1000 replies

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 07/04/2022 13:15

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

I've made this one a little bit earlier as things are so busy, at home and on thread, so please feel free to use up previous thread first

I'm planning on a holiday in Oct half term week near where dd ends up at uni - hopefully somewhere I like then!! That way I get a holiday but also get to see her.

Zebracat · 12/04/2022 17:12

@Cantonet. That is weird then, bites do usually have a puncture mark?
My other children were born to me. It’s really not heartbreaking. We love her, and we all get on very well. She isn’t very expressive so we don’t always know what she’s thinking, but I did just ask her if she would want me to visit and she said of course and gave me a tight hug. But if she didn’t keep in touch much, that would be ok too, she’s been really hard work , and it would mean we’d done a good job.It would also mean wed got our house and freedom back!

icanbewhatiwant · 12/04/2022 17:36

@Decorhate we filled in a current year income form for Ds1. We had to predict the amount we thought we'd earn. Then send the proof of actual earnings the following May.

Decorhate · 12/04/2022 17:55

@icanbewhatiwant Thanks. We are going to just go with the 20/21 income for now & contact them again once we know how things pan out.

Fruitygal · 12/04/2022 18:04

Thanks for the suggestion for you tube etc - she’s using tutor for u - they suggested going into London for the sessions but school still going on so would miss other lessons but paid for the online sessions instead.

Piggywaspushed · 12/04/2022 18:10

Tutor2u has loads of free stuff online and YouTube. Don't pay!!

Piggywaspushed · 12/04/2022 18:12

Now we have actual bank account with sort code achieved, we have to wait for the details to come in the post... student finance still on hold...

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 12/04/2022 18:26

Mmmm well if Dd goes to Southampton I've been told I must visit once a month with Dog. I don't think she is bothered about her parents and she has openly admitted to liking the fact she is nearby if she 'needs us' but won't visit if she doesn't feel like it Confused She has promised to come back and visit Nan once a month too. It will be nice to be near enough to see her music performances. The day Dd was born DH was at Southampton hospital and managed to zoom back to our town (placenta abruption) in 25 mins. The train takes a funny route so nearer an hour that way.

I don't see DS coming home until xmas. He is open to being bribed with meet up for lunch maybe half-way which works easily with trains.

Loving the talk of revision. Just chatting as making tea, I asked DS if he had revised a bit of all three subjects today and apparently he started the maths chapter they have to teach themselves this holiday! Shock

@Piggywaspushed Glad you found the pot of gold.

@Zebracat So pleased you got a hug. I'm sure you've earned plenty

crazycrofter · 12/04/2022 21:47

Dd is offended if I even mention revision as she’s ‘got it covered’ Grin I think she’s done some today. She met a friend for lunch at Maccies and is at the gym now but her laptop had some History open when I looked.

She said she’s been added to a Snapchat group chat for Psychology at Nottingham but she hasn’t said anything yet!

Piggywaspushed · 12/04/2022 21:59

I made revision timetables for all the students I teach.... no wonder one of them called me mum the other week...

crazycrofter · 12/04/2022 22:07

Wow @Piggywaspushed! I’m afraid neither of my kids would use a timetable made by a teacher; their efforts are slightly wasted on them! They just like to do their own thing.. whether it works or not!

Piggywaspushed · 12/04/2022 22:09

Well, yes, I imagine I have wasted my time for most of them...but at least it means they can't accuse me further down the line of ay neglect!! Grin

NCTDN · 12/04/2022 22:14

I've suggested doing a revision timetable and was flatly told no!

EwwSprouts · 12/04/2022 22:20

I think that you have supported them in that way is brilliant @Piggywaspushed

DS is also, as far as I can make out from the little activity, a random reviser. Tomorrow is sport all day.

Piggywaspushed · 12/04/2022 22:24

The trouble is my colleague came along and spammed her revision all over my timetable too and now it looks a touch...overwhelming!

