Place holder

Piggywaspushed · 14/09/2021 08:32

Is it possible that's the medical students? The medical school is Hull-York medical school.

Otherwise, that's barmy. It's at least 75 minutes by bus.

EwwSprouts · 14/09/2021 08:33

It's about 40mins if a shuttle bus. Hull because they have the shared medical school so are using Hull univ accom not private. The new build at York is hoped to be opened in Jan.

EwwSprouts · 14/09/2021 08:34

I read it as clearing freshers, not firmed offer holders.

Piggywaspushed · 14/09/2021 08:36

Oh, just read an article : it seems it's clearing students. Which rather begs the question why they let students in on clearing. Guess courses having places isn't the same as places to house them all.

I worry about DS and accommodation if he gets a Cambridge offer that he then doesn't make and ends up at insurance. The accommodation systems at uni need overhauling. I have heard so so many places now not able to house freshers.

Piggywaspushed · 14/09/2021 08:39

It can't be 40 minutes. In peak traffic , it takes an hour by car!

Piggywaspushed · 14/09/2021 08:40

At least...

icanbewhatiwant · 14/09/2021 08:49

@BlueMarigold sorry to hear the test was positive. I will await ours. It won't arrive there until today. So we may hear tomorrow, but most I know have waited 3 days from posting. Ds3 is better today anyway. That's the main thing.

@20newnames good luck to Ds for his test.

@EssentiallyDisorganised yes...I thought it best to book a flu vaccine too.

Heifer · 14/09/2021 09:00

Sorry to read about more positives - hope they all recover quickly.

Thanks for the comments re Masters v Bsc. Strangly enough Nottingham Uni has same grade request for Masters as Bsc (AAB) and does say if you're unsure which then apply for Masters. I know it will be easier for funding as and DD pointed out it doesn't mean she actually has to do it - she can change back to Bsc or move courses/uni after Bsc if needed (not sure how easy that will be).

I too am now worried about accommodation for DD. The way she can be I would really worry that should she not get accomodation she would say she isn't going etc. She isn't as resilient as she needs to be (hoping she will get there by this time next year). And you can't right off a uni because it's not handled things well as it's so many of them - especially to those in clearing (as if clearing wasn't hard enough to deal with)...

ZittiEBuoni · 14/09/2021 09:04

I would be furious if I applied to York and got Hull! Clearing or not. (No offence to any Hullensians.)

Sorry to hear about the Covid-stricken. I guess that's the one lonely silver lining of dd refusing to go to school (unless dd2 gets it). We have an appointment with the school counsellor today, wish us luck.

Monkey2001 · 14/09/2021 09:45

@BlueMarigold sorry to hear Covid was confirmed, so sad to miss field trip, hope school has suitable contingency plan.

Negative test here, so DS will be back in school today. We are feeling lucky.

@20newnames good luck for tomorrow.

@Piggywaspushed and @heifer if accommodation is a worry, you can use the way they allocate accommodation as a short listing factor, there are many different policies. St Andrews don't allocate any accommodation until offers become unconditional firm. I know neither of you are considering St A, but for context, all firm/insurance offer holders apply for accommodation by 30th June, they split the various types of accommodation into tranches for unconditional, Scottish, RUK based on preferences expressed, then the accom office allocate when the offer is unconditional firm, makes no difference whether Firm or Insurance. Newcastle allocate a random number to every applicant and don't allocate until results day (not sure about unconditional offer holders) so insurance and firm equal. I think Sheffield, Leicester and maybe Nottingham allocate once you have selected them as Unconditional Firm, which makes it trickier for insurance offer holders, I have heard that both firm and insurance offer holders at Liverpool are allocated before results, but could be wrong as it is anecdotal. All I am saying is that there are a lot of different approaches, and if it worries your DC, factor that question in to decision making.

Piggywaspushed · 14/09/2021 13:26

Just had an email from York saying they are nominated for university of the year....

