Thread 31 Covid Cohort - Hopping through Easter and Revision

1000 replies

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 07/04/2022 13:15

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

I've made this one a little bit earlier as things are so busy, at home and on thread, so please feel free to use up previous thread first

fiddlers, that's journalism isn't it? Tbh, looking back at your DS's offers, Sheffield and Cardiff are much superior for journalism anyway!! And Bournemouth is very well known for media.

Heifer · 09/04/2022 11:58

Sorry to hear that @Fiddlersgreen - hope he isn't too deflated -and can now pick his favourites.

@Piggywaspushed I've just PMd you - take a look

Fiddlersgreen · 09/04/2022 12:04

@Piggywaspushed yes journalism, he is leaning towards Cardiff, he was impressed at the offer holder day and loved the city. We have since discovered that the course is not NCTJ accredited though whereas Bournemouth and Brighton are (he wasn’t keen on Sheffield in the end) I’m not sure how much difference that will make.

@Heifer thanks, he doesn’t seem too bothered, plus the fact he forgot about it! Just annoying that we waited so long for them to respond, if they’re going to reject why can’t they do it early?!

Piggywaspushed · 09/04/2022 12:16

Thanks to heifer , I am going to ask MNHQ to remove my link above!

I am posting the overall survey and you can find the download in it!

Piggywaspushed · 09/04/2022 12:17

I think the accreditation is seen as being important - it may be Cardiff's way of saying an undergrad really isn't enough and funnelling students into their highly regarded postgrad routes...

They took that off very quickly Piggy!

Piggywaspushed · 09/04/2022 14:22

They did : it was proper interesting read though!!

Piggywaspushed · 09/04/2022 14:46

So DH appears to have helpfully thrown out every shred of evidence ever that DS has a Nationwide account... I swear he even has two... looks like fun trip to a branch at some point!

crazycrofter · 09/04/2022 15:33

They should be able to locate it @Piggywaspushed if you give them a passport or birth certificate

I can’t believe only Santander do student perks with their bank accounts now! I’m sure they all used to offer something? Ideally dd would convert her Lloyds account as she’s used to the app and she has a savings account with them too, but the railcard is worth switching for I think.

Heifer · 09/04/2022 15:44

How long is the railcard for @crazycrofter - I've looked and it's £30 for a railcard for 1 yr, so for me it probably wouldn't be worth DD switching to Santander because as you say DD is used to the Natwest App and will be moving money from saving accounts to student account (once she has turned if from current account - assume easy to do... so will just make it easier to be all on 1 place to view (she really isn't that tech savy for a teenager - oh that would be because I do it all for her! I really do need to step back (once exams are finished).....

Piggywaspushed · 09/04/2022 15:46

I certainly hope so since his inheritance is stashed away somewhere!!

Nationwide used to do a railcard , I think. But tbh, if you have Tesco Clubcard you can get a cheaper one that way. Nationwide's' overdrafts are good.

Heifer · 09/04/2022 15:51

Looks like Natwest offer overdraft of up to £2k (£500 for 1st term) and a tastecard..

crazycrofter · 09/04/2022 16:21

@heifer it’s a four year railcard. Dd anticipates using it a lot to visit other friends around the country so I think it’s worth it.

Heifer · 09/04/2022 16:29

ah now that changes everything - DD can get used to a new app ;-)

Cantonet · 09/04/2022 16:34

DS has just spent ages submitting the DSA form & completing the questionnaire. I was there to answer any questions, but not to do it for him. The more he does of these, all the better for his Dyslexia. We've doing a face to face assessment on Thursday.

DS was still being bitten after a complete change & clean of bedding & floor of his room, so we let off an insecticide bomb in his room last night.
We thought he might have bed bugs or fleas but we can't see anything. Now I'm thinking it might be bird mites, maybe from nesting birds. He has a skylight above his bed that he leaves wide open and an old chimney right next to his bed.
He can stay in his sister's room for a few days so I can do another bomb plus a spray.

Piggywaspushed · 09/04/2022 16:54

We had fleas recently. I was being bitten for weeks....

NCTDN · 09/04/2022 18:17

Thanks for the new thread. DD still waiting to hear from Durham Hmm

Wheresthebeach · 09/04/2022 22:33

We had fleas…no idea how. Up in the top bedroom. Had to do multiple flea bombs to get rid of the bitey little bastards.

Heifer · 10/04/2022 08:30

Nottingham - those with accommodation booked can I ask when it starts from? (and if on 31 week contract)?

Just asking as DDs is from 22nd Sept. Start of term is Monday 26 September 2022. So when is Freshers or Welcome week as Nottingham seem to call it - all their information is still showing 2021 dates.

I am sure I read something which mentioned moving in up to 24th as their is a Marathon on 25th Sept in Nottingham but can't find it now.

mummyinbeds · 10/04/2022 08:43

@heifer DS has a 31 week contract from 22nd too. I remember reading something about a marathon but can't remember if that was 2021 or 2022. So basically I have no idea and am no help whatsoever 🙃

singingstones · 10/04/2022 09:39

DS's contract is 22 Sept - 27 July

Freshers week 2022 already has its own Facebook page saying 19-26 September - not sure how that works with accommodation contracts starting halfway through?

Yes there is a half marathon in Nottingham on 25 September so hopefully they will avoid that as a moving in day.

Heifer · 10/04/2022 10:21

Thanks @mummyinbeds & @singingstones. Is the FB page definitely one from Nottingham Uni though as often other companies set up Freshers Week stuff and it's not anything to do with the uni. I definitely read somewhere that moving in would be before the half marathan so I guess it will be from the Thursday - Saturday (22nd - 24th Sept.
I wonder if the first week of term is actually Freshers week with no lectures etc until the following week?

icanbewhatiwant · 10/04/2022 10:27

I know it's a different university but Ds1 moved into UEA accommodation on the Sunday freshers week was that whole week, lectures started on the Monday. So he had freshers week and lectures. He was arriving home 3am and lectures were 9am. He says he's never been so tired. I know other unis do it with freshers the week before though. That's a much better idea!
