....... and I fear there will be a lot of "next time"s for all of us!

icanbewhatiwant · 14/09/2021 17:30

@Monkey2001 the weird thing is I now remember reading about registering online. But when we did the test a few hours later I followed the instructions from the taking the test part on leaflet. Carefully packed up the box also following instructions. Then posted.
He's bored...but doesn't want to go back to school. If I don't hear back he's off until next weds. I shall call them again Thursday if I haven't heard. I've got the barcode from the test.

icanbewhatiwant · 14/09/2021 17:31

@Monkey2001 the drive-in test centre was about 40 mins drive there. He didn't want to spend over an hour in the car as he'd got a headache. I shall make him next time!

Icanbe I feel so sorry for kids who are too old to find school fun and too young to be self motivated. It must be so hard to have lost the routine which made school feel like a normal part of life. The effects on education, in particular widening the gaps between advantaged and disadvantaged kids and between boys and girls are going to reverse decades of progress. And it is all behind run by idiots! 😢

DS's school has suddenly announced today that there will be an EPQ meeting next week. Ermmm, is this not a tad late ???

Monkey2001 · 14/09/2021 17:53

DS is having an EPQ wobble. It won't make any difference for his choices and he is feeling overwhelmed. I tried to tell him he had done a lot of the work, but he is worried about how difficult it is to get a good mark and all the reflection involved. I found an excellent video by a Youtuber who had made his A* EPQ available to download. The EPQ is a brilliant thing for preparing people for real work. I thought this video might help us to break it down to manageable chunks, if you look at the content of his it does not look so daunting.

I'm sure DS's college started EPQ's back in June?
EssentiallyDisorganised · 14/09/2021 18:09

My DS's school are just starting EPQ now too.

Piggywaspushed · 14/09/2021 18:10

But presumably they knew they existed before today essentially....

whatsnext2 · 14/09/2021 18:34

Sorry nothing to add but place holding

icanbewhatiwant · 14/09/2021 18:35

Yes...ours have just started EPQ too. Though they could start it over the summer break. Apparently Ds has done his first draft. He told me he'd finished it a few weeks ago. He meant the first draft.

EssentiallyDisorganised · 14/09/2021 18:45

@Piggywaspushed ah yes, there have been prior rumours of it. There was a teacher talking about it in y11 when they were choosing their options, an info sheet sent home in the summer of y11/12 and a meeting at the end of last term. So no, not entirely unannounced, that is poor.

Piggywaspushed · 14/09/2021 18:52

At my school they don't do essays. They do marketplace presentations. Bit crap and literally everyone gets an A or better!

Hattifatteners · 14/09/2021 18:56

DD's school made them to do the EPQ in Y12 and the deadline was around Easter time. She got her result on the A-level results day in August. I am quite pleased that is was done this way as there are lots of other pressures in Y13.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 14/09/2021 19:05

Rivermonsters, my DD thinks she wants to go to uni, but she’s not sure where or what, and will almost certainly take a gap year as she has ADHD and would benefit from extra time to mature.

This thread is a lovely, supportive place to talk about all the stuff our 17/18 year olds throw at us, not just uni choices 🤩

ZittiEBuoni · 14/09/2021 19:21

RiverMonsters my dd is undecided and definitely not applying this year anyway as her severe anxiety means she rarely makes it into school.

Visit to the counsellor today went way off-piste, as usual. We ended up with her on speakerphone in the car, parked outside the gym block. We're going to try again for face to face next week...

stoneysongs · 14/09/2021 19:42

@icanbewhatiwant
Not as stupid as me - by the time I realised we should have registered it, the bin men had been, so all the packaging had gone and we never found out the result!

icanbewhatiwant · 14/09/2021 19:46

@singingstones yes at least I did keep the barcode from the actual test. I saw the part saying keep a copy of barcode. I didn't realise there was a barcode on the envelope too 🙈

whoamitojudge · 14/09/2021 20:28

@Rivermonsters My DD doesn’t want to go to uni and has just started her 2nd year at college.
What about your DC?

BlueMarigold · 14/09/2021 20:57

My DD is not going to meet the EPQ deadline now.

Rivermonsters · 14/09/2021 21:05

@ZittiEBuoni hope ur DD is ok xx sending virtual hugs

Rivermonsters · 14/09/2021 21:08

@whoamitojudge I’m actually in year 13 myself so no DC of my own (don’t want any)

EwwSprouts · 14/09/2021 21:14

@ZittiEBuoni I hope we are heading for more normal times and your DD's anxiety will ease.

I've worked late and come home to DS having had a call from track & trace. Despite him telling them he had covid

icanbewhatiwant · 14/09/2021 21:31

@EwwSprouts DH's dd and her dh had covid in august. Her dh was flying to Germany about 4 weeks later. He needed a negative test to fly. It was negative. So they don't always stay positive. I have known a few others to test negative a few weeks later too. So hopefully your Ds will be ok.

EwwSprouts · 14/09/2021 21:38

Thanks he has no symptoms and we know who the contact is/circumstance. I'm just peeved as means most of the morning off work to take him. The gov.uk guidance needs updating if there's been a change in policy. Either it's 90 days or it's not.
