I've got a question for those whose children have taken their diving test-
DD has hers next week. If (and it's a very big if!) she passes, what do I do about insurance? I'm in work all day and the test is in the morning. She's currently insured in a car in my name as a named driver but obv learner. She'll have to wait till I'm home to sort it all out before going out in the car on her own won't she?

NCTDN · 24/08/2021 08:06

Not diving. Driving BlushGrin

icanbewhatiwant · 24/08/2021 08:14

@NCTDN you'll probably be best to phone the insurance company. Ds has insurance that covers as a learner and after he's passed. So I phoned the insurance company to ask if he can drive the car home after passing. They said yes but to call and let them know he's passed. I know if dc's just have learner driver insurance they won't be covered once passed.

Ds hasn't gone to work in the end. He says his chest feels tight still. So I said best to not go in, he is moaning at the money he won't earn.

Volterra · 24/08/2021 09:09

Thank you Piggy, I think it’s going to take some time before his medication kicks in properly and is properly balanced, fingers crossed.

Seeline · 24/08/2021 09:11

Sorry for those still feeling poorly and hope you're on the mend soon.

Those DCs who are having second vaccines - are they close to 18, or is it if they are CV. DD is only just 17, and was told definitely only one at the moment. I'm wondering whether I should try and book a second anyway?

We're heading off for a couple of days in Exeter to have a nose round the uni. Anyone got any tips?

Piggywaspushed · 24/08/2021 09:19

It's very hilly is all I know!

Seeline · 24/08/2021 09:24

Oh great, I struggle with my knees!!

Fferny1 · 24/08/2021 10:02

@Seeline my one who had the second jab is 22. I only mentioned it on this thread as I was surprised at her side effects. Even though menstruation & hormonal issues have been commonly touted as a side effect, I always though it was nonsence .
@Volterra I hope the medication helps your son to feel better soon. Have you had much success with other therapies?
We are in a similar situation with ds2 and are seeing a specialist on Thursday. We've exhausted other avenues as they made him feel worse.
Sorry @Piggywaspushed you've missed Bath.
Poor Ds1 had his two teeth taken out yesterday for his orthodontic treatment & promptly went to sleep for 6 hours afterwards. Then woke up starving & unable to eat much.

ExtremelyDisorganised · 24/08/2021 11:15

Mine has had both vaccines (in April and July) because he was in Group 6 for a pre-existing condition, learning difficulties. He was 17 in Feb. I know other 17 year olds that have had two because they work in care homes.

Zandathepanda · 24/08/2021 12:21

Dd had hers both at 16. No side effects of the covid vaccine except slight headache and sore arm. Which is ironic as it was a virus and it’s after effects (some of which are like covid) that made her clinically vulnerable in the first place.

20newnames · 24/08/2021 14:28

DS isn’t 18 until Feb but we have a second vaccine appointment for mid September. He did have his first in late July before 16 and 17 year olds were originally allowed though as our local centre had spares and put out a fb message saying to come in the next hour.

Re driving test, DS has his next month. His insurance will not cover him driving after he passes. We will have to get separate insurance.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 24/08/2021 15:00

We were told that there may not be a second jab for U18s by the doctor doing the jab. She said we had to wait and watch the news!

nearlyhomealone · 24/08/2021 15:24

DS is 18 in February. He had his first jab last week and was told it's just the one, however I was able to book a second appointment on the NHS site, we'll see what happens but at least it's a placeholder.

Piggywaspushed · 24/08/2021 15:28

Bath have given me my money back so that's nice.

Annoyingly, they have two in person events in September and I can't go to either of them.

NCTDN · 24/08/2021 17:24

You had to pay for Bath?!!

I've looked at insurance. She'll need to wait until I'm home from work but to transfer from learner to full licence is £81 so not as bad as I thought

Piggywaspushed · 24/08/2021 17:30

Fir the overnight stay, yes. Not the rest!

NCTDN · 24/08/2021 17:39

Ah piggy that makes sense. Phew!

icanbewhatiwant · 24/08/2021 17:44

Ds1 who had second vaccine is 20. Ds2 will be 18 in exactly 12 weeks from the first. So I think I'll wait until nearer the 12 weeks before getting his second one. Mine and DH's were both almost 12 weeks exactly. We were called via GP so no option to book earlier. After ds saying his chest was tight afterwards, I think I'll wait a bit. He still says it's tight, but he's been for a walk with me to the post office, he's eating as normal and is now upstairs shouting at his mates on his Xbox. So I'm sure he's fine.

whatsnext2 · 24/08/2021 19:48

@NCTDN I phoned and got quote from Admiral then booked it when she passed.

Driving instructor drove her home as not recommended to drive home after immediately after test anyway.

Adrian flux wouldn’t even quote until after she passed.

Good luck 🤞

EwwSprouts · 24/08/2021 21:27

Back from hols. Very taken with Chichester & area but didn't go to see the university. It took longer to get there than St Andrews despite being closer. Confirmed DS's bias against busy southern conurbations.
Thanks to whoever recommended Arundel Castle & cake!

Sorry to hear some are laid low. Somehow in the summer it seems worse.

DS finally turned 17!!

KingscoteStaff · 24/08/2021 22:22

Starting to plan DD’s 18th party, avoiding all the pre-test dates… amongst her friends there seems to be someone doing every single one.

She also needs to unpick the fact that she’s sent a ‘save the date’ message to the wrong ‘Ben’ in her contacts…

Volterra · 25/08/2021 08:03

Seeline I don’t know very much about Exeter and not been up to the university for many years but when we go and want to wander around the city centre we park in John Lewis Car park which is really central, someone suggested Howell Street which we haven’t tried.

There’s a nice little cafe on Castle Street m.facebook.com/CaffeEspressoExeterDevon/

It’s right by Rougemont Castle and if it’s open there’s a gate that takes you through to Northernhay Gardens and then down by the central station and left takes you back to main shopping area. Lots of restaurants by the Cathedral and I remember the Quay being nice though not been for years.

Oblomov21 · 25/08/2021 08:47

NCT our driving insurance was good. Dh phoned to tell them that Ds1 was taking his test the next week and they have a 'Passover' policy which means it's fine for them to drive, having changed from leaner to passed, for say a couple of days, Whilst parents arrange all the transfers and changes over. I thought this was a very sensible way of doing it.

NCTDN · 25/08/2021 09:01

That's good oblov I'll give them a ring.

icanbewhatiwant · 25/08/2021 10:31

I tried to get Ds to drive himself to work this morn. He still wants me sitting beside him. I even tried suggesting after he'd driven to work with me that he park up, as he's worried about getting parked in the tightly packed car park, then I'd get DH to pick me up and Ds could drive home. But he wasn't having any of it. I wouldn't mind...but work is 19 miles away. So a 76 miles round trip! He's always been the most confident of my 3 boys too.
