@Piggywaspushed so incredibly sad, a boy at my DS died just after Christmas. An amazing sportsperson, lovely person-it really affected the boys and school. I hope your Ds and friends are being supported, it really is such a horrific thing to happen.

My DS did a LFT after Reading it was negative, because he felt so rough he booked a PCR which came back positive. It is now a week later and he is just beginning to feel a bit better, coughing a lot and really bad ear pain. His worst thing is loss of taste (and smell), it has put him off food. He won't be back to school until later in the week.

Seeline · 05/09/2021 18:03

We're doing Nottingham and Birmingham next weekend (Fri/Sat). DD is allowed two days off this term for open days.

crazycrofter · 05/09/2021 18:05

We’ve already visited Southampton informally. Dd liked it and it’s her first choice but I don’t think she needs to go to the open day too. We did Liverpool (informally) yesterday and she hated it! Well not quite as much as ds who spent the whole time complaining about how disgusting it was! So she’s now bumped Plymouth up to second place!

Alsoplayspiccolo · 05/09/2021 18:15

JustHere, that’s exactly what the r&r person said to DD, only he’d spent that week dealing with Boardmasters cases! 🤦‍♀️

So sorry about ruined birthday celebrations - everything crossed you and DH don’t get it as well Flowers

Oblomov21 · 05/09/2021 18:17

Yep. I'm at Southampton, on my own, (don't ask) on Sunday 12th.

Delphigirl · 05/09/2021 18:27

Glad to help decorhate. I’m going on sat 11th so won’t see you @Oblomov21 trotting around solo!

@crazycrofter is your dc interested in marine too? I’ve booked Plymouth open day on 9 Oct but they have got dates in Nov and Dec too

Keep hoping Cardiff will have an open day but nothing publicised yet.

Horace123 · 05/09/2021 18:36

Wondered if anyone could help with a quick question - DS’s school has tomorrow as the internal deadline for submitting UCAS forms (for those applying for Oxbridge - internal deadline for those not applying to Oxbridge is later this month). I’m unclear what this means - do teachers / careers staff check / comment on them so that DC get a chance to tweak them? Is that usual? Or is the one given in tomorrow the final form? I should probably know this as we’ve had quite detailed talks but I can’t find my notes …

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 05/09/2021 18:38

Thanks also.

We haven’t booked anymore open days but DS has added Birmingham and York to his list after a chat about options.

crazycrofter · 05/09/2021 18:43

@Delphigirl no, dd is aiming for Occupational Therapy. She had originally set her heart on going to an RG uni - ‘just because’ in my view as the RG label is irrelevant for healthcare courses. But it’s what all her friends are doing (for academic courses though). She ruled out Cardiff for funding reasons so that left Southampton and Liverpool as the only others. She’s familiar with Plymouth though and has friends down there. I think she’s now realised it’s better to be somewhere she’s happy.

crazycrofter · 05/09/2021 18:44

She just needs to find 3 more - or apply with 2, see if she gets offers and then add some if not?

SandyBayley · 05/09/2021 18:49

@Horace123 - as we're at the same school I can enlighten. I had a chat with DD about it this afternoon,

It's a light touch check with their tutor to run through everything. Course choice, shortlist of universities, predicted grades, review of PS etc

It's not the final version and more tweaking can be done after tomorrow.

Decorhate · 05/09/2021 19:11

Don’t forget that the school need time to add in their references etc hence why the internal deadline is earlier.

I forgot to say thanks to whoever recommended the Trenchard St car park. The location was perfect, plenty of spaces & cheap for a city car park!

BlueMarigold · 05/09/2021 19:14

My DD is all in a flap. She got an email from her teacher saying she has to hand in her EPQ a good few weeks before she was told. Now she has 15 days to finish it but she thought she had until November.

sofakingcool · 05/09/2021 19:24
@JustHereWithMyPopcorn oooh nooo! Hope they make a swift recovery but what a pain.
@Zebracat She sounds really fab, boast away, you should be very proud.

Is anyone going to the Southampton open day next weekend? Looking forward to taking DS and having a look at the national oceanography centre.
We're going to Southampton, not sure what to expect though? We've done a campus tour but couldn't look inside or talk to anyone? We were shown round by a student who just talked about the best places to eat Grin

Decorhate · 05/09/2021 19:38

@sofakingcool From their website it sounded like these are more like traditional open days, ie you can talk to department staff.

Horace123 · 05/09/2021 19:40

Thanks @SandyBayley, that’s so helpful. He has been working on his PS and think overall he is happy with it but I’ve made a couple of suggestions he wants to talk to his tutor about. He also can’t decide which London uni to apply for (had planned on KCL but now thinks UCL better). He doesn’t actually want to stay in London so quite why he is applying is a bit beyond me.

In case anyone is interested, there are some Exeter open days in October - just managed to book one.

Zebracat · 05/09/2021 21:09

Oh crikey open days. Must sort that out. .she is on the access to Southampton thing, but that was when she wanted pure history, and they don’t seem to do interdisciplinary. She definitely needs to look at Exeter, Birmingham and UCL.

Oh that's interesting , like I say we've had a wander around the outside - I wasn't that keen but DS is - so would be good to be able to have a proper look

EwwSprouts · 05/09/2021 23:04

Zebra that sounds an amazing piece of work!
Sorry to hear even more DC suffering with covid or similar.

We popped to Warwick and Nottingham today for unsupported visits. DS thinks both okay but not great.

For those looking at biology at Warwick it is up the road from the main campus along with medicine. It was a quiet and I guess would be a dark lane, it felt isolated although only 0.3 mile. Unless there's some pedestrian route we didn't spot. Fab tennis centre. Coventry was better than I expected but I had low expectations.

Nottingham will probably make it into the 5 as biology is properly on the main campus, which is very green. Lots of great sports facilities over the road but they're not uni.

Zandathepanda · 05/09/2021 23:40

@Zebracat we all like to hear about people's successes on this thread, and as your DD is adopted, it is even more inspiring to hear about her achievements. Her EPQ sounds amazing.

Hi EwwSprouts - Re Nottingham - The Uni uses the National Hockey Centre over the road which very much impressed DD. She also liked that that Biology was on the main campus (medical centre across the bridge as well as Biology buildings) plus accomodation. Did you get into Nottingham itself? if so what was it like?
Nard75 · 06/09/2021 06:43

Place holder.

BlueMarigold · 06/09/2021 07:45

@Heifer when you went to Nottingham how long do you think it takes to walk from the medical Center to the other end of campus where the self catered halls are?

stoneysongs · 06/09/2021 07:50

Google maps says 26 mins, Blue.
