@Monkey2001

We have been told to get a PCR test for school. I am 99% sure it is just a cold. Luckily he only misses his easier lessons including maths (where his teacher is GF's mum), no on line access to lessons available. Hope he does not have to take more than couple of days off.
I could have written this word for word except my DD isn’t doing maths. We took her to the drive in test centre so hoping the results come soon.

She has been double jabbed due to an underlying health issue and she also had a negative LFT test. However the school wants her PCR tested as she didn’t go in today. Plus a couple of others in her form tested positive over the weekend.

Normally I would worry she is missing school but right now I am just wanting her to be better as she seems so poorly. She hasn’t had a cold for over a year so it’s probably just that.

Fferny1 · 13/09/2021 15:36

We're back from holiday & feel mildly ill. DD2 managed to accidentally use my PCR test first ( didn't read it was for double vaccinated me) so both tests then had to come from her. I feel like I've just done ten rounds with Mohammad Ali & have a bad hangover. DD2 has a runny nose & headache & dd1 just feels tired.

Just catching up

@Zandathepanda Flowers

Ds had a Pcr at the drive through last Sunday at 10am. Results came through in an email at 1am Monday morning so he didn’t have to miss first day of school phew!

DD and I did the Leeds conservatoire open day on Saturday- 8 hour round trip with me driving leaving at 4am. It was all in person, welcome talk in lecture theatre, move to another one for the subject talk, then a tour with a student everywhere except accommodation and a goodie bag for all the students. Some wearing masks and some not. DD liked it so that’s good. Audition is a choice of online or in person.

Off to Cardiff Friday for a tour of RWCMD. Did the online open day last Friday. DD is very keen and think it’s her favourite. Going on the train this time as it’s 5 hours away for a 40 min tour! Audition is online only followed by an interview.

Monkey2001 · 13/09/2021 16:07

Young people have been shut away for so long that resistance to bugs seems to be compromised. Universities always have"Freshers Flu" (apart from last year), it is now back with a vengeance! Urghhhh!!!

Heifer · 13/09/2021 16:16

DD has come home and said she is now thinking about doing a Masters (Biology).

Can someone please explain the plus and minuses issues of Masters v Bsc please.

Thanks

icanbewhatiwant · 13/09/2021 16:21

I don't think ds3 has covid. He might I suppose. He's just got a headache now, had a fever yesterday. It's going to be annoying having to get a covid test each time they are ill. This time last year ds3 had one day off for a cold, he missed year 7 photos. It was the only day off he had all year. I only ever buy year 7 and 11 photos, so thought I'll buy year 8 instead. He missed them today.

Ds3 was annoyed as he said he wanted to do his usual serious face for the school photo, but the photographer made him laugh...he was quite cross about it 🤣

Piggywaspushed · 13/09/2021 16:22

He probably doesn't but fever and headache are very much Delta symptoms in teenagers...

Monkey2001 · 13/09/2021 16:35

@Heifer I think there was a discussion about masters a couple of weeks ago unless it was on WIWIKAU. Loads of my friends' DCs have done a masters after their BSc, but the funding is better if you apply for an integrated masters as there is only one loan. Entrance requirements tend to be a bit higher, and if you change your mind you can usually switch either way. My niece at York upgraded to a masters after she had started.

stoneysongs · 13/09/2021 17:00

I was talking to DS about this and we think the ideal thing is to apply for BSc so you have the lower grade requirements and the chance to experience the course a bit before switching to the masters after a year or two if that's the best way to go.

You might decide a masters is not for you, or that you want to do one on a topic where another uni is stronger, so for that reason you hold off and apply to do your masters separately elsewhere. If you can fund it of course.

icanbewhatiwant · 13/09/2021 17:07

@Piggywaspushed...I guess we will find out soon. He was only at school 3 days and said no one was off. So can't see covid spreading round much yet. Unless one of us has had it instead. We are vaccinated so I guess we could have passed it on. Ds1 is working full time, mostly outside, so I don't think he's brought it in. Ds2 has done 3 negative tests at school and again no one is off school. DH is retired and hasn't been far, neither have I. So if he's positive then no idea where it came from. Ah well...it's just a waiting game now.

