Thread 31 Covid Cohort - Hopping through Easter and Revision

1000 replies

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 07/04/2022 13:15

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

I've made this one a little bit earlier as things are so busy, at home and on thread, so please feel free to use up previous thread first

DS has decided he just can't be bothered with chasing for a change of halls and declared 'it is what it is'. Cool, just saved me almost £2k which can go towards a holiday for me, DH and DS2!! Grin Anyone want to buy a 3/4 bed sheet and mattress protector from me? Yes, yes, I know I jumped the gun but I genuinely didn't believe it would be this bad!

DS says there's quite few going to Notts from his school (assuming passing grades), including one of his besties.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 08/04/2022 16:34

@mummyinbeds he'll be fine when he gets there, he'll have loads of new mates within days.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 08/04/2022 16:36

Maybe we should do an MN Notts post drop off coffee pub meet and celebrate having finally got them!

mummyinbeds · 08/04/2022 16:42

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn I know he'll be fine. It's me who won't be 🤣 I remember my mum leaving me at uni in tears. I was at the student union and drunk before she got home. It was about two weeks before I phoned home, back in the days when she had no way of contacting me. Thank goodness for mobile phones, email, Whatsapp, zoom etc etc. I know if DS ignores my calls, he'll answer his sister 😁

Piggywaspushed · 08/04/2022 17:49

Hello, just signing in. This Nottingham stuff sounds stressful.

Nottingham always very popular round here. I'd say it's the number one RG uni . NTU most popular non RG.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 08/04/2022 17:51

@mummyinbeds true, they will disappear into their new world without a thought for us unless a) they need money b) they don’t know how to do/get something c) they want picking up. 😂

EwwSprouts · 08/04/2022 18:01

Thanks @OrangeCinnamonCroissant & @singingstones

3 pages in already! Notts accommodation has sounded stressful but now they can picture it and plan which has got to be exciting.

crazycrofter · 08/04/2022 18:32

It was a bit of a faff but I’m glad we have some certainty now - as long as dd meets her offer.

She’s been off today. She’s spent the day on Shein buying multiple prom dresses in the hope that two of them fit, and now she’s listing all the artists she wants to see at Reading in order of priority Grin Definitely no work done!

whatsnext2 · 08/04/2022 18:38

Thanks orange, checking in.

Piggywaspushed · 08/04/2022 18:42

DS's poor fellow Cambridge reject (economics) STILL has only heard from York, which was his last choice. Poor lad just wants to jack it all in now.

mummyinbeds · 08/04/2022 18:48

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn DS asked me how to wash towels yesterday. Quite random but at least he's aware they need washing. I think I'll get quite a few ' how do I' calls.

Seeline · 08/04/2022 19:12

The 'how do I' calls are great! Keep you on your toes - cooking, food safety, laundry, DIY, finance, transport...The list is endless.

DD doesn't know anyone else going to UEA. We applied for accommodation today, but they don't do anything until after results day, so another long wait.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 08/04/2022 20:08

@Piggywaspushed that’s awful, the poor kid. What is it with these ridiculously long waits?? I hope he hangs in there and gets where he wants to be.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 08/04/2022 20:09

@seeline why are they waiting until then? Like it’s not going to be a mad time anyway!

Piggywaspushed · 08/04/2022 20:11

He's such a lovely boy too. Not one shred of arrogance.

My entire back catalogue of texts from DS1 are 'how do I' texts. Generally he has an odd texting manner so they usually begin 'why on Earth do my clothes still smell?' or 'how on earth does anyone afford to shop at a supermarket?' or ' what on Earth do I do with a door that has fallen off?' (Real texts...)

crazycrofter · 08/04/2022 20:47

What do you do with a door that’s fallen off @Piggywaspushed?! Has he decided what he’s doing next year yet?

Piggywaspushed · 08/04/2022 20:59

Confess to the landlord! Apparently, it just came off in his hand. To be fair, this also happened with our shower door and anything he touches... he's good if you actually need something breaking.

No decisions yet... maybe an MA. Trying not to nag...

22Newnames · 08/04/2022 21:44

Oh blimey that’s hard, poor bloke.

I’m dreading the lack of contact. DS will def be one who only calls when he needs something. He won’t call his brother either so don’t know how we will keep in contact. He used to adore me but sadly that has gone over time 😕. I know it’s normal and right for him to grow up but it’s still sad.

BlueMarigold · 08/04/2022 22:07

Hi, sorry not been on here much recently. Lots going on and finally back in the office full time.

DD has study leave soon and it dawned on us that we are soon to have an adult child!

HarrietDVane · 08/04/2022 22:57

Thank you for the new thread and updated list. DD doesn't know anyone else going to Warwick. One of her friends has it as insurance (Cambridge firm) but that's it. I think (hope) DD will keep in touch though - she's always made daily contact when staying away with friends or off on school residentials, so I'm keeping fingers crossed.

Decorhate · 09/04/2022 08:42

Dd & ds1 didn’t know anyone going to their unis when they started. Well there was another boy from ds1’s school going to the same uni but they were not friends & I don’t think they ever met up. In some ways that’s better as they are forced to get to know new people?

Whereas if ds2 does get into Leeds, he knows lots of others who have also firmed it.

Nottingham has always been very popular here too. I think one year around half the students at the school I work at had gone to one or other of the Nottingham unis!

PaddingtonPaddington · 09/04/2022 09:00

Catching up on the new thread, thanks @OrangeCinnamonCroissant

End of term here finally. A level music composition finished and handed in hooray. DD had the school Easter concert and I can’t believe that was the final one, she played a solo and I had a tear in my eye. Thought of you piccolo as had that end of an era feeling.

DD met another student at the offer holder day and totally hit it off with them, they exchanged details and they have also accepted a place on the same course. They have been messaging which has made DD a bit less anxious about going.

EasterDecorations · 09/04/2022 09:22

Well, DS might know someone else at RAU, another student at DS's school has apparently applied but not sure if they have accepted. Other than that it's unlikely but it's a tiny uni. Also unlikely to be many on TSR, WIWIKAU etc compared to bigger unis.

Don't know anyone with a Nottingham application though. DS only seems to know about his closer friends, not the whole year group but I have friends with y13 DC met at ante-natal classes, nursery, primary school etc. One Durham, two Bristol, one awaiting an offer but keen on Exeter, one Surrey, one Brighton.

I found someone from one of my A level classes on my course at uni, we had lunch together the first day but hadn't been friends previously. They dropped out fairly early on.

I will get lots of "how do I" calls, I already do in boarding. In fact we had a chat about it yesterday that DS does need to at least try to work things out independently before checking with me rather than defaulting to asking me before trying. This was after discussing him looking for the jobs section on the website of a local company, nothing complicated.

DD OTOH we probably won't hear from as much, we are fairly close but she's much more independent and have-a-go. She certainly won't be letting me have her UCAS login!

ProggyMat · 09/04/2022 10:07

Thanks for the new thread @OrangeCinnamonCroissant
Sending positive vibes and many thanks for yet another belting updated list @singingstones!
Exciting times for the Nottingham offer holders!
DDs college is catered and offers accommodation for the whole of her degree. So that’s 3 clear outs per year x 4 for us if she’s meets her offer !
She made friends at a course she went to last summer and has kept in touch. One is holding an offer at her college and a couple have offers at other colleges.
Study leave starts 13th May.

Fiddlersgreen · 09/04/2022 10:13

Just found that DS was rejected by Leeds. He got the email on Monday but “forgot” to tell me! So that’s them all now, he just needs to make some decisions and press that button
