@AndwhenyougetthereFoffsomemore dd is looking at Durham as one of the options. I like the idea of her being in a smaller place. We're going to visit next month. I really don't understand the college system though!

NCTDN · 08/08/2021 21:47

Piggy hope you are ok after being in hospital.
I'm relatively new on the last thread. Where in the country is everyone from? I'm near Liverpool.

Fferny1 · 08/08/2021 21:52

Thanks for the new thread @Orange.
Gosh @piggy did the hospital help you feel better?

Shimy · 08/08/2021 21:55

@NCTDN Herts.

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 08/08/2021 21:58

South Coast for me...not very sunny here at all. Why is August weather so.rubbish nowadays? Probably global warming. I haven't seen proper snow down here for years.

SandyBayley · 08/08/2021 22:04

I'm here. DD's UCAT went well and we're n the countdown to Croatia on Friday. PCRs all round on Tuesday and GCSE results on Thursday. It's all happening this week 😊

Seeline · 08/08/2021 22:05

@NCTDN South London

@OrangeCinnamonCocktail been wet here for weeks Still trying to clear the washing from our week away over 2 weeks ago! (no tumble dryer) We do have snow quite often here which is a real pain.

ExtremelyDisorganised · 08/08/2021 22:19

South coast for me too, but about 25 miles inland, we do get snow. We have had torrential rain showers every day for weeks now (well it feels like it anyway, apart from the heatwave week), but sunny spells in between.

ProggyMat · 08/08/2021 22:27

@Orangecinnamon21 thanks for the new thread!
DD has just returned from a two week course - it’s been a ‘dry run’ for uni and I’ve coped quite well!
Ddog however hasn’t and has been quite morose but now is back to full form on her return…

icanbewhatiwant · 08/08/2021 22:32

@ExtremelyDisorganised we were on holiday last week near the south coast. Thursday it rained all day, several Facebook friends were at the coast here in Suffolk, they showed photos of blue, sunny skies. Same the previous weekend too. Never mind...love the great British weather.

BlueMarigold · 08/08/2021 23:05

Just saw the new thread. Thanks @Orangecinnamon21

AndwhenyougetthereFoffsomemore · 08/08/2021 23:22

Thanks @OrangeCinnamonCocktail/@NCTDN: we need to plan some trips up to see both, but know there is always great knowledge on here! Green sounds good @Orangecinnamon21: ds is adamant that he wants lots of green: he's not at his best in super urban spaces (We are 25mins from central London)
Oh, and I forgot: ds passed his theory this weekend: so now to book a driving test: I'm not quite sure what he'll drive if he passes as neither of our current options are really suitable: we need to do some car selling/buying!

Piggywaspushed · 09/08/2021 06:26

Feeling a bit better so far, thanks. Fingers crossed. Early days, according to jolly paramedics. My, they have a way about them...

ExtremelyDisorganised · 09/08/2021 06:49

Isn't it always the way @icanbewhatiwant.

Glad you're feeling a bit better this morning @Piggywaspushed, hope you continue to improve.

stoneysongs · 09/08/2021 07:22

@NCTDN
South Wales here.
Glad to hear things are improving a little, Piggy. Hope all is ok with Heifer and any others who are unwell.

Horace123 · 09/08/2021 08:08

Hi everyone, I haven't posted for ages but have just caught up with everyone's news. So sorry to hear of positive cases and self isolations - hope everyone feels better soon.

@ProggyMat I think your DD will be applying for classics? My DS also went to a 2 week residential trip - I wonder if it was the same? His was a Latin one - not sure if your DD would possibly have been doing Greek or classics, not just Latin trip? He loved it and it's confirmed for him that he definitely wants to do Classics and not maths. He did say that almost everyone there is doing languages, classical /ancient history and history which has now made him worried that his subject choice will look odd (he is doing IB but his higher level subjects are Latin, maths, chemistry with his standard level ones being English, economics and biology.

Best of luck to everyone with DC or nieces/nephews/friends waiting for GCSE or A level results this week.

ProggyMat · 09/08/2021 08:30

@Horace123 DDs course was Greek. She loved it too and feels like she’s found her tribe!
She says lots on her course are doing a wide range of subjects alongside Greek and are applying for Classics, so I don’t think your DS has anything to worry out.
Was your DSs course through JACT?

whoamitojudge · 09/08/2021 08:31

I’m from the south-east coast 👋🏼

EwwSprouts · 09/08/2021 08:33

Andwhenyourgetthere We had a flying visit to Durham. Although the north campus was deserted, so not best timing, DS wants to apply there. He's not one for the big cities. Sports facilities looked great and Durham itself is pleasant.

SandyBayley · 09/08/2021 08:38

@Piggywaspushed - hope you're feeling better this morning. Really unlucky to get the dreaded C at this stage. Look after yourself.

Decorhate · 09/08/2021 09:02

@Piggywaspushed Sorry to hear you have had it bad. Wishing you a speedy recovery

Horace123 · 09/08/2021 09:08

@ProggyMat - yes, it was a JCT course. I'm so pleased it went ahead in person and very grateful for all the hard work they did to put it on. It must have been quite tempting to just go ahead online because it was presumably a nightmare with all the changing guidance.

I have to say I've been very disheartened about the universities here - some have moved online indefinitely (I think Manchester was one?). And some are being a bit cagey about their plans which makes me wonder if they are waiting until everyone has accepted their places and paid their fees before announcing online. I have a niece and nephew in Australia who are at uni - their classes moved to online in March 2020 and have never moved back to being live. Which I think is disgraceful. There have been large chunks of the last 18 months where they've had zero cases, zero deaths, been able to go to nightclubs but can't go to class. And I think the depressing thing is that this is because of reluctance of lecturers to return. I think there may be a place for some elements of online/remote learning but strongly believe that we are not yet at a place where this totally makes up for real live learning. If the universities carry on like this presumably kids will wonder why they are paying so much money when they could sign up for Open University instead.

AndwhenyougetthereFoffsomemore · 09/08/2021 09:08

@Piggywaspushed: only just spotted on old thread that you’ve been in hospital :-( Really glad to hear you are feeling better this morning and hope you continue to improve.

crazycrofter · 09/08/2021 09:10

Ds has just headed off to his camp with his friend and friend’s dad. It’s 2.5 hours away. They have to test when they get there and will both be sent home if one of them is positive! 🤞

We’re in Birmingham. Uni visits have stalled as there don’t seem to be any free days now until September! I’m wondering if we could do Liverpool on the way back from Anglesey? It would be a bit of a detour though.

I’m impressed at all these kids doing work/courses etc! Dd admitted yesterday that she does have some to do and maybe she should do it this week… then she booked a coach to Plymouth to visit the friends she made at the festival last week. She says it’s a 5 hour 50 minutes journey so she’ll leave her work til then!

Hope you’re feeling a bit better @Piggywaspushed?

Piggywaspushed · 09/08/2021 10:03

Bit brighter today
Hopefully coming through the other side.
