!

I was seriously thinking about moving to set design after my architecture degree but then decided to continue with architecture.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 20/05/2026 16:13

DS is back and seems very happy with Physics Paper 1. He's going over to his friends shortly for a couple of hours and seems very chill - thank the lord!

MamOfTwo · 20/05/2026 16:17

DD said AQA history went better than expected. It was Tudors for her and let's just say she is very glad to see the back of them!

MiniMidiMaxi · 20/05/2026 16:24

DS not very happy with Physics here (AQA) - he is maybe still affected by not feeling well but others at his school also found it hard. Ah well, still two more to go. FM tomorrow.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 20/05/2026 16:37

@MiniMidiMaxi we are Edexcel for all DS's subjects. If everyone found it hard then hopefully that's repeated across the country and boundaries are a bit more forgiving.

Good news for your DD @MamOfTwo , always good to get the worst ones out of the way.

Ventress · 20/05/2026 16:53

Very glad physics was okay @JustHereWithMyPopcorn. Hopefully the boundaries will be low for AQA if everyone found it difficult @MiniMidiMaxi

Also very glad history tudors was good @MamOfTwo. DS did history tudors yesterday but he’s OCR rather than AQA. Said it was “hard but good” and really enjoyed the two 25 markers he did (think it’s different for AQA).

SilverBlue4 · 20/05/2026 16:58

Mine is happy with physics today but is historically not very reliable about knowing whether things went well or not! But he finished it and didn't have to guess anything, he says. Relieved to have one out of the way.

What board did he sit @SilverBlue4 ?

gingercat02 · 20/05/2026 17:48

Added DS to the spreadsheet. Human geography tomorrow afternoon and he's done until the 2nd. Having a well deserved day off on Friday and it looks like it maybe sunny 🌞

Newlease · 20/05/2026 18:00

DD had physics and was very hard, she thinks it’s only her school, probably read on SM that
it was easy! Edexcel it is. And we have FM tmrw. Physics is her fav subject too.
hope everything goes well @wonderstuff.You are allowed to take a breather, whenever it gets tough!
not booked vaccine yet, but will look into boots.
I will update spreadsheet when I go on laptop, thanks so much for the idea. And new thread!

Glittertwins · 20/05/2026 18:28

OCR physics paper one here today, came back a bit dejected.

wonderstuff · 20/05/2026 18:42

Psychology today not too bad, happy to never do bio psych again. Nothing until after half term. My biopsy was clear, so that’s one less worry and hospital think DFIL will make it back home, not sure when though. I’m more anxious about GCSEs than DS, who is telling me everything is going well, but I think would say that even if it wasn’t, who knows. I’m so looking forward to Friday.

@hels71 that sounds like so much fun, I bet she’s excited.

Lalux · 20/05/2026 19:18

Jumping on the new thread.

@wonderstuffthat is good news on the biopsy and DFIL

I am following all the exam chat but still waiting for DS to sit his first exam which isn’t till 2nd June! Good luck to those with exams tomorrow and Friday.

bluefineliner · 20/05/2026 19:24

Hi all,

Just trying to catch up on this lovely new thread.

@wonderstuff was just about to say I hadn't seen psychology mentioned until you did! DD had paper 2 today which she was happy with. No more exams until after half term now either. Good news on the biopsy and DFIL news too.

I'm going to have a nosey at the spreadsheet now!

gingercat02 · 20/05/2026 19:30

Great news @wonderstuff, hope your FiL is continuing to improve x

SilverBlue4 · 20/05/2026 20:10

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 20/05/2026 17:00

What board did he sit @SilverBlue4 ?

AQA for us @JustHereWithMyPopcorn

Ooops! Repeating what I said on now old thread...

Oh God, since DC accepted Goldsmith's I've spoken to two friends - one who formerly worked there and another who works in London uni admin generally - and they were both really negative about its prospects, as in any course could be at risk of withdrawal, or in the very least not to expect to finish the course with it being the same place it was at the start. I worry the low offer was desperation to fill course places.... 😭I did know it wasn't stable and I did warn DC, but they were determined. I do gather that if a course is withdrawn students will get offered something similar at the same uni or somewhere else, but it would be really disappointing for them.
I'm wondering if there might be any way to bring them round to Manchester if they get the grades it asked for , and if so, if there's any way to bring Manchester round after they accepted Goldsmiths... just if we keep getting bad news, or if DH gets wind of it...

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 20/05/2026 20:47

It’s really interesting that four DCs on here are taking History (so far) and all the others are different. Is that unusual do you think? Or is History a super popular degree?

HighburyHope · 20/05/2026 20:58

@Echobelly I also have a friend who is (recent) ex-faculty at Goldsmiths and would not recommend touching it with a bargepole for the reasons you have outlined. Obviously if their very low offer is firmed and met then the insurance place will fall away on results day and not be available (save for any clearing places). Would your DC be open to a conversation with one of your friends while there is still the possibility of going with Manchester instead?

ComingInByAnsible · 20/05/2026 21:09

@Echobelly, when did DC make their choices in UCAS? You can change your mind within 14 days, I think. Sorry to hear the insider views aren’t great.

wonderstuff · 20/05/2026 23:42

@Echobelly that is a worry, I hope you work something out, always the option to pull out of ucas and hit clearing, sister in law who works in HE says increasing numbers of students aren’t applying through UCAS at all, going straight to clearing after results.

BlackBean2023 · 21/05/2026 05:34

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 20/05/2026 20:47

I think it’s a fairly popular humanities degree as it can be used to access a fair few careers that aren’t history based!
For my DD, it’s just her passion!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 21/05/2026 07:10

@BlackBean2023 yes that’s true, I know people who did history and converted to law for instance.

@Echobelly is this to do with financial issues? What a shame for your DD to have to be worrying about this now.

@wonderstuff how do you apply through clearing if you haven’t done UCAS?
