Thread 21 Corona Cohort - Nervous waiting, so frustrating

Monkey2001 · 09/10/2021 12:21

Continuation of OrangeCinnamonCocktail's threads

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

That's so lovely Also, what an inspiring doctor.
Great news for Paddington Jr, they obviously liked the audition. Good luck with the interview.

crazycrofter · 22/10/2021 20:56

@Fruitygal tell me about it! She didn’t go into second gear until she’d done four hours! But he was the only instructor who had space and he seems confident in his system as he reckons she could do a test in December? He seems to be focusing on manoeuvres, handling etc before gears!

@sofakingcool we live in Birmingham but he takes her to a nearby council estate which is quite quiet with wide roads. I had a reprieve anyway, as she was running late for the party so we definitely couldn’t get there in time at the sort of speed she’s used to!

Piggywaspushed · 22/10/2021 21:12

Guardian reporting it will be announced that 16 and 17 year olds will get a second jab.

Fruitygal · 22/10/2021 21:39

No tests down in our part of the south east until March 2022

icanbewhatiwant · 22/10/2021 21:59

@Piggywaspushed i hope some of ds's younger friends can have a second vaccine. It might encourage him. Ds still won't have his. It's been 8 weeks since first. Ds will be 18 in 3 weeks. Eek...I didn't actually realise his birthday was that close.

mummabear74 · 22/10/2021 23:31
@mummabear74 once you pay and send you can only access it through school. Then once they have submitted it to UCAS you can easily change choices for up to 2 weeks and add more choices if you did not use all 5. Other changes would be through UCAS.

@Oblomov21 19th May is the deadline for universities to decide, and I think lots will happen in April. See www.ucas.com/ucas/events/find/scheme/undergraduate/type/key-date
Thank you @Monkey2001 this was really helpful. All sorted and submitted now to the school.

Just to remind anyone interested there is a Cardiff open day today - its not too late to hit the M4!

EerilyDisembodied · 23/10/2021 08:37

We're off to Reading today so we'll be crossing the M4 rather than hitting it Grin

Alsoplayspiccolo · 23/10/2021 09:28

Delphi, we couldn’t get on to the Cardiff open day when I looked (and we’re in Cardiff!)

Thanks for all the lovely comments about DD and her consultant. It was indeed a really nice way to bring her time under him to a close.

crazy, yes, DD seems to have found her groove, thanks, after the excesses of year 12! In fact, her head of 6th form told us yesterday that DD is the type of student she wishes all her students to be. 🤩
We’re still struggling to agree on how often she should be going out, but she is at least prioritising school over social.

Heifer · 23/10/2021 09:36

This may be of interest. I received an email from Duke of Edinburgh Magzine about Flying Start Degree Programme. Seems to be for Accounting, Technology and Business Management. No good for DD but thought I would share.

Piggywaspushed · 23/10/2021 09:50

So... no Sheffield for us . M1 is closed for 3 junctions. No way we would have got there on time with the massive diversions Sad

ealingwestmum · 23/10/2021 10:26

Oh that’s disappointing for you guys Piggy

Alsoplayspiccolo · 23/10/2021 10:27

Oh, that’s pants, piggy. Are you turning around and going home?

Piggywaspushed · 23/10/2021 10:31

Already have. Talk was the main thing and at 11.30. We just wouldn't have made it without panicking.

cariadambyth · 23/10/2021 10:45

Oh no @Piggywaspushed, what a shame, not to mention the fact you missed a Saturday morning lie in. Will they put the talks online? I know it’s not the same though I know.

cariadambyth · 23/10/2021 11:09

I don’t know why I know twice!! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Delphigirl · 23/10/2021 11:12

What a pain @Piggywaspushed
@Alsoplayspiccolo there is no check in or registration once you get to the open day so I would just turn up if you want to go, particularly if you are in Cardiff anyway

BlueMarigold · 23/10/2021 11:19

@Piggywaspushed that’s so annoying! Sad

Piggywaspushed · 23/10/2021 11:32

Hopefully the talks will be online or there are offer holder days, I guess.

Wheresthebeach · 23/10/2021 11:41

@Piggywaspushed oh what a pain. Hopefully you can rebook.

BlueMarigold · 23/10/2021 11:41

@Piggywaspushed yes we couldn’t visit every uni on the list but hoping to make an offer holder day.

Heifer · 23/10/2021 11:47

that is annoying for you - bad enough to have something cancel let alone actually travelling there. Are you going to do something else instead?

Seems there has been some good positive news (reading your posts) so that's nice.

I hope you enjoy half term - we are into our 2nd week and DD has attended a few 18ths and been bowling plus revision and slept a LOT.

Piggywaspushed · 23/10/2021 12:28

No, just sitting at home sulking and watching videos about the uni...

We didn't get far : turned around about 10 miles from home once we figured out length of diversion!

Monkey2001 · 23/10/2021 12:43

@Piggywaspushed sorry to hear that, I was wondering whether my parking tip had worked for you!

If it helps, in normal times Sheffield is excellent at offer holders days - we were offered a night in student accommodation for something like £10 each and a free meal in the bar in Endcliffe village the night before a full on offer holder day. It was at the end of March 2020 for DS1 so it was cancelled, but would have been great!

crazycrofter · 23/10/2021 14:23

Oh that’s annoying piggy. I think we’ll be mainly relying on offer holders days so I do hope they happen. Dd sets a lot of store by a place’s vibe/how it feels to her. She liked Southampton but now says it’s too long since she visited and she can’t remember it!

I took her driving this morning and it was absolutely terrifying! Admittedly our car isn’t the smoothest/easiest to drive but you’d have thought she’d never driven before! My confidence in her instructor is diminishing!

@alsoplayspiccolo great that she’s prioritising schoolwork! I’m not even sure I could say that about dd let alone ds! I’m going down the bribery route with him, against all my better judgment!