EwwSprouts · 13/09/2021 18:08

@Heifer Someone more knowledgeable said if you want to apply for a masters now do so. If you've firmed the offer but marginally miss the grades you will still be taken on to the BSc.

NCTDN · 13/09/2021 21:17

@Seeline interesting- DD prefers the liberal arts course at Warwick to Nottingham!

EssentiallyDisorganised · 13/09/2021 21:24

I have booked DS in for a flu jab with DH and I at Boots this weekend, he's never had one before but I am worried about it rearing its head after being suppressed last winter. DD (15) should hopefully get one at school. Just hoping we don't get cancelled, our GP surgery has had to cancel this weekend's clinic due to shortages.

icanbewhatiwant · 13/09/2021 21:44

@EssentiallyDisorganised I have booked my first ever flu vaccine at boots. I've never had one before. Ds2 didn't want one. Dh has had one for the past 20 years. Ds3 will also get one at school. But I read that the flu vaccine won't work this year as there is no way for them to predict which strain it will be, as they go by the previous years strains. Apparently there were hardly any flu strains last year for them to know. So I hope that's not the case. I originally had one booked for mid sept. But decided to move to it late Oct. in the hope it'll last all winter.

BlueMarigold · 13/09/2021 22:17

My DD definitely has covid. She had lost her sense of taste and smell.

Monkey2001 · 13/09/2021 22:22

Oh no @bluemarigold. Hope she is not feeling too ill. Do you know what the rules are now? Does she have to stay off school for 10 days following start of symptoms?

BlueMarigold · 13/09/2021 22:26

I don’t know. I will speak to the school tomorrow. I have to send her sister to school which feels weird.

BlueMarigold · 13/09/2021 22:31

@Monkey2001 how is your DS?

My DD is not only missing assessment week , she’s missing the Biology field trip where they were going to do the practicals. I am more worried about her though. She went downhill very quickly and now all I can hear is coughing.

How frustrating for her. My DS is feeling much better, definitely feels like a cold. He said orange juice works better at fighting symptoms than cold and flu drugs. I expect all our DCs will get it this year though.

Hope she feels better soon and it might still not be covid. Flowers

EssentiallyDisorganised · 13/09/2021 23:38

@icanbewhatiwant yes, its a worry that they might have predicted the wrong strains this year but we thought we'd do it anyway. DH has had them for years, I only became eligible last year as an over 50 and DS has never had one before.

SandyBayley · 14/09/2021 07:00

Sorry to hear about your DD @BlueMarigold - missing important stuff is a worry but the school will surely have to have some contingency plans?

I'm not 50 yet but my employer offers us all a flu vaccine, I had it last year and I'll have it this year as well. I heard something interesting yesterday - it was suggested that Covid and flu will compete this winter and the virologist suggested covid might outcompete flu so we wouldn't see much flu. I have no idea if that's likely to be true but the way he described it sounded plausible,

BlueMarigold · 14/09/2021 07:12

DD’s PCR test came back positive.

20newnames · 14/09/2021 08:02

Sorry to hear of those with COVID. It does seem to be so prevalent at the moment. DS managed to escape it from Reading despite sharing a room with someone who got it!

DH and I have flu jabs booked for next week but DS wasn’t bothered so is not currently booked in.

DS has his practical driving test tomorrow so did some last minute practice last night! Will no doubt go out again tonight then the instructor will take him tomorrow. She is happy he is at test standard and he is generally very good but as to be expected there is the odd moment where the lack of experience shows. I am quite nervous though as he will be so gutted (and grumpy) if he fails…

EwwSprouts · 14/09/2021 08:17

BlueM sorry to hear of another poorly DC. I'm sure school must have a contingency plan for those missing essential field trips.

I've just read that York Univ is so short of accommodation they are shipping some freshers out to Hull for at least the first term (there is a build in progress at York) and putting on shuttle buses.

Piggywaspushed · 14/09/2021 08:26

Hull??! That's not a short journey...

They were supposed to have a new college built by now.
