Sorry must not have been clear. If for example a course is requiring AAA, does a student with a prediction of AAA disadvantaged compared to one with 3 A*? Or is it that once the requirements are met how high the predictions are do not matter

For a course which is expected to be oversubscribed, conditional offers are likely to be made first to those with the highest predictions and working downwards. So if the uni says a standard offer for the course is AAA, then having predictions of AAA in no way guarantees an offer. Ultimately a huge amount will depend upon the level of demand compared to the number of places available.

Thanks! What about if the course requires additional exams eg higher LNAT with lower predictions or higher predictions with low LNAT. I appreciate it depends on the uni?

JessyCarr · 01/10/2025 19:19

@PinkChaires See, for example, this explanation from the University of Exeter’s website: “How we tier applications”.

JessyCarr · 01/10/2025 19:21

@PinkChaires Depends on the uni, but LNAT-requiring courses are likely to be heavily oversubscribed, so the LNAT score and grade predictions will no doubt be weighted according to each uni’s criteria and applications ranked accordingly.

this thread discusses law offers at LNAT and non LNAT universities @PinkChaires. Could be helpful?

DD’s application is in. She’s refreshing her email about every 5 mins waiting for offers!!

postitnot · 03/10/2025 19:04

Did anyone watch Martin Lewis on Tuesday night talking about student finance? It was really good, well worth a watch

DD’s application is in. She’s refreshing her email about every 5 mins waiting for offers!!

😂love this @Countrylife2002 ! Hopefully she'll hear something soon. Has she put all her choices in now so she can get offers from non oxbridge choices?

My DD did this 5 mins after submitting and we have an ongoing joke of me asking her 'any offers yet?' just to annoy her, as with choosing medicine she will be waiting until the end of time for any sniff of a response!

She did get a bit giddy at getting her acknowledgment emails from the unis, made it more real.

Ventress · 04/10/2025 08:02

Thanks @postitnot- I will find it on catch up. I was reading the thread in HE about paying for university, which led me to the MSE website. I’ve read the info on there so watching the program will be helpful.

DS’ economics teacher is very much in the Martin Lewis “take the loans regardless “ camp.

gingercat02 · 04/10/2025 08:24

On a very windy A19 enroute to Leeds open day. DS was at an 18th party last night. It's a very quiet car 🤣

GirlsInGreen · 04/10/2025 13:46

@gingercat02 is the car window open yet?😂

DD UCAS is finally sent on Friday - also doing the "any offers yet? No? I'm just so disappointedcomedy tut"
Glad thats over - awful sickness going around school & she was poorly - NEA & entrance test next on 24th - all becoming very real.

JessyCarr · 04/10/2025 19:03

DD isn’t an early applicant, but someone at her school who’s an Oxbridge candidate has a Bristol offer already for a STEM subject - not sure what exactly.

wonderstuff · 04/10/2025 19:08

Checking in. I don’t think dd has her PS completed yet. I honestly only find out about her social engagements and when she’s behind on homework, I think she finds talking about university too much a bit stressful. She has had her predicted grades upped to AAB which she is obviously really happy about. Off to Liverpool open day next weekend with her dad. Not many of her friends seem to be applying for university at all.

JessyCarr · 04/10/2025 19:09

We’re going to the Manchester open day next weekend - anyone else?

Countrylife2002 · 04/10/2025 19:36

Quite a few of DD’s classmates have offers - including from Edinburgh astoundingly !!

AuntyBulgaria · 04/10/2025 20:07

Offers seem so far away here! No decisions on exact course or uni have even been made yet.

DS off to Warwick with his Dad next sat. Then final visit is in Nov to Loughborough.

ComingInByAnsible · 05/10/2025 00:15

Exciting to read about UCAS applications being submitted and first news of offers!

No offers yet for DS, but the ginormous geography NEA has been submitted and he’s working through successive drafts of history.

Good luck to everyone waiting for offers, working on applications or doing open days!

Ventress · 05/10/2025 08:05

How did the Leeds open day go @gingercat02? Hope storm Amy wasn’t too disruptive.

Amazing that students are getting offers already. That must feel good.

Lots of time still to make decisions @AuntyBulgariaand @wonderstuff

Your daughter’s PGs are great @wonderstuff- well done to her. Perhaps the Liverpool open day will help focus her university thoughts?

Lots of DS’s friends aren’t applying for university either. One has been doing a financial course at college which had a placement at John Lewis. This has resulted in an offer for their management training scheme. He’s thrilled about this as school was never his “thing” but he’s loved this course. Just shows that they find their niche one way or another.

Lots of open days planned! I hope they go well. No more for DS as his application is finalised now although the school haven’t submitted it yet. DS says his references are still being reviewed by the school team.

He has been lucky enough to secure two mock Oxbridge interviews with past students of the school who got places for history/histpol. The school message out to their past students, send the students PS (with permission) and ask if any are willing to help with prep and mock interviews. DS is very lucky to get two offers as some students don’t get any. First session is next Friday via Teams. Exciting times.

Ventress · 05/10/2025 08:08

Great to have that geography NEA submitted @Countrylife2002! I’ve heard it’s a monster.

What subject is your son’s history NEA on? DS is doing French Revolution and is enjoying the research. He plans to write it up during half term. His English NEA is almost complete - final draft is in.

DC2 has a couple of mock Oxbridge interviews lined up as well. We were concerned she wouldn't be offered any because her subject is somewhat niche (theology and religion) and her specific areas of interest within the subject are even more so. But it goes to show that nothing is ever lost by trying.

DC1 is planning her gap year and has some screening interviews with au pair placement agencies scheduled. She's also booked in for first aid training to make herself a more attractive candidate. Does anyone else have DC planning a gap year abroad?

gingercat02 · 05/10/2025 10:47

@GirlsInGreen@Ventress
Leeds was good, no open windows required thankfully.
Nice campus, bit of a mishmash of old ,70s and new but I suppose that's normal.
DS liked it, the accommodation was fine. Business school is in a new building and a row of old terraced houses but everyone was lovely (obviously best behaviour lol)
You can take 40 credits in something completely unrelated which I liked, so a language or food science or anything that interests you. Gives a bit of individuality
Good day all in all.

HereWeAreToday · 05/10/2025 11:05

I’m going to ask a really silly question. Is everyone who is applying early because they are Oxbridge applicants?

Newlease · 05/10/2025 13:30

Ohh.. I somehow forgot about the early offers. Thanks for posting those @Countrylife2002 For some reason I am not able to tag ppl.
@JessyCarr I was planning to go Manchester after ESAT when you suggested it in July. But now DD is planning to go Bath instead.mumsnet on iPad is not easy. I thought my safari was playing up, so went on to download app on iPad ( may be I am getting too old to spend so much time scrolling on small screen) but, gave up in the end. It’s the endless ads or refresh every few seconds.. I am finding it difficult to get further down on a query that need answers.
PS is not submitted yetI don’t think, got Teacher reference last Thursday
ESAT on 9th, I have just read that I will have to go in with my ID. Anyone else like me didn’t read the small prints yet- if kids are under 18, you need to go in with them :(

Not a silly question. Can't speak for all but yes, that's why DS has applied early. Think all med applications have the early deadline too.

SilverBlue56 · 05/10/2025 14:51

My son is about ready to apply (maybe small juggle of exact courses after Bath open day) but there is no support in school for the PS draft or references until after half term, for those not doing early entry. So we will be waiting a while yet to get it all sent off.
