Thread 21 Corona Cohort - Nervous waiting, so frustrating

Monkey2001 · 09/10/2021 12:21

Continuation of OrangeCinnamonCocktail's threads

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Very exciting to see all these offers coming through. Especially for Birmingham! Can I ask if the Birmingham offers are exactly what is published on their website or were they lower than expected?

DD has sent her PS draft to her teacher and is awaiting feedback. Once that’s done, we will be able to complete the form and submit it.

Piggywaspushed · 27/10/2021 07:30

DS's was exactly as advertised on website.

Shimy · 27/10/2021 08:20

@20NewNames It’s a shame you said Exeter is too far but how about Swansea? Strong reputation for engineering and climbing up the ranks yearly. Amazing engineering dept. & facilities.
Standard offer - MEng AAB-ABB,
Standard offer - BEng - ABB-BBB

20newnames · 27/10/2021 08:32

@Shimy

Thank you but unfortunately Swansea counts in the No Wales part of his criteria, but is also too far away. To be fair we are in East Anglia so the no Wales, no Scotland has a lot to do with distance.

Shimy · 27/10/2021 08:46

Ah! Sorry I didn’t read far back enough to know Wales & Scotland were out. That’s such a shame as he would have some brilliant choices there. What about Coventry? I think they also have a good reputation for Engineering (good industry links) or Nottingham Trent (good all round newer uni) both around the ABB-BBB mark, of course UEA and Sussex are great options too.

estherfrewen · 27/10/2021 09:25

Birmingham was standard offer as website for DS

Monkey2001 · 27/10/2021 09:28

@20NewNames has he looked at Lincoln? My step nephew has just started engineering there. The grade requirements are quite low, he got an unconditional offer, but he chose it although he had AAA because of the industrial links. Siemens is a major partner and he is linked with a company in the US and I think he will be going there as part of his degree.

@OrangeCinnamonCocktail just pointing out we are on page 36 and racing through - probably need the new thread tomorrow if you get a chance to take ownership back!

@Zebracat DD has applied for Liberal Arts. I think nearly all the courses we looked at offered anthropology modules. It would be possible to pick a significant proportion of those on most courses. At least then if she found she didn't like it, she could concentrate on another area. (I have to say though it does look like a fascinating area!!)

20newnames · 27/10/2021 10:08

@Monkey2001 no he hasn’t looked at Lincoln but will do so. Thanks!

stoneysongs · 27/10/2021 10:30

Would it be helpful or would it be weird to have a list of what everyone's DC want to do? I briefly lurked on the "alternative path to glory" thread (or whatever it's called) and they did that. I can remember lots of people's plans but losing track a bit now.

I know I am slightly obsessed with lists, so just say if it's weird. If people do think it would be helpful I can compile and post something shortly while I'm at the vaccine centre with DD. And people can update missing bits or when things change.

Heifer · 27/10/2021 10:38

@singingstones - I think a list would be useful as I often find myself scolling back (over several threads now) to find what their DD is wanting to study (and where they are interested or applied to).

Shimy · 27/10/2021 11:00

I’ll be up for that @singingstones @Heifer Smile.

Seeline · 27/10/2021 11:52

Excellent idea!

BlueMarigold · 27/10/2021 12:01

Sounds great @singingstones

Delphigirl · 27/10/2021 12:07

Go for it singingstones - maybe start new thread with a list like
Delphigirl - DS, oceanography, Southampton, Cardiff, Plymouth, Dalhousie

Then we can add (offer ABB) or (firm) etc as time goes on?

Seeline · 27/10/2021 12:16

Yey - DD just got her first offer! Standard offer at UEA which is her first choice!!

estherfrewen · 27/10/2021 12:21

Great news @Seeline!

crazycrofter · 27/10/2021 12:22

Congrats to your dd @seeline! I really wanted dd to look at UEA (so I could visit!) but she’s never heard of it/knows no one looking at it so wasn’t keen. It looks lovely!

ealingwestmum · 27/10/2021 12:22

👏👏👏 Seeline!

20newnames · 27/10/2021 12:27

Excellent news @Seeline

Shimy · 27/10/2021 12:30

Yay! @Seeline wonderful news. Congratulations to DD.

Hattifatteners · 27/10/2021 12:35

Fabulous @Seeline! DS is first year student at UEA. I really like the campus and the pastoral support seems very good.
I like the idea of a list. I don't post often, but I do follow everyone's stories.
DD is applying to Bristol, Liverpool, Nottingham and Edinburgh to study Vet Med.

BlueMarigold · 27/10/2021 12:49

Congratulations @Seeline!

Wheresthebeach · 27/10/2021 12:59

That’s lovely news @Seeline
