Thread 38 Covid Cohort, After Results Day

1000 replies

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 20/08/2022 06:03

ALL our children are heroes of their own stories, they have thrived through a once in a century catastrophe and they will succeed

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results (life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Sept?

We did the Men B jabs a few years ago, also HPV for DS.

Mention of Keele Uni makes me think of the film Marvellous with Toby Jones. Not directly about uni life but partly set there, the true story of a man with learning disabilities who makes himself a life there and at Stoke FC. I came across it on TV late one Christmas Day when guests had all gone home, it is an absolute delight.

DS is struggling with admin fatigue too. Welcome to being an adult.

Benjispruce4 · 23/08/2022 07:52

@carben if they had all available jabs at school then they are covered. NHS does not recommend men b for students as it’s most common on babies and toddlers. There is a slight increase in cases in teens but not enough to warrant a roll out of the jab. DD1 didn’t have it. Ensure MMR doses complete. DD said mumps went round at Durham among those that didn’t have MMR plus infected a few others that did. You’d have to pay privately for men b. At least that is my understanding.

Benjispruce4 · 23/08/2022 07:58

@crazycrofter you have a lot on your plate! DD1 was catered but had a kitchenette so took a couple of mugs, a bowl and a side plate for toast/ cereal when she misses breakfast (most days) so it is a lot easier when first year is catered! I am a lot less stressed about getting stuff this time. You can just send Amazon to them with any essentials overnight!

NCTDN · 23/08/2022 09:11

DD has just had her animaron for Bristol confirmed. After the mess up last year, I'm just pleased she has accommodation in the city but she's actually got her first choice.

NCTDN · 23/08/2022 09:12

*accomodation

Alsoplayspiccolo · 23/08/2022 09:36

First trip to IKEA was not a success yesterday.
DH got the times wrong for when breakfast is available, cue 4 hangry people wandering around the store with no shopping list…

DD is off to stay at a friend’s tonight before heading to Reading tomorrow until Monday, by which time she won’t be fit for anything.

DS leaves for boarding school in just over a week.

I’m Im wading through quicksand, trying to organise bank accounts, medical stuff, dentists, opticians, hair cuts, uniform, uni supplies, DSA etc in between raging hormones, which mean I keep finding myself in tears at inopportune moments (TK Maxx yesterday).
Im a mess!

That's great! Which accommodation does she have? My Ds hasn't got any of his choices and has been allocated Rackhay. Anyone know anything about this place?! Thanks

NCTDN · 23/08/2022 09:49

Sorry to hear that @GloriosaB
I've not heard of there. Somehow she got her top choice of Wills.

Seeline · 23/08/2022 09:55

@PhotoDad A Very Peculiar Practice and Porterhouse Blue are two of my all-time favourite series! AVPP was just my style of humour and so few people have ever heard of it.
There's Educating Rita but she's probably a bit older than our lot 😁

Benjispruce4 · 23/08/2022 10:03

DD has updated SF, applied for HSBC account and bought railcard.
Can relax a bit now and focus on holiday next week.

tryingmybest13 · 23/08/2022 10:09

Hi all - great to see everyone getting sorted! DS did his online accom. induction and now has a pass and time slot for moving in. Seems to be organising himself quite well..for once!

Cafeconleche · 23/08/2022 10:11

@CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee The History Man by Malcom Bradbury? He was my tutor at UEA back in the day and the series was played on a loop in the SU. It did have a very Abigail’s Party vibe about it so I get the Mike Leigh association…

omnishambles · 23/08/2022 10:13

In a bit of limbo here. No admin done as DS hasnt received any emails plus he's at work full time.

mummyinbeds · 23/08/2022 10:20

@EquallyDivided I knew Neil Baldwin (the man played by Toby Jones in Marvellous) when I was at Keele. He was certainly a character 😂

DS has told me to stop listing things he needs to do. He hasn't done anything about uni since Thursday and I'm on holiday for two weeks from this weekend. Today is list day whether he likes it or not. His sister will be home from Africa tomorrow together with her usual whirlwind of chaos so he can hide from my lists then.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 23/08/2022 10:23

How’s her African adventure been, mummy? I take it she didn’t contract malaria??

Comefromaway · 23/08/2022 10:25

I've met him a few times as my dad has seasonal hospitality at Stoke City. He is mobbed everywhere he goes these days!

singingstones · 23/08/2022 10:28

Oh Also Flowers
You have got a tough few weeks to get through.

I was at ikea yesterday too, with DD though, as naturally DS is not yet engaging with the idea of leaving home 🤨

singingstones · 23/08/2022 10:39

Looks like Covid vaccinations are back, I have just received an appointment.

Yes ! Oh thank you that was going to annoy me!

@singingstones for another booster? For you or your DC?

Alsoplayspiccolo · 23/08/2022 10:46

Thanks, singing.
What time we’re you there? I bet we walked past each other without realising!
And what time DOES IKEA finish serving breakfast??

No call for COVID vaccs here yet. Just trying to sort out how best to organise DD’s ADHD/GP care.

mummyinbeds · 23/08/2022 10:59

@Alsoplayspiccolo she has had the most amazing time in Africa. No malaria for her but one of her room mates got it apparently. She has plans to go back for longer next year post A levels (not sure how she's funding that). She's now in Cairo with a personal tour guide for the whole day.

singingstones · 23/08/2022 11:08

@Benjispruce4
For me, it will be my second booster. Unfortunately it's on the day I think I'll be taking DS to Nottingham but will find that out on Friday.

@Alsoplayspiccolo we weren't there until about 3pm I think, I tried to get DD to go for breakfast but she wasn't having it. I think 11am is the cut off and apparently getting out of bed in time to make that is very difficult.

I did have fun spotting the uni shoppers, pairs of teenagers and parents with trolleys full of storage boxes, cushions and kitchen stuff!

Fiddlersgreen · 23/08/2022 11:18

IKEA on Thursday for us after getting DS2’s gcse results. I feel a bit guilty not making the day all about him so trying to encourage him to do something with his friends as DS1 and I don’t really have any other day we can go before he goes on holiday next week and I don’t want to leave it until after as it’s so late.

@NCTDN great news on getting first choice accommodation! We are still waiting to hear from Leicester which is frustrating as there are two different sized beds so can’t buy any bedding until we know and also not sure of the moving in date and DS will need to hand in notice at his job.

@singingstones do you mind if ask, are you eligible for another booster through vulnerability or age?

@mummyinbeds DD’s adventure sounds amazing, bet you can’t wait have her home though. My DS is always making plans without considering how to pay for them!

EquallyDivided · 23/08/2022 11:22

We were in Ikea yesterday too, the Reading one at about 4.15, it was surprisingly quiet. I was also hangry, had only had bit of cake mid afternoon on the uni visit, didn't want cake or a whole plate of meatballs so grabbed a hotdog and some cinnamon buns on the way out. DS was in a good mood though, I'm really glad we went for one last visit to the uni before moving in day

I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed by the admin too, the DSA stuff is quite a lot to sort out, every time I tick something off the list I add a couple more things.

Want to get caught up tonight so I can turn some attention to DD, her GCSE results and college starting stuff over the next few days, don't want her feeling overshadowed.
