Thread 29 - Covid Cohort - Whirlwinds and Waiting

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 23/02/2022 22:29

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

I've rarely been as perishing cold and windswept as I was on a February trip to Gunwharf Quays Grin. Always love a day out in Portsmouth though.

DD is in super-organised mode after this morning's missed mock; she's even made an appointment with her English teacher to go over her revision timetable, which is a big step for her! And she made some very nice vegan pancakes just now.

EventuallyDelighted · 01/03/2022 19:22

I love Portsmouth too, even though my uni experience wasn't the best (it was 30 years ago so don't read anything into that for todays students). It is a pity the main city shopping area is so run down now, but still got a great deal to recommend about the city as a whole.

A really good day here, with DD’s last mock and an offer from Birmingham! She’s gone out with her girls for a celebratory burger!

crazycrofter · 01/03/2022 20:04

Well done to your dd @KingscoteStaff! The medicine offers are starting to come in then? Dd has lots of medic friends still waiting for offers so that’s good.

Decorhate · 01/03/2022 20:16

@KingscoteStaff Excellent news! Congratulations to your Dd.

ealingwestmum · 01/03/2022 20:44

Oh, that’s bostin Kingscote. As we’d say in Brum (in the 70’s)!

Nard75 · 01/03/2022 21:38

@KingscoteStaff well done on the offer brilliant news.

Good news! I hope the organised phase lasts! 😊

Thanks, chaps - I am suddenly realising how easy we had it with DS - he was firmed and insured and looking at accommodation by the end of Feb - DD is still waiting to hear back from 2 of hers!

Fruitygal · 01/03/2022 23:40

Fab news will she firm Birmingham?
singingstones · 02/03/2022 07:34

Great news Kingscote, congrats to her!

Wheresthebeach · 02/03/2022 08:03

Fab news Kings.
Trains to Clapham disrupted due to emergency services so we’ve missed our train. At least it’s a similar experience to Southampton with storm chaos. DD feeling that she’s a bit cursed with open days!

icanbewhatiwant · 02/03/2022 08:04

I take it student finance is now open as I've seen people on the Facebook page talking about it. No idea how I get Ds2 to fill the forms in online. He won't do anything I ask. I said on here that I'd offered him my old iPhone as his is 5 or 6 years old and only stays charged a few hours, I said he can have mine when he's tidied his room, almost 2 weeks later the phone is still in the drawer. He won't tidy his room. He likes to do things in his own time. I guess I should be pleased he is independent.

KingscoteStaff · 02/03/2022 08:25

@TangoWhiskyAlphaTango She's still got everything crossed for Newcastle, which would be her top choice, but they are being even slower than Birmingham!

crazycrofter · 02/03/2022 08:56

@icanbewhatiwant so frustrating, I feel your pain a bit with my ds as he totally has to do things his own way, in his own time. He said to me the other day (when I was nagging about revision) 'I'm not your slave you know, please let me have some autonomy!' Grin I don't think he appreciates how much autonomy he gets!

Hope your day goes ok @Wheresthebeach. I was thinking earlier that it might be a good thing if we experience York in the freezing rain on Sat, as at least it would then be a fair comparison with Southampton, which we visited during the last storms!

Heifer · 02/03/2022 09:28

Congrats @KingscoteStaff. Fingers crossed for Newcastle

Re Student Finance - has anyone applied yet? I asked DD if she wanted me to do it for her as she is revising etc and she did. So I completeted everythings, along with both mine & DHs finances etc. But on DDs application it is now saying She has actions to complete, send us your identify evidence, says to click on to enter passport details (which i did when completed the application yesterday). When I click on enter passport details it takes me to a page that is for adding files (digital copies). Has anyone applied yet and does the status say the same - just wondering if I need to wait a day or so for the passport details to be checked or something.

I just saw she is a Medicine applicant. I have a couple of GP colleagues (Profs) who teach at Brum and they are fab. I also have the odd medic student come out with me (nurse practitioner) and they always seem so lovely and polite not to mention young! Its a superb Uni for Medicine she should be very proud. Hope she hears back from Newcastle soon Smile
