Noticed the current thread is almost full so thought I better start a new one for discussing results day and our DC’s plans for uni/gap years or anything else!

Thanks @Rollergirl11
Checking in so I don't lose you all though I don't really have anything to report currently!

Penguinsa · 12/07/2024 19:46

Thanks Rollergirl

IThinkIMadeItWorse · 12/07/2024 19:48

Thanks @Rollergirl11 only 34 days until results day!!

Pinkypinkyplonk · 12/07/2024 20:06

Oh my, that long!

SooperOuting · 12/07/2024 20:16

Many thanks - 34 days….eek!!!

space99 · 12/07/2024 20:34

Cheers @Rollergirl11
My DS away so much at different times over the holidays but will hopefully get some extra hours at his supermarket job on the weeks that he is home. Can’t imagine it would have been easy to get work if he didn’t already have a job as uni students are home so early these days that they must grab all the temporary summer jobs long before the A-levels finish.

Lightsabre · 12/07/2024 20:51

Thanks @Rollergirl11, also checking in.

QueenMabby · 12/07/2024 22:20

Thanks for the new thread @Rollergirl11.

ladygoingGaga · 12/07/2024 22:25

Hi, come along to join, have DS waiting for results, have no idea how he has done, as mocks were terrible predictions, seem to put a rocket up his behind for last few months but guessing it was too little too late.
So he didn’t apply for university and has no real idea on what he wants to do.

Anyone else have a vague and directionless DC?

He has got himself job at the local pub in the meantime at least.

MirandaWest · 12/07/2024 23:50

Thank you for the new thread @Rollergirl11 and welcome @ladygoingGaga 😃

DD and I went to Wimbledon yesterday which we both enjoyed very much 😊 we stayed Wednesday and Thursday nights with my sister who lives nearer than we do which was nice. I felt DD was more of an adult than I’ve felt before which was also nice.

How was your DD's prom Rollergirl?

LouisCatorze · 13/07/2024 09:34

Thanks @Rollergirl11

@ladygoingGaga DD sounds a bit like your DS. No idea how she'll have done. Predicted grades not great but she is a firm believer in not putting in the effort until it really matters (i.e. the actual A Level exams), so she could surprise us all.

She's enjoying her best life on the Greek island holiday at the moment. Good to get away from it all and reminders that Results Day is really not so far off now.

Rollergirl11 · 13/07/2024 10:59

Thanks for asking about DD’s prom @MirandaWest. It was a bit mixed tbh. It was on Tuesday and the weather was absolutely dreadful. They had pre’s at a friends house and that was really nice as there were about 50 people and assorted parents there so that was a nice send off. But DD spent much of the evening babysitting a friend who has recently split up with her boyfriend (also attending), who got really drunk, spent the night crying and generally made an embarrassment of herself. Then because it was a Tuesday night, nobody was prepared to host an after party because of parents going to work/siblings still at school and there were no clubs open. So ended up being a bit of a damp squib in the end. But I managed to get some lovely photos of all the girls looking gorgeous! 😂

Just checking in - thanks for the new thread.

DS (who is hoping to get the grades to meet his offer for Durham) has been on a UK based holiday with friends, a trip to Barcelona with us and is going to Paris with cousins in a couple of weeks. Then also has a holiday in Devon and a youth camp in Norfolk. There might also be a sailing holiday. So 5 or 6 holidays isn’t bad really. He’s also managing to fit in about 15 days of paid work in a children’s holiday childcare club he’s worked with - best thing is it’s totally flexible so fits round all the holidays. He can earn over £1k by doing that. And hopefully can get a few shifts at Christmas and Easter, as we t be working in term time.

A Levels seem a bit of a distant memory now, although occasionally he will mention ‘what if I don’t get the grades’ which I think they all wonder about fairly regularly.

It’s lovely to see the growing independence (undertaking more adventurous journeys in car) and working through the holiday planning with friends, along with voting. This sense of being on the cusp of being a grown-up is just wonderful to see. It takes me back and reminds me of what it was like tot realise you’re 18 and can decide what to do rather than having to ask and seek permission for everything. And a realisation that you’re a capable person who can work things out with a bit of effort. The world really is their oyster.

ShanghaiDiva · 13/07/2024 13:32

Thanks for the new thread. Dd is not working as she has been diagnosed with a chronic illness and can no longer work as a lifeguard. She had planned to work over the summer and didn’t want to come away with us and therefore didn’t book for her…she is now at home and we are relaxing in sunny Montenegro.
She went to London for a long weekend with friends and we will have a couple of weekends away next month.
She has been busily liaising with Bath uni re access arrangements, confirmation of disability etc. She also has some more hospital appointments. Not the summer she planned, but she is trying to stay positive.

