@EwwSprouts yes Royal Holloway is on the list. Where does your DC like?

Our list is currently Birmingham, Nottingham, Sheffield, Reading, Royal Holloway, Lancaster, Lincoln, Bangor, Aberystwyth and Oxford Brookes. Got a bit of whittling down to do!
Two of my nephews going to two of those unis from September Wink

ExtremelyDisorganised · 31/08/2021 18:14

Our list is Winchester, Chichester, Royal Holloway, Bournemouth, Reading and Royal Agricultural at Cirencester, which is a geographical outlier (we're in the middle of the rest of them).

BlueMarigold · 31/08/2021 19:58

@OrangeCinnamonCocktail which two on the list?

EwwSprouts · 31/08/2021 22:05

@BlueMarigold He's not looked at many so today's long list is Nottingham, Lancaster, Warwick, Sheffield, St Andrews, Durham, York. Didn't take to Newcastle.

BlueMarigold · 31/08/2021 22:30

@EwwSprouts That’s a great list!

BlueMarigold · 31/08/2021 22:34

@OrangeCinnamonCocktail That would be great thank you!

crazycrofter · 01/09/2021 01:09

@Bluemarigold we’re on holiday near Bangor at the moment. Despite the beauty of Snowdonia nearby, neither of ours can imagine why anyone would want to go to uni there (I suggested it as there’s a course there that would suit ds). It seems quite a small town, a bit run down - and very Welsh! Bangor has the majority of students studying In Welsh I believe. But are you Welsh? As that would make a big difference I think. My dh went to Aberystwyth as an English student and found it quite claustrophobic at times. He did live with Welsh speakers in his third year and felt excluded at times. But if you’re Welsh, ignore everything I’ve just said!

I appreciate my kids are city kids too; some young people might be looking for rural/small town.

BlueMarigold · 01/09/2021 07:52

@crazycrofter Oh really I didn’t realise that! We had done an online open day and liked the range of biology modules that were available. Plus the fact the grade requirements are not too high. We hadn’t actually been there yet.

My friend went with her son and reported back that it was beautiful and by the sea and that the uni looked good. She didn’t mention the town. My DD wants a decent sized town near by.

However with all the uncertainty around exams next year, it is very tempting to put a uni that only requires 80 points to get in.

stoneysongs · 01/09/2021 08:47

The vast majority of students at Bangor study entirely in English, so no worries there. It is a small town though. Nice if you like a small community with everything in walking distance and beautiful countryside / beaches on your doorstep, but definitely not if you like city living with lots of options of things to do!

Seeline · 01/09/2021 09:28

Oh great - and so it starts..... DD doesn't go back to school until tomorrow, but they have been running re-sits for those who didn't get the grades/wanting to improve their UCAS grades yesterday and today. Apparently someone tested positive last night having returned from Reading, and having sat exams yesterday with lots of others. Sixth form are going to go down like flies aren't they?!

Piggywaspushed · 01/09/2021 09:32

Oh, what a pain. I note the Government are now running online ad campaigns to encourage festival attendees to do LFTs upon return.

This is nowhere near over, sad to say.

crazycrofter · 01/09/2021 10:10

@BlueMarigold it’s probably a bit of a marmite place, so your dd may love it. I got my statistics wrong - it’s half of all students studying through Welsh medium are at Bangor - so it has more Welsh speaking students than Aber or any other Welsh uni. But I can’t find the actual split between English and Welsh speakers! I think it just changes the feel of the uni (rightly so of course, as Welsh speakers have the right to study in Welsh).

I think it’s one of those places I would definitely visit if you think there’s any chance your dd might end up there.

Sorry to hear about the Reading COVID cases. Dd only went for the day and is fine so far… School doesn’t start till Tuesday for her too.

Zandathepanda · 01/09/2021 10:12

Yep
Just found out a catchment village near us has gone down like flies as there was a wedding and the bride’s son (sixth form) had a cough for two days before but he did 2 negative lateral flows so they decided he was ok to cough. He wasn’t. Taken out the venue (now shut) and family who haven’t been anywhere this year. From what I can gather a few went from the wedding to Leeds.

BlueMarigold · 01/09/2021 10:18

@crazycrofter we will definitely go and visit at some point. Thank you for the information. You have given us something to think about.

Monkey2001 · 01/09/2021 10:38

@crazycrofter we were in Snowdonia last week, it was looking stunning! Hope you and the hound are loving it. Ours seemed to enjoy the views!

But I can’t find the actual split between English and Welsh speakers!

I have looked into this!

At Bangor some content is available bilingually, so you can choose to have it delivered in Welsh or English.

For example of the 12 listed modules for 1st year Environmental Science, 4 of them have a Welsh language option and 8 do not.

87% of students study their entire course in English. 13% take at least 5 of their 120 credits per year in Welsh, but many of those will be doing Welsh language degrees.

As a town, Bangor's population is about 30% Welsh speaking. It's not as Welsh as say Caernarfon, I guess partly because of the university. There are quite a few international students as well as those from other parts of the UK.

stoneysongs · 01/09/2021 11:12

(Also Bangor has less than a quarter of all students studying in Welsh - Trjnity St David's has twice as many.)

I wouldn't let its Welshness put you off, but DC would definitely need to be ok with the small town feel.

Zandathepanda · 01/09/2021 11:16

That’s a stunning photo - great weather too.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 01/09/2021 11:31

I know 2 people who have been to/ are at Bangor Uni.
Both are very outdoorsy and both studied subjects related to marine biology/oceanography. Both love the uni and the area, neither are Welsh speaking (one grew up in Cardiff to English parents, the other is from Cornwall).

icanbewhatiwant · 01/09/2021 11:51

@Monkey2001 great photo! Stunning view. I went to Wales in last year of primary school. I must go again one day.

Zandathepanda · 01/09/2021 12:10

I nearly drowned off Anglesey, courtesy of my ex-SAS A Level teacher who thought it would be cool for our class to go sea canoeing in improperly weighted sea canoes that were designed for men’s hips ie. men could get out easily if you flipped. I could tell it was bad as when I regained consciousness, his face was a funny white colour. Anglesey on land was nice though.

Yes I think it's very good for that sort of thing, plus environmental science / geography and sciences in general. Not sure where I got that from though!
Monkey2001 · 01/09/2021 12:21

Wow Zanda, health and safety was not what it is now!

Seeline · 01/09/2021 12:23

I have been to Snowdonia twice - a week in the L6 for my geography A level field trip, and a week in my first year of my degree for a fieldtrip. We were taken up Snowdon in a blizzard - haven't returned since....
