@crazycrofter I think you could do Liverpool in a day from Birmingham?

whoamitojudge · 09/08/2021 10:30

@Piggywaspushed glad to hear you are feeling better

Monkey2001 · 09/08/2021 10:50

Glad you are over the worst Piggy.

@Horace123 most universities address taking about moving to blended for 2020, so large lectures on line but everything else face to face. I think it may be a permanent thing for lectures at many places. I have friends who are academics at Bristol and the Engineering Depot have been making lectures available on line for years now and it is very popular with students. Many of them prefer to stream lectures and skip/rewind as necessary. BUT that only works of there are sufficient F2F tutorials and seminars. Is your DS considering St Andrew? He could do Classics and Maths there, and they are highly rated for both - you can combine 3 modules from anything except Medicine in the first year and then keep a minor subject as you progress.

Monkey2001 · 09/08/2021 10:50

are talking not address taking!

Fferny1 · 09/08/2021 11:00

We're in a state of suspended animation here. DD2 has her As level results tomorrow. I'm trying not to mention it and she hasn't either🤐.
Plus all this grade inflation hooha isn't helping. And the fact that if she doesn't get any offers in London she may apply for the foundation course. As no one got offers from her school this year even though they are all A/A* candidates. The foundation course is asking for CC. So this is adding on an extra year to an Architecture course that will already take 7-10 years to fully qualify.

Seeline · 09/08/2021 11:17

@Piggywaspushed I too have only just realised that you were in hospital! So pleased you seem to be improving now. It's worrying that it hit you so badly despite jabs and previous infection. Hope for full recovery very quickly Flowers

Shimy · 09/08/2021 11:20

@Fferny1 I thought As levels were a thing of the past, how come some schools are still doing it?

Shimy · 09/08/2021 11:24

I just read this As no one got offers from her school this year even though they are all A/A candidates* how bloody come? Shock is it like Oxbridge where there are additional tests on top of A’level entry requirements? And yes indeed, an extra yr on top of a 7yr course! I should hope they will be getting a guaranteed job as well as a certificate immediately upon graduation.

Fferny1 · 09/08/2021 11:31

@Shimy the school pay to do these still as they reckon it helps to get Oxbridge/Medical offers. It's in the top few UK schools for A levels. But this year loads didn't get medical offers. No one got offers for UCL Architecture etc either.
Architecture is not very well paid and it's a very tough course with a high drop out rate.

stoneysongs · 09/08/2021 11:32

We have DS's AS results tomorrow too, but already know the CAGs as we're in Wales. Just hoping the real grades aren't lower... 😬

Plus DD Y10 has one GCSE result on Thursday but again knows the CAG already.

Fferny1 · 09/08/2021 11:36

@singingstones we've been given no hint at all. We had a report that didn't discuss attainment at all. Just future career prospects 🤷🏼

NCTDN · 09/08/2021 11:37

DD also getting AS results tomorrow. I too have no idea of what they will be.

MirandaWest · 09/08/2021 11:41

Morning and thank you for the new thread :)

icanbewhatiwant · 09/08/2021 11:53

Our school usually do AS levels. But I thought all exams were cancelled and as AS aren't essential ours aren't getting any grades.

I was just reading on the university Facebook page about accommodation fees. Ds1 goes to UEA so I thought I'd see how fees compare to Sussex as Ds2 wants to go there. UEA weekly price is similar at £170 for en-suite per week. But that is 38 weeks of the year. But Sussex says that price per week is based on 52 weeks. Does anyone know if they have to pay for campus accommodation for 52 weeks? That's a lot of wasted money if they do as they are only there for approx. 38 weeks through the year.

Horace123 · 09/08/2021 11:55

@Monkey2001 - yes he looked at St Andrews who are the only uni to do maths and classics. DH was hoping he'd apply for that but DS is set on just classics. When DH makes any mention of maths being better career-wise, DS counters with "But the PM did classics and he's running the country". This is NOT helping.

KingscoteStaff · 09/08/2021 12:02

@AndwhenyougetthereFoffsomemore DS has just finished his (unusual) first year at Durham and had loved it, despite the strange circs. I think the collegiate set up makes making friends easier.

stoneysongs · 09/08/2021 12:04

I feel for you and @NCTDN! I would be antsy, to put it mildly. But I guess we had this when the CAGs were released, same experience, just a bit earlier. Are you in Wales too? I thought the schools had to reveal the CAGs so that people could appeal at that point. But maybe not if you're in England or at an indie.

Decorhate · 09/08/2021 12:11

@Fferny1 It seems to be the way thing are going that it takes longer and longer to get fully qualified in many professions. Ds is doing engineering. You now need a masters to get chartered. So that’s 4 years - plus he is doing a year in industry so that makes 5 years at uni. Then 3 years at least of CPD to get chartered.

Oblomov21 · 09/08/2021 12:22

£170 p/w is not cheap is it?
That's nearly £9k. Ds1 will only get £4K.

Yeah yeah I know. I was the last year to get a grant. And I chose to take no student loan. I had 3 part time jobs. I paid my termly rent as soon as I got my grant. Then at least I knew I wouldn't be homeless.
I honestly can't remember how much my rent was in the mid 90's. But I bet you it was cheap. £50?

These kind of sums, make me really resentful at having to pay for my son.
Sorry. Just having a moan.

Monkey2001 · 09/08/2021 12:32

@Horace123 at St Andrews he can apply for straight Classics, but you choose 3 modules in the first year and one of them could be maths, even for a Classics degree, and at the end of the first year he could, if he wanted to, move to joint honours or just maths.

Hattifatteners · 09/08/2021 12:35

Thank you for a new thread @Orangecinnamon21.
Sorry to hear that some of you have been tested positive. Wishing you speedy recovery.
We are based in London, but currently visiting my home country. Change of scenery has been great! DD is getting her EPQ result tomorrow. From unis we still need to visit Liverpool, but it can wait until she knows if she is offered a place as she is applying anyway.
@icanbewhatiwant our DS is starting at UEA too after a gap year.

Monkey2001 · 09/08/2021 12:37

With accommodation I find out more helpful to think of the annual cost than the weekly cost. Most are between £5.5k and £7k for self catered en suite. DS1 pays £7k for shared bathroom fully catered. DS2 is prepared to share a bathroom to leave more funds for his protein requirements - 7 eggs for breakfast and a lot of meat as well as his supplements and lots of milk!

Shimy · 09/08/2021 12:37

Well that’s just so unfortunate for them all re: Medicine. Architecture on the other hand is supposed to have high unemployment in the sector as well as poor pay, I read about that some years ago though so things may have changed.

stoneysongs · 09/08/2021 13:11

£170 pw is a lot but that is en suite so there will be cheaper options. I was looking at Sussex the other day and it's about £120 for a shared bathroom I think. Plus eg Lewes Court is a 39 week let for undergraduates. DS is not bothered, he's rather save on bathrooms and have extra for beers I think. Plus I told him if he had an en suite he'd have to clean it, that put him off Grin
