@JustHereWithMyPopcorn , yeah will do. He missed his pre college LFT on Friday as he'd just had his PCR done, so they requested he did a LFT today before starting back tomorrow. He's had Covid before so I'm hoping antibodies have protected him so it's "just" a bug - albeit a pretty nasty one Sad

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 05/09/2021 10:05

To be fair, if he got as little sleep as my DS did it’s no surprise that they are picking up viruses other than Covid too.

stoneysongs · 05/09/2021 10:09

Sorry to hear this, Piggy, every parent's worst nightmare. I hope his friends are ok and getting the help they need.

Fastforwardtospring · 05/09/2021 10:20

@Piggywaspushed what awful news 💐

Fastforwardtospring · 05/09/2021 10:29

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn glad I have company on motivating DS or not for you as the case may be. My DS is a pull it out the bag boy which did him no favours for GCSE, he started working after his mocks, too late re teacher assessment, he got fair grades for his effort I thought and enough to carry on 6th form (state Grammar), A levels need that consistent work though - he does infuriate me, part of me thinks when he decides what he wants to do he’ll put his mind to it, hoping sooner rather than later.

Heifer · 05/09/2021 10:32

So sorry to hear that Piggy. It's so hard for all concerned.

Thank you for those that commented about DDs illness, liked the advice about resting up and paracetomol. I told her she couldn't go out with her friends Friday night which she didn't like but accepted but we did let her play hockey all day yesterday.. (bad parents). DH took her and said he thought it had done her good. Does only leave today to do the work needed but lets see how she gets on. I don't want to put too much pressure onright now as I am sure school will have a word if she hasn't done what was expected. I just want to be there to offer encouragement and listen to the moaning at the moment.

In another week or so that wil be a different story. If the start back at school hasn't motivated her then words will need to be had.

She is off to Park Life festival next weekend so that won't help, but hopefully she will buckle down after that and get back to her normal hard working self. In the meantime sleep as much as possible....

I've just seen DDs timetable and it seems that

Biology = 8 hrs (over 2 weeks)
Pysch = 8 hrs
PE = 9 hrs
Core maths = 3 hrs.

She will be expected to do some enrichments too now they are starting them back up after covid (nothing at all last year).

This was the first year ever when I haven't had to buy anything for her return to school - I think later today she will suddenly say she needs such and such but I've backed off and not suggested anything. She did say she hasnt' bought anything new to wear yet - but I just said good, wear what you had last year :-) I expect I will be asked again for some money soon..

Exactly. I think he's just very run down

Interestingly I follow the Reading community Facebook page and there has been an incredible amount of people who have felt just like DS (along with negative results), someone said something about the water?!

Alsoplayspiccolo · 05/09/2021 11:13

sofakingcool, one of DD’s friends got dysentery from the water at Boardmasters, apparently! Shock

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 05/09/2021 11:33

Dysentery?? 😮😮

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 05/09/2021 11:37

@Fastforwardtospring are we sharing a son? We had exactly the same with the GCSE mocks also at a state grammar. Sadly there were a handful where I felt he had been under graded and we appealed one and won.

Im currently trying to get him to get out in the garden and get some vitamin D and fresh air and he can’t be bothered to come down. I’ve made him open his curtains and windows at least.

EssentiallyDisorganised · 05/09/2021 12:42

Morning all,

So sorry to hear about the boy Piggy - what a horrendous thing to happen.

DS is at work this morning, DH and DD are out so all quiet. DS is off on a residential as soon as he gets back to school. Also, and I haven't mentioned this before as it hasn't seemed real till the last few days, DS is moving into weekly boarding. Gulp! I think it will be a great move and really help him transition to uni but its going to be a big change. So, we have pillows, bags, packing lists all over the place.

I am wondering how this year will differ from last year, when they literally just did their lessons, hoping some of the normal 6th form things like mentoring younger students will start back up.

Bloody hell!!
Fiddlersgreen · 05/09/2021 13:52

@Piggywaspushed that’s awful news, I’m so sorry to hear it. It’s so upsetting to think of one so young feeling that they have no other way out.

