Thread 38 Covid Cohort, After Results Day

1000 replies

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 20/08/2022 06:03

ALL our children are heroes of their own stories, they have thrived through a once in a century catastrophe and they will succeed

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results (life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Sept?

Congrats on the award @PhotoDad

Nottingham people might like to get their DC to listen to Mark Steele's in Town on R4 tonight as he was taking about Nottingham.www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m001bgrp?partner=uk.co.bbc&origin=share-mobile

@Fiddlersgreen Ds filled out an application for HSBC today. They didn't ask for proof of ID. Just said they'd be in touch. When ds1 opened an account there online he had to take ID into our local branch.

@OverlySensitive ds1 got his £100 after his loan went in. So do they have to start using the account within 30 days? Ds won't use it until his loan goes in. But maybe that will be 30 days by the time he gets it opened.

We haven't had dates for the maintenance loan yet. There's a letter saying when tuition fees will go to the university. But nothing for maintenance loan. I hope he gets it before each rental payment.

@NotSorry ds1 was in Paston house too. If any new people on here are in Paston house at UEA there were no beside tables. So we had to go and buy one...but everywhere had sold out as students had bought them all. I found one eventually in B&M.

Ds is working full time until 5pm the day before he moves in. The others are finishing the week before. But he wants to stay on. So I can't see him doing much packing.

What did your dd make @PhotoDad ? And what's the cookbook out of curiosity?

Dd hasn't done much cooking at all during a-levels. She's got a reasonable understanding because I love cooking and food so plenty of exposure, but isn't very dexterous so needs to practice. She did a good job with a simple pasta dish from the Nosh book that could definitely be a meal she makes for herself.

We had a very nice chicken and veg pie, although she cheated with ready-made pastry. We swear by the Dairy Book of Home Cookery, which has simple no-frills recipes for anything you might reasonably want to make.

Wow! From the uni?

Yes, not much in the scheme of things but she was very pleased!

singingstones · 22/08/2022 21:40

I'm sure this has come up before but I can't remember the advice - are DC switching to uni GP or staying put? I read something the other day suggesting that if you live in Wales it's best to stay registered at home because prescriptions are free, but DS will be away more than he's here and doesn't have any complex health needs or ongoing medications. I think if we have to choose where it's slightly more difficult to see a doctor because you're not on the books, I'd prefer that to be here. If it's at uni he probably just wouldn't go. What do people think?

Good question. My DD is planning to switch to uni GP just as soon as her repeat prescription from her normal GP has come through (a month's supply of medication, so there's time to sort out any problems... we hope). Uni has an on-campus GP so fingers crossed that it's straightforward.

Fiddlersgreen · 22/08/2022 21:46

Been wondering about the GP thing too so any advice welcome.

@icanbewhatiwant I’m sure I read they have to do 5 transactions within 30 days of the account opening in order to qualify for the £100. I’m thinking we just put £20 in and make some small transactions once he has the card

icanbewhatiwant · 22/08/2022 21:55

@Fiddlersgreen ok thanks. Will have to look out for that then.

There was a post on the WIWIKAU page about GO's. Someone who worked in a gp surgery said they should register at the uni GP. Then be a temporary patient at the home GP. She also said if any urgent hospital referrals were needed then the home GP can only refer to a local GP. There will always be walk in surgeries though. Ds1 did register at uni. But he could have stayed home as spent a lot of time at home due to covid, plus we aren't far from where he was anyway. But I think ds2 will register at uni. He will stay with our dentist though. NHS dentist are rare here.

Thinking of GPs... does anyone else remember "A Very Peculiar Practice" with Peter Davison as the newbie in a uni clinic?

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 22/08/2022 22:12

Very vaguely @PhotoDad I must have been around 8 but thought PD was quite dashing !

EwwSprouts · 22/08/2022 22:14

@PhotoDad Yes!

Also someone mentioned Sheldon's shirt folder a few pages back. Love Big Bang & Young Sheldon has its moments too.

carben · 22/08/2022 22:15

Re GP's. What's the recommendation for vaccinations before starting Uni.? I know meningitis is one but I'm pretty sure they had the ACWY around Yr 9/10. Anyone know if a booster is advisable?

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 22/08/2022 22:17

Another lot of admin sorted this evening Dd has been emailed today and chosen her modules. It is all a little bit exciting now.

@Photodad I loved Very Peculiar Practice. It was a certain style of humour that you don't see any more.
I'm another one concerned about gp registration. Especially with regard to shared care agreements on ADHD meds.

EquallyDivided · 22/08/2022 22:18

I've never heard of a booster for ACWY but ours missed out on Men B (I think its on the NHS list now but wasn't when they were the right age). You can get Men B privately at Boots or Superdrug but needs two doses.

Cantonet · 22/08/2022 22:24

Thank you @Equallydivided.
I will check the student loan portal.
Everything's done but I didn't know whether Ds had received the approval letter. I can't get any sense out of him today anyway. He slept for 18 hours yesterday & was them awake all night & most of today.

Isthisjustnormal · 22/08/2022 22:24

A very peculiar practice was strongly modelled in Warwick uni (family member taught there at the time and the author has worked there). The setting, scenarios and the characters were apparently VERY recognisable if you knew the uni!

Isthisjustnormal · 22/08/2022 22:36

Ds has done online enrollement today and is all emailed up :-) Tommorrow plan is to register for a bank account. I’m being much more hands off the some of you - ds is in charge of creating his own list of stuff he needs : anything he forgets he can sort once it’s there!!

mummyinbeds · 22/08/2022 22:38

A Very Peculiar Practice was filmed at Keele and Birmingham Universities. I remember it being talked about a lot when I was at Keele but I've never actually seen it.

PhotoDad · 22/08/2022 22:41

I'm glad other people have at least heard of Very Peculiar Practice, it normally gets blank looks when I mention it! I'd love to watch it again. It's a very odd style of humour which I really enjoyed. What other good uni-based TV shows are there? (I did watch Fresh Meat, which had its moments.)

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 22/08/2022 23:31

There was one drama / film in the 70s ...I can't for the life of me remember who wrote it...it might have been Mike Lee. A senior lecturer has an affair with a student AFAIR. The portrayal of the Senate/Committee function was eerily spot on !

Re meningitis B I was looking into this yesterday and found a clinic who said they could do it, but the two doses have to be at least 2 months apart, so potentially one just before they go and one when they come back for Christmas hols I guess. But maybe there are places where they can be closer together, I had previously thought it was only one month apart. Not sure whether to fork out or not, DS is not particularly keen anyway.

I wish I could be more hands off with DS but nothing would get done, he hasn't a clue. I need to talk him through everything, trying that again today after he postponed yesterday's admin session due to being "too tired" 🤨

PhotoDad · 23/08/2022 05:56

Hmmmm. I do take the point about Meningitis and it might be a good idea. But after her two last vaccinations at school DD had a week in bed with a temperature, which would be bad timing. Hmmmm.

Let us know if anyone can track down @CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee's film! I've also thought of Porterhouse Blue, and (much more recently) The Chair.

Off to a favourite National Trust property with DD today! I asked her if there was anything she'd really like to do this week and that's what she suggested. It surprised me a little!
