Hi 👋
I thought it might be nice to have a support thread for us parents? (Can't see one in further Ed yet??)
It's been such a difficult time for our kids - and for us! - but the end is in sight!
Ds will get an e mail at 8.30am (apparently) and can go into college in person if he needs help/advice.
Good luck everyone!
X

Dds school has said that contesting the grade will highlight admin errors only - ie the actual grade given isn't up for discussion unless it's an admin mistake

NotSorry · 10/08/2021 20:17

I really don’t know @AnimalCrossingNewHorizons

So sorry for your sister

I hope it gets sorted for her

MadameMinimes · 10/08/2021 20:19

@AnimalCrossingNewHorizons They can’t refuse to consider appeals based on what grades students got. You should question that.
There are two stages of appeal… at the first stage the school carry out a clerical check. If the clerical check results in the school saying that they don’t believe that they made an error then the candidate has the choice to pursue a stage 2 appeal. At stage 2 the appeal is carried out by the exam board, who review the evidence. They can change the grade if they feel that either the school did not follow its own policy in awarding the grade or that it does not represent a reasonable exercise of professional judgement. This isn’t a re-mark, so a grade won’t change just because the reviewer might have given the student a different grade. They have to decide that the grade given was not a reasonable interpretation of the evidence, which is a high bar. At both stages grades can go down as well as up. I think it’s unlikely that many grades will change on appeal but schools should not be refusing to carry them out.

Crikey, didn’t realise how many people have clearly had a very emotional day.

I read the thread title and had also read a lot of news articles today about how this year the rates of high grades have risen exponentially. There are more As and A*s then ever before, and by an exceedingly long way. Therefore I don’t consider the suggestion that it was easier to get an A then ever before a particularly offensive one - rather, it is factual. Hence my comment.

That said I’m sorry to the many who have clearly been offended by the phraseology.

I think exams results days are always and have always been emotional days Hmm

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 10/08/2021 20:32

What bryony said

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 10/08/2021 20:34

I haven’t had an emotional day…

Obviously education failed massively with you if you are struggling to understand the meaning of ‘support’

Viciouslybashed · 10/08/2021 20:35

As if you didn't know you were being a dick.

NotSorry · 10/08/2021 20:35

The clue was in the title @EmbarrassingMama

“Support thread”

In 15 years time perhaps you’ll be able to reflect on why PPs are pissed off with your comments

stoneysongs · 10/08/2021 20:38

Crikey, didn't realise how many people have clearly had a very emotional day.

Crikey, I knew perfectly well that my comment was dickish at best and very likely to upset people who have spent the last 18 months trying to support their DC through the toughest time of their lives, not to mention those who have spent the day consoling devastated DC who missed their offer conditions. And I didn't give a shit and said it anyway.

There you go.
"Embarrassing" is right.

That was an apology?

‘Sorry you were offended’ isnt an apology

LilyMumsnet · 10/08/2021 20:50

Hi all

Can we draw a line under this now, and have a bit of peace and love please?

I haven’t said anyone doesn’t deserve anything?! If anything, I think it goes to show that our exam culture is probably bollocks and our children are clearly given the opportunity to do their absolute best when observed over a period of time; not when given 3 hours to demonstrate their intelligence in a school hall on a particular day.

I’m delighted for all the kids who have done well and, for those who didn’t get the grades they were hoping for, hope that clearing gets them something equally as enjoyable if not their first choice.

My last apology was a genuine one - I really didn’t intend to upset anyone with my clumsy wording.

Yeah right

OK apology accepted

Off you go

Artdecolover · 10/08/2021 20:58

Well.

This has escalated 😳

My ds has done 56 assessments under exam conditions since October, instead of 6 exams in May/June.

That is not ^ a typo. 56 assessments under exam conditions.

All of this ^ during the worst disruption to education since WW2.

So I consider his grades very well deserved fwiw.

I'm having a peach bellini 🍸 cheers all!! X

dollybird · 10/08/2021 21:00

@Viciouslybashed

It's like people cannot stand some people to have good news. It also makes me worry for the poor kids who have not got what they hoped for. It must make them feel awful if they are being fed the line that all grades have been inflated.
This ^

@LIZS she’s arty so going to study costume design at Edinburgh school of art. Not sure if you know what their communication is like.

Artdecolover · 10/08/2021 21:06

Oh! Not counting the 2 lots of coursework either!

It's been a long day 😴

I hope you've all found this support thread helpful and good luck to all in their future path x

LIZS · 10/08/2021 21:11

@user1471428785 unfortunately dd knows noone in School of Art, even though she did one music course last year, so can't comment. Which halls is she hoping for?

Dobbyisahouseelf · 10/08/2021 21:21

I'm not sure of the exact number of assessments under exam conditions my DD has had but there has been a lot since September, so I fully agree with @Artdecolover

I would happily join you in having a peach bellini but sadly I'm on taxi duty for my celebrating teenager!

Thanks to all the lovely comments on this thread.
