Thread 38 Covid Cohort, After Results Day

1000 replies

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 20/08/2022 06:03

ALL our children are heroes of their own stories, they have thrived through a once in a century catastrophe and they will succeed

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results (life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Sept?

Another tip for uni kit, find out if any of your local charity shops do special offer uni days. We have one that does an offer where you can buy as much as you can fit into a carrier bag for a fiver. Helps them to shift loads of stock that might otherwise go to landfill, but fab for us too.

Piggywaspushed · 20/08/2022 10:07

Morning and thank you OP.

Completely unrelated to the maters at hand but DS1 just received his marks for his uni resit. He passed! Got a 2:1 as it goes but the module is now capped at a third.

But, still, HUGE relief. A little fear focuses the mind.

AnneOfCleavage · 20/08/2022 10:08

Wow another thread filled up already. Thanks @CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee

Fantastic news @Benjispruce4 so happy your DD is sorted now and can start planning. Well done for keeping your head throughout all this stress.

Chenin I am disgusted by how Falmouth have treated your DD. It's shameful. I am crossing everything that you hear good news soon. I am very impressed at how you are both coping with all this. So proud of your DD.

I see from the list from SingingStones that your DD got Winchester kiwiandcherries and sorry I missed your post originally. Brilliant. Only two Primary Teachers to be on this thread. Just goes to show they need to treat teachers better and encourage more sign up.

Piggywaspushed do you have to prove you're going to Uni this year to get a railcard with that discount? Wondering if I may get one this year so DD can visit friends and then buy a 1 year one for her 3rd year if she needs one.

tryingmybest13 · 20/08/2022 10:09

@DontCallMeBaby How fantastic - congrats! Yes, schools and colleges should really show the whole range of brill achievements. My DS was predicted BBC and got A (high A) A (scraper!) B (and the B is one mark off so will likely go for a review: we would not normally do this but stuff it this time!). My friend's daughter had all 9s at GCSE was predicted three A stars and Got AAB - and Oxford PPE still let her in. But college disappointed..sheesh!

AnneOfCleavage · 20/08/2022 10:10

Oh wow congratulations to your DS1 @Piggywaspushed That's brilliant!

Good luck to all securing accommodation this weekend. Am dreading having to sort that next year and hoping I don't forget to sort finance with DD as she's on a gap year.

Monkey2001 · 20/08/2022 10:10

@Piggywaspushed well done to DS1, he has really come on from 2019!

@AnneOfCleavage it is an offer on the Trainline for all 18-25 railcards, not just students.

AnneOfCleavage · 20/08/2022 10:11

Thank you @Monkey2001 that's fab.

Monkey2001 · 20/08/2022 10:11

Actually @AnneOfCleavage it is all railcards www.thetrainline.com/trains/great-britain/railcards

ProggyMat · 20/08/2022 10:16

Thanks for the new thread @CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee !

Belting work on our list as always @singingstones!

DDs college accommodation is allocated when she arrives- she has college accommodation throughout so no stress over organising shared houses for 2nd year onwards.

She’s catered so less stuff to take down but I’m dreading the termly ‘clear out’ though…

Lots of admin to do for the end of this month and a mountain of reading and translations to complete before she travels down.

Its all feeling ‘very real’!

OublietteBravo · 20/08/2022 10:19

Hello 👋
Can I join in please? My DD got her A-level/BTEC results on Thursday and is off to Exeter (her first choice) to study business with law. We’re immensely proud of her. GCSE results (predicted grades) were quite disappointing and she had to reevaluate her 6th form options as a result. But she’s come out with
D*
D*
B
which is just fabulous! Especially as she only just scraped a D in her A-level philosophy mock.

I haven’t even started to get organised. Although we’re about to start major house renovations, so she can pretty much take anything from home that she wants (as long as it fits in the car).

Oblomov22 · 20/08/2022 10:21

Thank you Orange.
Thank you Singing.

DontCallMeBaby · 20/08/2022 10:24

@tryingmybest13 DD got CCD, graders you wouldn’t think existed at the school! One of those Cs was a U in the mocks …

One of her friends missed ONE of her A stars and thus her 3 x A star offer. Poor girl has long covid, she’s done incredibly.