Piggywaspushed · 14/09/2021 13:27

I think most unis only guarantee accommodation in the first year for firm acceptance offer holders monkey. The bunfight for accommodation begins around Feb iirc, but, yes, do intend to look into it!

EwwSprouts · 14/09/2021 13:39

It can't be 40 minutes. In peak traffic , it takes an hour by car!
In peak traffic from the city centre but other times it's free flowing and assume they can use the bus lanes at each end. I drive that way a lot for DS's sport and McArthur Glen.

stoneysongs · 14/09/2021 13:57

Useful point Monkey - DS's choices have very similar grades so finding out how accommodation works for those who have them as insurance could be a deciding factor. Anywhere which puts everyone into the same ballot after results is more attractive as an insurance choice than anywhere which prioritises people who have them as their firm choice. IYKWIM.

I am developing a bit of a thing for Sussex Uni, not having been there. Anyone know anything about Sussex? I think we might try to visit there and Queen Mary in one trip at half term.

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 14/09/2021 14:35

Cardiff and Nottingham were two that had slightly odd admissions policies as I recall.

Cardiff allocated according to application date after acceptance (not great for those who have interviews) the chances of getting your top choices quite low.

Nottingham you apply when you have firmed your offer and allocated on first come first served basis.

Southampton you supposedly have a very good chance of getting one of your top two.

That's the extent of my knowledge at present !

Monkey2001 · 14/09/2021 14:38

@Piggywaspushed it definitely varies. It must just be a coincidence that for the 2 most relevant to me, as long as you apply by guarantee deadline (30th June for St Andrews, 31st July for Newcastle) they will process once your offer is unconditional firm, ie after results day. Newcastle says you don't even have to have chosen your firm or insurance when you apply for accommodation. I have seen bunfights for some other places, where you are under pressure to make an early decision to form so you don't miss out. I think Sheffield might let you choose the room like booking a theatre seat.

icanbewhatiwant · 14/09/2021 14:40

Ds1 is at UEA he had to put top 10 accommodation choices. I saw on here and Facebook that those with unconditional offers were allocated accommodation first. Many wanted the newer en suite accommodation, as did my son. Ds didn't get given his accommodation until after results day. He got his 5th or 6th choice, which didn't go down well. But it was all fine in the end.

Rivermonsters · 14/09/2021 14:58

Hey 👋 is anyone’s DCs not planning on going uni?

icanbewhatiwant · 14/09/2021 15:43

I've just realised I was meant to register the covid test online. Just had an email reminding me. It doesn't say in the leaflet. So I hope that doesn't effect our wait. I can't do it as I didn't keep a copy of the bar code. Ds3 is fine to go to school. He's bored.

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 14/09/2021 15:49

Hi @Rivermonsters yes and some posters have DC who went onto different things in the past. Sorry it's the time of year for focussing on UCAS. We do talk about other things...mainly Covid, also stuff like pets, weightlifting protein shakes and nice places to visit in the UK.

OP posts:
icanbewhatiwant · 14/09/2021 15:52

It says to register at the front of the leaflet 🙈 silly me. I hope it doesn't delay the results.

stoneysongs · 14/09/2021 16:41

icanbe I'm not 100% sure that your situation is the same but I'm afraid that when DS sent off his postal PCR test without registering it first, he never got a result.

icanbewhatiwant · 14/09/2021 16:48

@singingstones I am completely stupid aren't I? I have phoned the number and told the lady the test bar code as I kept that. I hope that will be ok. She said current wait is at least 72 hours. So it looks like Ds will be home all week.

whoamitojudge · 14/09/2021 16:50

DD survived her trip to Wireless on Sunday and so far has had negative lateral flow tests.
She’s at work tonight and back to college tomorrow so will keep doing them daily just to be sure

Monkey2001 · 14/09/2021 17:15

@icanbewhatiwant, if he is bored enough, maybe he will be willing to go to a drive through next time! We booked at 1:30 yesterday afternoon, test at 2:30, results arrived 8:09 this morning, so less than 19 hours from booking to results.