I’m saddened to hear all the stories of bad sibling relationships. I have no siblings and always know I’d want more than one child as I didn’t want them to experience life without a sibling as I’d always wished I had one.
My two boys are 2 years 4 months years apart and although they bicker and would tell you they don’t like each other they do mostly get on and have very similar interests.
DH barely speaks to his brother, they don’t not get on with each other but just have nothing in common and only see each other on theirs or their parents birthdays and the odd Christmas, not for 18 months now though

Zebracat · 05/09/2021 14:48

So sorry to hear about this young man @Piggywaspushed.
I’ve got one in the bedroom, curtains closed and windows firmly shut. Fleece pyjamas and hot chocolate. Glorious day here!
But she just came down and asked me to read her Computer Science project. It’s creating a nuclear power plant simulator. Not a subject I know anything about, but it seems absolutely brilliant to me. I am so impressed.Not boasting, it’s just she’s come such a long way in the 3 years she’s lived here, maybe a little bit, boasting.
She doesn’t feel well. Lfts are negative. She hasn’t really been anywhere except college. She is a bit of a delicate flower and usually gets ill at 5he start of term. I must make sure she is taking vitamins.

ealingwestmum · 05/09/2021 15:33

Absolutely right to be proud Zebra. Hats off to you for creating the supportive/loving environment for her to flourish. And flourish she will...

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 05/09/2021 15:46

Great, we now have both boys with positive tests and so birthday plans are kaput. 😡

Fiddlersgreen · 05/09/2021 15:48

Boast away @Zebracat, she sounds incredible and so do you.

Oh that’s really shit @JustHereWithMyPopcorn really sorry to hear that!

Piggywaspushed · 05/09/2021 15:59

Oh , that sucks just. I empathise about ruined plans.

crazycrofter · 05/09/2021 16:07

Sorry about the birthday @JustHereWithMyPopcorn, what a shame.

@Zebracat you should definitely be proud!

Did you see the thread on here saying that 50% of teens have had COVID? It definitely feels like it here..

ZittiEBuoni · 05/09/2021 16:23

Aaah, no JustHereWithMyPopcorn, that's so disappointing. Have you had to cancel much?

I'm on tenterhooks myself for dd1's birthday next month. Big plans for her 18th and if I have to cancel I'll be gutted. She hasn't had Covid yet, has had 1 jab. Same for sister. Lots of cases locally.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 05/09/2021 16:58

Thanks all, he had a party organised with friends which we’ve just cancelled. They don’t refund though so trying to find another date free. We usually do a family get together but that won’t happen either. It’s not a big birthday so there is that, fingers crossed for your DDs 18th @ZittiEBuoni.

His hockey and rowing start from tomorrow so he’ll missed those sessions this week and part of next.

We also have an anniversary meal planned for later this week which may also be cancelled if either of us catch it. 🤞🏻🤞🏻

@Zebracat you should be very proud and enjoying a good boast, why on earth not! ⭐️

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 05/09/2021 17:02

@crazycrofter no I ididnt see that stat but when I was talking to the NHS track and trace person he asked where I thought DS2 had caught it, I told him from his brother who had been to Reading, he gave a sort of laugh and said all his calls this week seem to have been people at Reading or Leeds!

Decorhate · 05/09/2021 17:20

@Piggywaspushed I’ve sent you a DM. Ignore if of no use or interest

We are just back from a trip to take a quick look around Bath & Bristol. Bath campus was almost deserted. Felt more positive about Bristol this time as we seemed to have chosen nicer streets to walk along than when we visited with ds1 a few years back! Both nice cities which will probably be on ds2’s shortlist

Delphigirl · 05/09/2021 17:45

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn oooh nooo! Hope they make a swift recovery but what a pain.
@Zebracat She sounds really fab, boast away, you should be very proud.

Is anyone going to the Southampton open day next weekend? Looking forward to taking DS and having a look at the national oceanography centre.

Decorhate · 05/09/2021 17:55

@Delphigirl I am totally out of the loop when it comes to open days. Ds announced today that Southampton is also on his shortlist. And that he was not with us when we visited with his older brother, which I had forgotten. I will take a look, thanks for the heads up!
