@Zandathepanda

I nearly drowned off Anglesey, courtesy of my ex-SAS A Level teacher who thought it would be cool for our class to go sea canoeing in improperly weighted sea canoes that were designed for men’s hips ie. men could get out easily if you flipped. I could tell it was bad as when I regained consciousness, his face was a funny white colour. Anglesey on land was nice though.
😱😱 They are a particular breed aren't they, teachers who are ex military. Maybe not these days but there were some similar at my school.
@crazycrofter we were in Snowdonia last week, it was looking stunning! Hope you and the hound are loving it. Ours seemed to enjoy the views!
Definitely looks like the views were enjoyed! Beautiful !

For those of you with DC interested in doing law - just had an email from Law Society reminding everyone that from today the solicitors qualifying exam (SQE) comes into force (so aspiring solicitors will complete two sets of assessments and two years of qualifying work experience). The SQE will eventually replace the Legal Practice Course requirements). I'm afraid I'm not that up to speed with it and a brief look on the Solicitors Regulation Authority website (and Law Society website) makes it sound unnecessarily complicated.

Only mentioning it to highlight the fact that if any of your DC are considering studying law (or I suppose any professional qualification), make sure they follow whatever guidance is given by schools, universities, professional bodies etc. Don't rely on a friend who happens to be a lawyer - they may actually be quite out of touch in terms of entry requirements etc (although obviously may be quite useful for discussions about what it is like to be a lawyer etc).

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 01/09/2021 16:10

@Horace123 thank you for your post, my DS is hoping to study law, how will this affect him in his application process? Is this something that is to do with a professional qualification post degree?

Horace123 · 01/09/2021 16:23

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn is he thinking of doing a degree at uni after school? If so, then I think this isn't relevant for him now (its more about the professional qualification later). Only mentioned it as I know lots of my colleagues at work blissfully assume nothing has changed re entry to the profession since they qualified 10 years ago. Good luck to your DS!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 01/09/2021 17:44

Thanks Horace, yes just going into Yr 13 now and then on to uni - hopefully! 🤞

Zandathepanda · 01/09/2021 17:44

singing yes agree with the ex-military teachers. We had another that used to throw a board rubber so hard at a particular boy - it would have been horrendous if he wasn’t such a quick ducker!

How many hours per subject has everyone’s DC got in Year 13? Just realised Dd has gone down from an average 4.5 hours in year 12 per subject to 4 hours per subject per week.

stoneysongs · 01/09/2021 17:49

DS's timetable is exactly the same as last year, I think it's 5 hrs per subject plus however many lessons they have to suffer study Welsh Bacc.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 01/09/2021 18:06

DS has 7 40mins lessons for each subject
So just over 4.5hrs each.

ProggyMat · 01/09/2021 18:11

DDs has gone up!
She thought that after having the EPQ out of her hair and no ‘enrichment’ to do she would have more ‘frees’ in Yr13.
No such luck!

Zandathepanda · 01/09/2021 18:17

12 hours does seem a bit low - not that Dd is complaining. Unfortunately they are distributed at the beginnings and ends of the days - that has caused chuntering!

Alsoplayspiccolo · 01/09/2021 18:26

No sign of timetables here yet, although DS said Firefly was down earlier which may mean the timetables were being uploaded.

Thanks for asking after DD, singingstones. She’s feeling ok about going back to school, knowing that the boy is no longer at the school. Hopefully, it will be old news when they all go back, although I suspect there may be some muttering when it becomes clear to everyone that he has actually gone for good, not just for the end of last term.
I’m doing my best to get DD focused on what she needs to achieve this year, in a positive way, so that she doesn’t lose energy worrying about what other people are doing/saying.

icanbewhatiwant · 01/09/2021 19:43

Ds2 is furious at me as all his mates can see their timetable on their parents school account. But when he looks on my account, the timetable section in drop down menu is not there. So he says I'm not signed in properly. Ds3 can see his timetable on his own school page. So not sure why year 13's are only on parents page.

Ds is dropping film studies, so there should be less time at school this year. Year 13 were asked to go in today to do a LFT or those that could get in as no buses. Ds asked me to run him in...erm, no, you have a car and can drive. He didn't go. I hope he's not expecting me to drive him in on Friday.

crazycrofter · 01/09/2021 20:24

Dd has exactly the same timetable as last year so she still has 5x 1 hour lessons per subject.

Seeline · 01/09/2021 20:34

DD has 8 x 35 mins per subject as last year. I think she has less doubles though, so is losing some of the 5 min movement allowances that they get between each lesson. As she dropped her 4th subject she gets 8 additional frees, although these are designated as supervised study periods. She only gets 4 actual frees. She's annoyed because none of her double frees/study periods are in afternoon - last year she could come home early. They are not allowed to go in late in the mornings.

Monkey2001 · 01/09/2021 21:53

No timetable here, but expecting it to look very full as DS is doing Y12 Chemistry so that he can do the A level as Y14 if he does not get an offer this year. Still hasn't finished EPQ so he will be a busy bunny this term!

AndwhenyougetthereFoffsomemore · 01/09/2021 21:54

DS HAS PRINTED OFF HIS EPQ!!! Sorry to shout but my goodness it feels lovely to have him not going on about it any more!! It's been a brilliant learning experience but I am VERY glad it's done! I wasn't allowed a final read through as I tend to have Ideas ;-) @Piggywaspushed: just spammed you with a load of Bath photos: yell if there's anything specific you want I haven't sent as I did take more, although they are all somewhat uninspiring!!

AndwhenyougetthereFoffsomemore · 01/09/2021 21:55

DS is back to school tomorrow: I don't think he's looked at his timetable ...

Monkey2001 · 01/09/2021 22:49

I feel the release Andwhen, more than a tiny bit jealous! Has he done the presentation?

Monkey2001 · 02/09/2021 00:23

Anybody who has not started a DC on driving, this intensive CV course where a parent/friend teaches under the guidance of qualified instructors is recommended by a friend of mine. It is all off road, so no insurance or licence issues. under17driver.co.uk/

BlueMarigold · 02/09/2021 06:54

@Andwhen that’s great news about the EPQ! DD got an extension on hers. Do you know when the results come out?

AndwhenyougetthereFoffsomemore · 02/09/2021 07:04

@Monkey2001: yup, presentation done late last term so that’s it for him. @BlueMarigold: ummm, good question!! No, I don’t think I actually know that: will ask ds!

KingscoteStaff · 02/09/2021 07:15

DD seems to think that her EPQ grade will come out in the summer with the A levels, but surely it will be earlier than that?

BlueMarigold · 02/09/2021 07:36

DD has to go to school for an LFT today. This holiday has flown by!

ProggyMat · 02/09/2021 07:59

@KingscoteStaff I’m thinking earlier than that too. Did your DD submit in May? Mine did and wasn’t given a ‘predicted’ grade as is the ‘norm’ which led me to believe it would go forward as a TAG and grade given along with A level results. Friends at other schools were given their’s on August 12th.