Wronginformation · 13/07/2024 14:53

ShanghaiDiva, ah, wasn't your DD also applying for natural sciences?
DD also off to Bath. DD had some contact with Bath and she said they were quite helpful .

QueenMabby · 13/07/2024 15:30

Ah @ShanghaiDiva - what a shame for your dd. Hope she's coping ok and that Bath are on the ball with helping her.

Bath is also DS's first choice but I can't think of results day without feeling sick!

ShanghaiDiva · 13/07/2024 16:35

@Wronginformation yes, natural sciences, although prior to her last exam she thought she might change to maths….we suggested she waited until she has her results. 😖

yes, they seem pretty on the ball and will ensure accommodation is on ground floor, advising tutors that she needs extra time to get to labs etc.
results day seems so far away as her brother took the IB and results are out in the first week of July so he had three months to relax.

Yep! Well actually mine has a very clear direction but in cloud cuckoo land. An extremely specific apprenticeship which must be commutable from home as he won't live out (there are very few in the country and all require high grades/ are far away). So basically it's not going to happen.

Meanwhile he will try and get a job, any job, and maybe realise he needs to go to Uni to get into what he really wants to do. I'm really proud of him not just going to uni because school were pushing it (and he did get 2 offers). We sat down today to make a plan - things he'd like to do, how often per week, research, CV, job applications etc.

Penguinsa · 13/07/2024 16:57

Sorry to hear your DD has a chronic illness and can't be a lifeguard anymore ShanghaiDiva I hope she is getting good healthcare support and can still enjoy some of the summer. Hope you have a lovely holiday. We've had a bit of contact with Bath and DD said they were lovely and very supportive, glad to hear they are being helpful with your DD. Lovely city.

Welcome ladygaga I do have a vague and directionless DS but he's the year below DD and DD is the opposite. Though if your DC has done A levels and has a job my DS is a lot more advanced at vague and directionless has taken it to a whole new level. 😂I think these threads tend to get the super motivated children and parents and so even a child doing above average can appear behind. I know I dropped off the one for DS, just had nothing in common, and went to SN thread. He was also advanced at tantrums. Its strange though have one off to Oxford Uni and one going on PIP/UC and out of education, both same intelligence just one had a good school experience and NT and the other a very bad secondary experience and asd. Until end of primary on the same track with similar SATS.

chocolatenutcase · 13/07/2024 23:12

Checking in. Thanks for the new thread. DS doesn't have a job even though I've been telling him to get his CV out there. Currently on holiday so maybe he might try again when we're home.
Also trying not to think about results day

ladygoingGaga · 14/07/2024 08:51

Thank you Penguinsa I still remember the threads when DS was in primary school and there were the posters about their gifted and talented 5 year old having lessons on three different instruments, there is a reason they call comparison the thief of joy.

A few of you have touched on it, they are maturing so quickly, lots of ‘firsts’ which is exciting but also scary, (for me)
They are moments he seems mature and independent, and I have confidence and then another when I see the child in there too.

I know working over the summer will bring a healthy reality check, he used to be late for sixth form regularly, be interesting to see how a good bollocking from a boss goes down.

Penguinsa · 14/07/2024 23:58

Will be interesting to see if he's late for work Ladygoinggaga My DD is always late or missing school but very rare for her to be late or miss work (she gets paid by shift). Though exams she was cutting it quite fine and has turned up late to some of those, not massively late but still 🤔

crazycrofter · 15/07/2024 14:04

Hope you don’t mind another new joiner? I’ve been on a thread for dd (two years older) since year 10, but never joined one for ds!

He's not going to uni, he’s adamant he wants an apprenticeship and to make lots of money, but hasn’t applied yet (planned gap year)! He has ADHD and has an amazing hyper focus, but it kicks in very late. So he did no work, and had increasingly awful attendance, such that he missed most of the year 13 content - then in Feb decided to get his act together and teach himself everything he’d missed! It was tight and he had no time to do any practice papers so we will see how he’s done…

He’s currently doing all the hours he can get at his Tesco job.

crazycrofter · 15/07/2024 14:05

@ladygoingGaga @Penguinsa my ds is late for everything - school, exams, work etc! He told me the other day that he knows he needs to work on it so he can get a good reference for an apprenticeship, but he just can’t seem to do timekeeping at all…
