Thread 21 Corona Cohort - Nervous waiting, so frustrating

Monkey2001 · 09/10/2021 12:21

Continuation of OrangeCinnamonCocktail's threads

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

I think you always need a back up plan even if you have an A x 3 predicted. Exam grades are worked out on the bell curve so the grade is your child’s performance relative to their peers. Add possible covid, long covid and exam nerves - anything can happen. Most friends with kids with predicted of AA A*combos have put in one ABB place as a back up or a similar course with spaces in clearing last year so AAB but was in clearing. Always worth looking on Discover Uni to see what the uni accepted in terms of ucas points in previous years.

stoneysongs · 22/10/2021 13:07

If a uni you’ve applied to doesn’t make a decision by the appropriate deadline, that choice will be automatically made unsuccessful.

Yikes, I didn't know this happened.

PaddingtonPaddington · 22/10/2021 14:01

DD has a zoom interview next week for her favourite music course. Yay! From reading the website it seems this is standard following submitting the recorded audition last week but still exciting. Just to add another level of complexity she’s away all week with her music group so will need to organise herself and do it whilst away. I think I will email the music group leader and see if they can give her a hand to set up/reminder.

ealingwestmum · 22/10/2021 14:09

It’s all very exciting for her though Paddington, that’s good Adrenalin induced juggling, not bad!

Monkey2001 · 22/10/2021 14:15

Exciting Paddington, but difficult for you to be worrying about details whilst she is away. Good luck to her!

Ooh, that's exciting @PaddingtonPaddington. Although I can imagine it will be stressful as you won't be in control of what's going on with her being away!

At least she will have lots going on so less time to worry!

EwwSprouts · 22/10/2021 15:29

Paddington all moving in the right direction. Fingers crossed for her!

Wheresthebeach · 22/10/2021 17:32

Best of luck @PaddingtonPaddington sounds exciting!

Piggywaspushed · 22/10/2021 17:35

That's a good list ealing. Solid.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 22/10/2021 17:47

Exciting, Paddington! Might be just as well you can’t be involved - no responsibility on your part, so you’ll just have to let her get on with it, which is probably better to get her focused.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 22/10/2021 17:52

Scary day for us today - DD was officially signed off from children’s services for her ADHD care, and will be transferred to adult MH services.

According to her outgoing consultant, moving her to wherever she decides to go to university needs to be done as soon as she knows, and then it’s a lottery what sort of service she’ll be under.
I’d also failed to consider that she’ll have to pay for prescriptions once she’s moved to England (we have been so fortunate, living in Wales).

What was lovely about today was that her consultant, who we’ve only been seeing for a year and who is just brilliant, told her he also had ADHD, and that childhood ADHD doesn’t have to mean a difficult or unhappy adulthood.
Her eyes widened at the realisation that he had graduated med school with all the same issues she has.

ealingwestmum · 22/10/2021 17:53

Thanks Piggy. I think so too for her needs.

Piggywaspushed · 22/10/2021 17:53

Oh , what a lovely final paragraph. Best of luck to you and your DD x

ealingwestmum · 22/10/2021 17:56

What astute timing for him to share Piccolo.

Monkey2001 · 22/10/2021 18:08

Piccolo what a nice consultant! I know it wasn't the major issue, but I think English students can get an exemption certificate for prescriptions and dental treatment because it is assessed on their income, not family income.

EwwSprouts · 22/10/2021 18:16

Piccolo what a generous confidence from the consultant. She won't forget that!

Isthisjustnormal · 22/10/2021 18:20

@Alsoplayspiccolo: what a lovely consultant! I do think that seeing successful adults (outside of your family...) who have succeeded in life (in whatever ways you define, from healthy relationships to good careers to excellent pet ownership!) with the same struggles you have is so, so important for our young people, and what a thoughtful time to share that just as she is spreading her wings. @PaddingtonPaddington: good luck to your dd for next week: being away (distracted from worry, but focused on her music) could be ideal for her! Need to sit down with ds this eve and go through his next level shortlist (he's put 2 in, but still needs to refine his other 3) and see where we're at, and what the grade mix is looking like ... and how many more weekend trips I need to plan ;-)

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 22/10/2021 18:28

@Alsoplayspiccolo how thoughtful and helpful!

@PaddingtonPaddington good luck to Dd that came quick!

I was only thinking of you and your editing skiLls this morning...found out Southampton now ask for a recording to be sent before interview on campus, it is literally just to prove Grade 8 competency Might ask her vocal teacher to sort.

crazycrofter · 22/10/2021 18:30

@Alsoplayspiccolo that’s brilliant! She seems to have done better in the last few months? I remember she went a bit crazy when she moved schools?!

Ds seems to have dropped off the radar of the centre where he used to go for his ADHD reviews. His consultant left in Feb and we had a letter saying he’d get a review in September at the beginning of year 11 - but nothing yet. I rang to chase in September too Hmm

crazycrofter · 22/10/2021 18:32

I’m just about to supervise dd driving to her friend’s house- scary! She’s had 8 hours of lessons but hasn’t yet moved above 2nd gear. She assures me she knows how to though …

icanbewhatiwant · 22/10/2021 18:40

@crazycrofter I find sitting beside a learner terrifying. Having sat beside ds1 then Ds2. I'm a nervous passenger anyway, let alone learners. Thankfully I have 5 years until ds3 is 17. I wonder whether dd's are easier than ds's. Males shout so much.

Fruitygal · 22/10/2021 19:12

What an amazing thing to share with her - an excellent doctor !!

Fruitygal · 22/10/2021 19:14

@crazycrofter 8hrs of lessons with a qualified instructor and never driven in third gear or above? Sounds a bit odd ?

Do you live somewhere with particularly low speed limits?! We're surrounded by dual carriageways - DS was hitting 60mph by lesson 3 ShockGrin