Zebracat · 20/08/2022 10:27

Good morning. @CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee Thanks for the new thread. @singingstones Zebrakit is actually doing Flexible Combined Honours at Exeter.
Got no idea what accommodation she will have. so don’t know what bedding/ kitchen stuff we need. She doesn’t always check emails etc, so might be info there. Hope she doesn’t come too many croppers with that.
I think a rug and an emergency kit are excellent ideas.I was thinking 2 Bath and 2 hand towels? 21 pairs of knickers, or maybe 14? She will either cram ALL her clothes in the car or 3 pairs of knickers and 5 odd socks, depending on who she is that day, so I’d like some markers.
I am looking forward to getting some of her huge collection of novelty mugs that no one ever uses, out of my kitchen. It does seem to be the gift of choice amongst her friends and they drive me nuts, can’t stack them, don’t go in the dishwasher, weird corners that get left unwashed and really lurid colours bleurgh. Clearly she doesn’t need a full dinner service, but maybe 2 of everything? Maybe she does need a full dinner service. I dont know aargh.

We live near Leicester, I stayed after postgrad. It’s a lovely university, and a brilliantly multicultural city. The curries are imo better than anywhere else, so many different styles.Long way from the sea though.

Piggywaspushed · 20/08/2022 10:28

Looking at singing's list, there is such a fabulous range of fascinating subjects our DC's are doing! (for some reason, my DS tells everyone who asks that he is doing economics, because they understand that bit of his degree title, but what he is actually doing sounds so much better! Policy, politics and economics.)

You are right in lots of ways about DS1 monkey. The recent shambles was temporary restoration to past form! I keep thinking about him when I read that awful'my son is such a terrible failure' thread...

Good heavens! Where was giving out 3 A star offers!?

That's such a shame about the long covid. Some children really did suffer quite badly.

Piggywaspushed · 20/08/2022 10:31

Benji your DD may have dodged a bullet. The handful of UK students who got into York on clearing have been told there is no accommodation left (which is odd because insurance offer holders could book accommodation...).

tryingmybest13 · 20/08/2022 10:32

@DontCallMeBaby That is a cracking achievement!! What is your DD off to study?

@OublietteBravo Fantastic!!!!!!!!!

Zebracat · 20/08/2022 10:33

Welcome@OublietteBravo . From a fellow Exeterer. Well done to your Dd. Her poor friend though. I didn’t know anywhere asked for 3 xA*.

Anon778833 · 20/08/2022 10:35

Thank you for the new thread! I am finding these threads so useful. My daughter is the first one of my DD’s to reach university age. I’m sorry I can’t contribute as much help as some of the rest of you.

We are still waiting to hear about accommodation. The helpline said it takes 48 hours at least to sort out! She is supposed to move in on 19th September.

Zebracat · 20/08/2022 10:37

Oops sorry, mixed up 2 posts. Welcome also to @DontCallMeBaby , congrats to your Dd and commiserations to her friend. And grr to educational establishments that don’t celebrate progress and ALL their students.

DontCallMeBaby · 20/08/2022 10:38

@Piggywaspushed it was computer science at Manchester wanted 3 x A star … meanwhile at work we wonder but WHY don’t girls do computer science? Well this one did but now won’t go to her chosen uni cos its offers are crazy high. Obviously they’re high because they can ‘afford’ to be but it still seems mad. I think she’s going to Bristol instead.

@tryingmybest13 TESOL and Korean

ealingwestmum · 20/08/2022 10:39

That must have been a huge relief Piggy re DS1. I think your DS2’s course sounds fab btw, all 3 components :)

NCTDN · 20/08/2022 10:40

It's true about how establishments don't celebrate all successes at whatever level. DD never got any mention at her college as her achievements obviously aren't worthy enough. She got AAAA* Hmm

OublietteBravo · 20/08/2022 10:40

@Zebracat - which campus is your DD going to? Mine is going to be at Penryn. I swear she was determined to get as far away from home as possible (we’re in East Anglia - she applied to Exeter, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Northumbria and Bournemouth)!

Piggywaspushed · 20/08/2022 10:41

3 A*s is mad. Bet they had quite a lot who missed that. Poor girl but Bristol's gain!
