Thread 38 Covid Cohort, After Results Day

1000 replies

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 20/08/2022 06:03

ALL our children are heroes of their own stories, they have thrived through a once in a century catastrophe and they will succeed

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results (life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Sept?

As I was saying, he had a crap last six months and didn't put in the effort he should have. Last minute cramming seemed to have worked for him but I hope he doesn't take the same approach at uni. He was really pissed off that loads of his law class missed paper 3 with Covid. They hadn't finished the content and DS thought he'd scraped a pass at best and should have claimed illness. He was one of only two A stars 😁

Its interesting reading all the planning going on. Nothing of note organised here. I assume DS has had an email from Nottingham but I've hardly seen him since Thursday so no idea. Accomodation was sorted in April. There must be something I need to do before I go on holiday next weekend. Knowing DS, he'll give me a long list of things he needs to night before he leaves.

Oh that's fantastic news @ Piggy. Well done to your Ds.

ealingwestmum · 20/08/2022 13:25

Happy birthday to Minisprout Eww!

Morning and thank you OP.

Completely unrelated to the maters at hand but DS1 just received his marks for his uni resit. He passed! Got a 2:1 as it goes but the module is now capped at a third.

But, still, HUGE relief. A little fear focuses the mind.

Great news @Piggywaspushed ! Phew!

@Benjispruce4 The only 2 I know that are heading to NTU are a bright but disorganised and not showing it in exams sort of guy, and a girl who is a straight A star ex-head girl. She had the pick of just about anywhere and chose NTU.

Wanted to thank all those that gave advice on the Strathclyde/ UEA decision and update where we are.

Just on our way back from a lovely open day at UEA. A wonderful, warm uni but just not for DS. Glad DD came with us as feel it may suit her better when her times comes!

so Strath it is!

Monkey2001 · 20/08/2022 14:27

Well done @isthisreallyitoh , it looked like he was heading that way. Good luck on the accommodation! Let us know....

HarrietDVane · 20/08/2022 14:29

Great news @Piggywaspushed! What a relief.

Congratulations to all DC (and supporting families) on fabulous results, at every level. DD's school was quite good in celebrating all the students - not just the high flyers. It great to see so many smiling faces and learn of so many exciting plans for the future.

Benjispruce4 · 20/08/2022 14:33

Thanks @DoggerelBank that’s reassuring and @isthisreallyitoh one less thing to worry about, you can move forward. Hope all works out.

NCTDN · 20/08/2022 14:43

Wow @isthisreallyitoh you've done really well to get to visit today! Glad the decision is made.

Cheers Singing. I have asked ds to check emails re reading lists. Blimey that's quick!

Fruitygal · 20/08/2022 15:04

@EwwSprouts Happy Birthday to mini sprout! Hope he loves it - meal and pub crawl x

Seeline · 20/08/2022 15:04

@isthisreallyitoh glad you've made the decision.
@Piggywaspushed good news for your DS. I still worry about bits of work my Y2 DS tells me about - normally about 48 hours before the deadline that he hasn't yet started 🙄

Welcome to all the newcomers and returners!

Just back from a very successful shop at Dunelm. 10% discount offered without us asking, if DD could show her acceptance email - it all helps. Got £10 off at IKEA with Unidays code too.

Comefromaway · 20/08/2022 15:10

Place marking on the new thread.

ds’s band played a gig last night and I had to transport a drum kit back to his mate’s house afterwards so didn’t get home until 1.30am

cant quite believe I’m going to be an empty nester.

Fruitygal · 20/08/2022 15:11

@isthisreallyitoh congratulations 🎉 must be a relief - and potentially a choice for littler one - win win

Fruitygal · 20/08/2022 15:26

@CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee @singingstones thanks for the new thread lovely to hear about people’s news!

DS2 lives away as job in filming takes him all over but coming home tonight to go out for a celebration family dinner with all the DCs tonight. So excited love having them together x

looked at DSA stuff today and need to figure out whether to go MacBookAir or standard laptop. Plus book tech support sessions.

MummaMinnie · 20/08/2022 15:52

So we found out DD was one mark short of a B for AQA physics. I finally got a reply from the exams officer yesterday evening (who was a little snippy I should add). Nothing from her subject teacher so I'll email head of 6th again first thing on Monday and cc the physics teacher. I think it's definitely worth pursuing a remark. A friend suggested getting one paper remarked at a time and as we're not in a hurry (DD taking a gap year) I think we have time. It won't change which course she'll do but I think she'll be happier if she moves up a grade.

singingstones · 20/08/2022 15:56

@ChristopherTracy
DS has received his email about accommodation - online induction on 26th Aug and then you can book your arrival slot. Room allocations happen after deposit is paid in the first week of September.

Oblomov22 · 20/08/2022 16:10

Singing, will check to see if ours is the same, 26th August.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 20/08/2022 16:18

Blimey you lot, I disappear for a day and there’s a new thread! 😄

Glad to hear that people have got courses sorted, it must have been an incredibly stressful few days. X

I have started a list today and keep thinking of things to add. No IKEA trip for us, it’ll be Dunelm, Wilkos and the like. We have submitted a request for a change of room if one is available, I’m sure it won’t be it I’m loathe to buy the bedding until I know for sure.

Are we supposed to do anything with regard to the confirmed offer? I couldn’t see anything but have become paranoid.

Delphigirl · 20/08/2022 16:20

@isthisreallyitoh I’m so glad he has made a positive decision! Hurrah!

Cafeconleche · 20/08/2022 17:20

@isthisreallyitoh - congrats on the decision - it’s as important to know what you don’t want as it is to know what you do want! He’ll have a fabulous time in Glasgow I’m sure.

whoamitojudge · 20/08/2022 17:22

Just popped on here to say well done to everyone for moving up to the next step.
I don’t know if any of you remember me, my DD was cabin crew for RyanAir up until a month ago but due to very unforeseen circumstances she had to quit.
She is still working at the airport and hasn’t been put off by what happened and hopes to apply for Qantas or Emirates in the next few years

NCTDN · 20/08/2022 17:48

Online induction for accommodation next week? Wow!