DS starts revising at 9 and finishes about 4 with breaks. Bless him.

I am a very bad Real Mother though. I forgot to pick him up from band practice. DH only reminded me when I was already 10 minutes late...

singingstones · 12/04/2022 22:25

My DC have both called a teacher mum in the past. And then DD actually called me Mrs Hoddinott once Hmm
Alsoplayspiccolo · 12/04/2022 22:27

You sound like an awesome teacher,Piggy!
I tried creating a revision timetable for both my DCs but only as far as subjects and timings went.
They were abandoned after day 1…

DD is spending all day in her room, working; mostly trying to finish her NEAs, with some revision alongside.
DS is away on a residential, but I’m hoping he’s squeezing some maths revision in, at least.

crazycrofter · 12/04/2022 22:39

Ds in year 11 will only revise one subject at a time. He’s worked through the whole of the Physics and Chemistry content and is nearly done with Biology. I do wonder whether he’ll remember it in six weeks time though and he’s still got 6 subjects to go. And two hours a day is slow progress… but he’s surprisingly confident about the whole thing?! He keeps telling me he’s going to do well. He’s also suddenly developed a desire to prove people wrong! He said a boy in his science class asked him if he was even going to bother turning up for his exams Grin - a valid question given his poor attendance and punctuality this year. But now he wants to show him! Which must be a good thing…

icanbewhatiwant · 13/04/2022 08:27

I wouldn't dare ask about revision. Ds always likes to not do anything I ask. So I won't say anything. He was in school all day Monday and Tuesday getting his business studies coursework done. Lots have finished it already, but seems he's in no hurry. I expect the poor teacher wants it completed, there were only 5 of them in working on it. If it were me I'd want to finish as they've taken the written the exam. So once coursework is completed business lessons are finished.

EasterDecorations · 13/04/2022 08:51

DS only has history to revise for plus one BTEC Sport exam, but the sport one is some sort of open book format and he thinks he's better working with the whole class on that so not doing too much. Doing 2-3 hours a day on history though, which includes half an hour of me going through the day's work with him in the evening (he is writing notes, mind maps etc). I am learning lots.

DD (y11) - I don't know, she is permanently plugged into her airpods and she doesn't want to talk to me about work, all suggestions are batted away. I'm out at work all day so really a bit unaware of what she's doing. She has always been a hard worker so I have got my fingers crossed.

Wheresthebeach · 13/04/2022 10:57

That's impressive Piggy. DD's teachers won't even give guidance on how much revision to do, far less do a timetable. Frankly I'd like them to say to the kids x hours per week but they just waffle about doing enough, but not to do so much there's no rest. Confused.

I fear DD isn't doing enough, but am leaving her to it.

Seeline · 13/04/2022 11:04

DD is beginning to panic. Hasn't done enough, doesn't know how to revise, is getting all confused by the advanced information - should she keep revising everything or just stick to the stuff on the advanced notice? Doesn't have a revision timetable as she panics if she hasn't managed to do everything scheduled for the day and then goes into a downward spiral. She is doing at least 4 hours a day, but not sure how useful it is.

School have 'helpfully' scheduled in 'paper 3' mocks which are shoehorned into the first 3 weeks of term, which means she is concentrating too much on the subject material for those when she won't be sitting the actual exams in those until mid June, and ignoring the stuff for the exams she has in 5 weeks time. Not really sure how to help....

Wheresthebeach · 13/04/2022 11:09

Having Googled a bit about revision I've read that 4 hours a day is a good amount as more just won't go it. I'm hoping that's right as that's what DD thinks. She's done some longer days over the holiday, but also doesn't want to go back to school tired. Her asthma is still acting up post Covid so it's a balancing act.

Seeline I hope 4 hours a day is enough!

Piggywaspushed · 13/04/2022 11:09

You'd be amazed how many parents complain when teachers suggest revision! True story...
