It depends on what you mean by 'nightlife' for York. If 365 pubs (slight urban myth..) isn't enough then I'm staggered....

There were about three nightclubs there when I went. I think there is now a bigger one but I was never much of a clubber. Great pub scene and loads of cafes and restaurants.

Piggywaspushed · 17/08/2021 10:16

@Heifer

Great to hear you're up for a visit to Cambridge *@Piggywaspushed*. Accidently spill something on DHs voucher to make life easier ;-)
Grin

We are going to Fitzbillies for afternoon tea at least!

Heifer · 17/08/2021 10:21

oh I agree with you Piggy, I think the nightlife would be great there - loads of pubs, but for some reason DD thinks there aren't enough clubs, - and has been influenced by social media reviews... I said she hasn't ruled it out at least...

Excellent :-) - off to google as no idea what is it ;-)

There’s lots of cafe culture in Newcastle, Jesmond is similar to York I expect but it’s another level (of hedonism) in the city centre. Great theatres and band stadiums there too and Dd loves a metro trip to the seaside as we associated seaside with holidays too. Can you tell I love it up there Grin?

Piggywaspushed · 17/08/2021 10:47

and has been influenced by social media reviews

ah, the demon social media. This is dominated by certain types, I find.

I always get annoyed at school when kids go on about 'no SU' at some unis and choose NTU because of its clubbing. I liked NTU when we visited but going there because of the clubs feels a bit like some kids think it's an 18-30 holiday. But then I'm old...

York is supposed to be the 'safest student city' (don't think this was a survey of all unis as I can't imagine it all kicks off in Bangor or St Andrews...). Not sure that will sell it to your DD though!

Zandathepanda · 17/08/2021 10:48

I recommend the Cats Pyjamas if is still in York, it does a lovely curry.

icanbewhatiwant · 17/08/2021 10:49

My friends daughter is off to York next month to study psychology. They don't go to view universities though. So they have never been. Her oldest is same age as ds1 he's at exeter going into year 3. He also didn't look first. I think I'd like to see places first.

Piggywaspushed · 17/08/2021 10:49

I like Jesmond : biased as I was born there!

How do students afford all this clubbing??

I think York may not be as college-y as when I went. Every college had an extensive bar and a 'bop night' and a restaurant and a library. I think the colleges are really pretty much halls now. I think Lancaster is more properly collegiate than York these days

MirandaWest · 17/08/2021 10:55

I live less than 2 miles from York university and also went there as a student. Don’t really know about nightlife as I didn’t do much clubbing in my student youth and do even less now (ie none Grin).
DS and I were in York yesterday for his optician appointment and thinking how busy it was Grin but I suppose it has been very quiet for ages.

Hen and stag dos are building up again making it not so nice at weekends IMO but that is as a 45 year old Grin

There is a sports centre with swimming pool near to the Heslington East campus and a sports centre with athletics track etc on the original campus.

MirandaWest · 17/08/2021 10:57

DS has been working hard…..at recording music he’s composed. Given that he’s not studying music (due to school not offering it) this isn’t really going to help with what he does next year although who can tell. He visited Bristol a couple of weeks ago with grandparents and seemed to think it was “all right”. Suspect I will need to nag him at some point…

20newnames · 17/08/2021 11:03

We are going to York this afternoon! Doing the self guided tour. I think York will suit DS brilliantly but we have looked into the course modules a bit more now and not so sure about that which is a real shame.

Piggywaspushed · 17/08/2021 11:05

Modules can change quite a lot though?

Zandathepanda · 17/08/2021 11:15

The thing I like with a Student Union building though is that it becomes a central meeting point and a common factor for all students on different courses. A good one pulls everything together like welfare, society hubs, shops, entertainment space, admin etc. as well as a cheap bar (50p a pint in my day). York and Cambridge had the college system which felt like the university was a sum of its parts if that makes sense? Oh dear it’s too early still to get philosophical.
And I spent a year in Scotland doing an MSc and don’t even know if the Uni had a Students Union building so it obviously didn’t matter at that point Smile.

Zandathepanda · 17/08/2021 11:29

Piggy ‘‘twas in the Dene last week and Dd and I herded some tourists off the bridge by the waterfall. A poor bride and groom were trying to get a photo in the drizzle and the photographer had asked very politely if the gaggle could move out the way for a moment. They didn’t. I did a pose bit like the Angel of the North and herded them off. Bride caught up with us later and called us superheros. It was actually just a really bad PMT day. Dd1 is learning from me to be more assertive. Dd2 is so assertive she is going to be terrifying in peri-menopausal years.

Going back to modules, English at Cambridge looked so ‘male, pale and stale’ it put Dd1 off. They didn’t do the course she wanted anyway but English was the nearest. I think even the Guardian did a piece about it so maybe it’s changed? English courses looked particularly different to each other.

Piggywaspushed · 17/08/2021 12:03

English and history courses seem to vary hugely from uni to uni. A loot of English courses have picked up on enthusiasm for creative writing and added those modules, for example.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 17/08/2021 12:17

DS won't look at York even though we have family there and GPs are a short drive away. He has it in his head that it's boring too. Hmm

Piggywaspushed · 17/08/2021 12:21

We live somewhere vvvvvv boring : York seems like bright lights big city to us!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 17/08/2021 12:27

I love York, he's just being a teenager - everything's boring!

Zandathepanda · 17/08/2021 13:20

We’re an hour away to our nearest city on the bus. V boring place for teenagers.

Monkey2001 · 17/08/2021 13:57

Bit behind the chat here, but was dog walking with a friend whose DD studied languages at Nottingham. She and her BF (medic) loved it so much that they stayed and are now buying a house there. I always think it is a great view of approval when they stay in a place after graduating.

My niece at York is very much a cafe girl, although I think she does a bit of clubbing. Cheer leading became her thing there!

Seeline · 17/08/2021 15:25

I did a fair bit of clubbing in my student days. Down the union for cheap drinks until 11pm then to whichever club offered free student entry depending on the day of the week. No need to buy more drinks having filled up at the union 😁

Just got back from getting DD jabbed. Found a one-off walk-in from the site someone posted up thread about 40 mins away. Not exactly walk-in - queued for over 2 hours!! Still it's done now.

Piggywaspushed · 17/08/2021 15:32

If they really want more 16-17 year olds done before term they really need to get more centres open!

DS2 can't get done yet anyway but I'd be happier if I thought other local kids were able to.

Decorhate · 17/08/2021 16:03

Nottingham is very popular around here (both unis). Though ds1 took an instant dislike when we went to the open day! Too big & spread out for him I think.

Does anyone else gave a child going to Reading or Leeds festivals next week?

I am imaging they will be super spreader events... wish ds2 could get vaccinated beforehand but they don’t seem to be doing them in our area yet...

Monkey2001 · 17/08/2021 16:08

Our festivals were cancelled, but a friend's DD went to Latitude and the girl she shared a tent with tested positive. Of course most people who get it just feel poorly for a while, so I guess you have to just accept there is a fairly high risk and decide whether it is worth it.
